The purpose of the Student Council is to present a foundation for the better understanding between the students and the administration, and to provide services the school finds necessary. The officers for the Student Council for the 1970-1971 year are G. Lovett, pres.; D. McAvey, v. pres. ; K. Miller, sec.; E. Buckingham, treas. This year the Student Council worked for a smok- ing area at Hermon High School. The annual Sadie Hawkins week brought about hilarious fun as most students relaxed while their slaves worked for them. Another annual event, the Winter Carnival, is something that will be remembered for years to come. 36 Dirgo Boys’ Girls’ State ROW 1 —C. Clukey, delegate; B. McCarty, delegate; P. Haskell, C. DAR Good Citizen The National Society of the Daughters of the Ameri- can Revolution is an organization of women, who can trace their ancestry to those who helped gain American Independence. Their main goals are to preserve historical sites and educate for greater patriotism. Each year a girl from the senior class is chosen by the seniors in conjunction with the faculty on the basis of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism. As this year's D.A.R. Good Citizen, Brenda McCarty is entitled to a lifetime membership in the organization. 37 Business Managers: M. Hodsdon, M. Tapley Specials: C. Getchell, C. White Jokes: G. Lovett, C. Worcester, R. Small, K. Goodwin, D. McAvey. In 1969 Dale McAvey sold $554.49 worth of magazine sub- scriptions, the highest seller in the history of Hermon High School. At the beginning of this year's magazine drive, Dale was presented with a trophy honoring him as the highest seller to date in the magazine drive program in the state of Maine. Nute, Manager. Hermon maintained its record of never having been shut out from the State Cross Country Meet. The Hawks did this by the barest of margins needing third place in the Rcgionals to qualify. They tied Hampden for third in a field of nine teams in the Rcgionals in Orono. It took strong performances by the whole team and in particular by Senior co-captains Dale McAvey and Peter McClarie to beat and tie teams that had won over them earlier in the season. The Hawks regular season record was three wins and five losses. They finished in fifteenth place in the State Meet. 50 Varsity Basketball ROW Is D. Stubbs, J. Clark, M. Hodsdon, R. Leavitt, A. This year's varsity team undertook a rigorous pre-season training schedule. In order to be eligible for the team each player had to run a mile in a specific time. After severe outdoor practices, led and devised by our amiable coach, Niles Nelson, the team finally came in out of the cold to concentrate on the game. This year's team consists of Seniors: Rickey Downing, Dave Smith, co-captains; Jeff Doughty, Mike Hodson, Kit Leavitt, and Glenn Simpson. The team receives a lot of help from Juniors: Dick Small, Will Kitchen, and Jerome Clark with Sophomores: Ray Leavitt, Doug Stubbs, and Arthur Terrill, all adding great strength. Inexperience among the team was a major problem this year with the rules being changed from six-man ball to five man ball, but with the fine coaching of Mrs. Bryant and a few JV boys, the squad has shown a great improvement since the first few practices. With most of the team underclassmen they will have an excellent start for the future.
