DEDICA TION In any career field, there are those individuals who, through their attitude and dedication, elevate their job into a true profession. As a token of our admiration and respect, we all extend our sincere appreciation and best wishes to two won- derful people who have guided us as a teacher and as a friend, and given consistently and unselfishly of themselves in spirit and actions... The Senior Class of 1973 is proud to dedicate the 1973 edition of the Microphone to Mr. Edwin Collins and Mr. Robert Winn. 2 MICROPHONE STAFF Mrs. Bemis. Advisor Editor, Sr. Asst. Ed. , Jr. Asst. SNITZERS The pride and joy of the class of '73 is a group of amazing athletes, who go by the name of Recklenhausen Onomatopoeia Snitzers. This group plays intra- mural sports at the High School, mainly volleyball, soccer, flag football, bas- ketball, double dodge ball, and softball. Last year an award was given to the most outstanding intramural team and the R.O. Snitzers was the unanimous choice. The team, formed in the fall of 1970, quickly swept flag football, basket- ball, double dodge ball, and softball. The only challenge came from the Sen- iors but the R.O. Snitzers rose to the occasion and came through. During the season 1971-72 the R. O. Snitzers met a defeat they were to ex- perience twice in their three years together as a team. During the finals in volleyball, four out of six starters were missing enabling the seniors to win the competition. One of the most devastating group of athletes Hermon High has seen in years, the R. O. Snitzers have lost only two games out of approximately fifty games. The members of this outstanding team are: Ray Leavitt, Doug Stubbs, Ron Colby, Gary Erskine, Steve Hodsdon, Charlie Lovett, Wayne Sewell, Terry Shortt, Tom Harris, Art Terrill, Jay Turner, and Danny Fish. 53 UNITED WE STAND, ROW 1: R. The varsity basketball team had a disappointing year this year. They looked really great at the first of the year as they swept the alumni out of the gym. They then got into foul trouble against Ellsworth and lost by 12. Hermon then showed some flash and upset John Bapst by 5. The varsity then came up against perhaps the best team in the state, Camden- Rockport, and got clobbered by 50 points. They then had two he art breakers, getting beaten by 2 against Medomak and 5 against Belfast. Then Hermon easily beat two weak teams, Madison and Mt. View by good margins. They had two other heartbreakers against Bucksport and Hamden sandwiched around a bruising loss to John Bapst. They rose up to defeat Ellsworth and Belfast but they couldn’t compete with the talented teams of Medomak and Camden. Hamden beat the varsity by two points. The coach used next year's players in the remaining game, beating Mt. View and Bucksport. In the last game Hermon held off a late surge to win by three in a game that was warred by technical fouls and a little ill will. With a couple of breaks here and there Hermon could have ended with a record of 14-4, but it wasn't to be, so we now look upward toward next year. Sports Editor, Brian Pickard J.V. The seasons two high scorers were Dottie Pelletier with 116 points and Cheryl Dunivan with 115 points. Defensively the team showed a great deal of improvement, although the shooting percentage was lower than hoped for. Ropes of moss, casting shadowy images on the walls, were dangling from the high ceiling to reach down to the chilling pool of water surrounded by mushrooms growing in the semi-darkness. Bats fluttered through the shafts of light from openings in the ceiling, revealing no sign of man anywhere. Icy fingers of air grasped my skin as the smell of damp stone and the feeling of being alone penetrated my senses. Dozens of tiny passages, like mouseholes, lead from the main chamber, expelling the -sound of rats' feet moving rapidly across broken glass. Among these eerie elements, I was afraid, alone, curious, and trapped. There was no escape, for such fear came from the nightmarish world of my imagina- tion running through the dark- ness of my mind. Mary Thomas 73 Come Come, be my friend. Stand by my side and we'll watch the sunset. We'll enjoy the thoughts and moods of each other. Making memories we'll never regret. Come, watch the children with me. See their innocence. We'll take in the wondrous sight with joy. Grabbing something we can hold forever. Come, travel the empty road as I do. Help me sing an old ballad of life. We'll take all in stride. Running free. Never tying ourselves down. Not even to each other. And in time we may even travel on separate roads. But for now, my friend. Come. Cindy Gray 74 66 Motions setting you free Over the ruggedest trail Through the swiftest stream Onward to a distant goal Reaching it with ease Catch a glimpse of open road You'll never want to stop Conquer many a winding road Let your spirit free Excitement in every mile. Tom Demmons 74 Remembering As time goes by, I still remember, What we had Before you left. We said we'd try To make a go Of what we had, But then you left. So here I sit, Alone again, I know not what To say or do. But still I recall The times we had, The times we laughed, And the fun we knew. I remember these, And many others, I try to put them Out of mind. But still they linger, Forever near, And I ask questions, The answers, I can't find. As time goes by, I still remember, What we had, But now you're gone. Mary Wiles 75 M UCH, A ND COST LITTLE. The End As time runs out, We all look back On things we've done Through many years. We wonder where time Is going so fast We think very sadly And watch through tears. We think of what We didn't do And wonder why It wasn't done. We cry for things We didn't contribute, For all we took We replaced none. We look at the children And wonder madly, What they'll do and Where they'll start. And though we didn't Leave them much, Our time has come, And we must part. The minutes fly, As we cry for forgiveness, For one more chance To make a mends. But time has gone, No chance is given, We cry in vain, Our lives now end. Mary Wiles 75 Frogs walk on them. Love and care we show them. On the hill is where there are a lot of them. Water is what they drink! Elaine picks them all the time. Rover eats them. Sunshine makes them grow. The Old Country Store Never again will you see an old country store With cracker and pickle barrels, Huge candy jars. Man playing checkers around a pot bellied stove, Swapping stories. A crank telephone on the wall. Measure your own sugar and flour from a barrel, Molasses too. The storekeeper was the friendliest person in town. He delivered groceries if you couldn't come to get them. He always knew the best medicine to take, He told you which cloth looked the best on you for a dress. He even gave children an extra piece of candy and didn't charge for it. The big jaw breakers and gumdrops in rainbow colors, Peppermint sticks and chocolate drops and taffy, Ten for a penny. Fresh milk, butter, and eggs in the old ice box. The fruits and vegetables were fresh, not canned or frozen. On Saturday the women gathered to talk, Arranged a quilting bee, Exchanged recipes and gossip, Mostly gossip. No, never again will an old country store be part of a childhood memory. Supermarkets and foodliners are now the thing. Everything is done for you. More's the pity. Our souls drifted freely from class to class, from day to day, and we lived a life of our own, occasionally pausing to stare blankly around us. Then one day our eyes opened wide and we saw. We saw all the activities surrounding us and participated in them freely, adding and blending our spirits and thoughts. As the days marched by, our class organized and became as one. Together we faced the rest of the school, reached out with our hearts and our hands, and shared evenly the moments of joy, sorrow, love, fear, happiness and tears. When an opposition faced us, we rose above it to come out the victors. We conquered the hardest of sub- jects, and our growing up years. The times when life got us down. Even in sports we were superior in our boundless spirit, even though we didn't always win our games. A time will always come when we will reach a peak of learning, when we can no longer cling to our old way of life, and we must step out into the world to go our separate ways. Our time is running out here at Hermon High. Soon our last day will rise over the horizon and we will all be tearful as we look around us and at each other, remembering everything we have done together; knowing that, as the sun sets we will no long- er be a part of our school, and that many of us will never see each other again. Yes, it will be a very sad time for us; yet, a happy joyous time too. For the world lies before us; it's inviting and challenging us to come out and take our rightful places. Our time has come. We are ready to meet the challenge. Farewell, and may our best wishes remain with our underclassmates and administration. Memories of you will be with us always.
