Dedication We, the Senior Class of 1970, proudly dedicate our edition of the MICROPHONE to Mr. Robert Carrigan and Mr. Robert Winn, for all of their guidance, patience and understanding, sense of humor and cheerful nature, and the closeness of their friendship. Life holds no more valuable lesson than a lesson in giving, and you, Mr. Carrigan and Mr. Winn, have taught us well by your selfless devotion. We wish for you everything that you have desired for us. 2 In loving memory of our classmate, Beverly Fitz Duran, who left us in youthful tragedy. We understand death for the first time when he puts his hand upon one whom we love. The members raised funds to give scholarships to graduating Seniors. One of the projects of this year's Society was in purchasing a framed bulletin board to list the NHS members of our school. Hermon Cross-country Team Concludes One of Best Seasons The Hawk Dalers finished ninth in a field of thirteen schools in the Class M division of the State Meet at Colby College in Water ville on November 1. Their previous best show- ing for any year was tenth place. The team qualified for the state meet by gaining third place in the Sectionals behind a strong Schenck (2nd in the State Meet) and Orono (4th in the State Meet) teams. Eight other teams were eliminated in that sectional from entering the State Meet. The Hawks started the season slowly by losing to Hinckley School. From that time on the Hawks improved, reaching their peak in the Sectionals. Hermon this year had a new course of about 2. 6 miles. Jim Hicks tied for the new course record in 15:30. The varsity included the following boys: Darrell Garnett, Jim Hicks, Delton Lawrence, Dale McAvey, Peter McClarie, Danny Pelletier, and Carl Pickard. J. V. members were Tom Crosby, Jim Nute, Wayne Sewall, and Lenny Withee. Managers were Bill Russell and Bruce Pickard. 7 ) a rs itij iasAefha KNEELING: J. Pierce, R. Downing, W. Elston, J. Doughty, W. NILES NELSON Jl The Varsity Basketball team started the season with great odds against them. Being a loser for three years causes a team to lose spirit as well as all moral support. This feeling was broken when Hermon Hawks had a victory of 67-55 with the first game of the season with Medomak. fj Unlike most teams we started practice two months before our °Tirst game. Each player had to run a mile under six minutes and two miles under 15 minutes to be eligible for the team. After building up endurance we went to the gym to work with the basketball. The team went on to win over several point worthy opponents and land in the Class L Eastern Maine Tournament with a full head of steam and a 12-5 record. The team is well coached by Mr. Niles Nelson and plans tournament wins. The seniors on the team are Dick Bartlett, Gary Ross, Wayne Elston, Rex Kneeland, Bruce Dough- ty, and Bill Bailey. Even with the loss of three starters the next year's Varsity should hit the tourney, having Jeff Doughty, Dave Smith, Mike Hodsdon, Jerry Clark, Rick Downing, Willard Kitchen, Glen Simpson, Paul Douglass, Dick Small, Ray Leevitt, and Doug Stubbs returning with experience. The Hermon Hawks were held from the field by rain and field conditions causing a late start and only light practices in the home field. Old Town walked away with the first game. The Hawks found the season very discouraging with several close defeats. As the season progressed the Hawks improved and went on to win two of their last four games. Bob Downing, Larry Smith, Chris Dunifer, Willie Ross, and Rick Martin were the experi- enced ball players. Bob Downing and Kit Leavitt were a special asset to offence as well as Larry Smith with a . 553 batting average which was tops in the P. V. C. The Hawks are looking forward to next season with experienced seniors, Gary Ross, Lance Russell, and Bill Bailey. The Juniors will be supplying a lot of the punch with Kit Leavitt, Dave Smith, and Paul Douglass. Sandra St. Louis '70 CHARLIE GRASS The usual day of piece of grass doesn’t vary much from day to day. That is, of course, depending on the season and the last time the lawn was mowed. The piece of grass I am going to tell you about is on my front lawn near the small maple tree. This blade of grass caught my eye during the beginning of the spring before I mowed the lawn for the first time. I guess, it caught my eye because it seemed to be crying, as my lawn mower neared the tree. Wondering what was going on, I stooped down to ex- amine the grass more closely. To my surprise the little blade of grass was crying, and it seemed to be talking or maybe even praying to itself. Dumb- founded, I asked the blade of grass, whom. I’ll re- fer to as Charlie, What's the matter? As I spoke, I could see Charlie had a little face which before had been hidden on the under side of him. When to my complete surprise Charlie spoke back and he said; Please don't cut me down again. All my life just as soon as I grow up nice and tall, you come with that awful contraption and you cut me down. .If you think it doesn't hurt, well, try running over your toes. Charlie then broke down and started crying again. I didn't know what to say. I mean, how do you comfort a piece of grass ? ! ? Finally I got him quieted down and said that I wouldn’t mow the lawn any more, and he was so thankful. I went into the house and told my parents I would never mow the lawn again and, of course, they wanted to know why but what could I tell them? They finally said all right; but I think they thought I was getting to much sun or something. This tale may sound a little bit far fetched, but on a hot day, sometimes your imagination runs wild; especially, if you'd much rather be relaxing in the shade with a cool drink. So when your parents tell you to mow the lawn, watch out for Charlie Grass. You wouldn't want to hurt his feelings. Willard Kitchen '72 THE LIFE LINE The storm and sea raged on knowing the ship was weak. Grappling, tearing at the weary framework, Waiting for victory. The line was a hero. The people didn’t recognize him, But were thankful and prayed for the last two. The storm and sea were furious. They thrashed and sounded savagely. Now the ship, the precious framework. ()ar L iterary (5 uc en s Teetered precariously. The wind and sea lashed away. The ship toppled, now the line sank. The sea leaped and devoured the last two. All felt sorrow, save the wind and sea. The life line, had it failed like they say? No, I think not. Ralph Noyes '71 THE ENDLESS TIME The creek was always quiet like this early in the morning. The birds chirped and sang their greeting to the early morning sun. As the sun climbed in the sky, the mist lifted and the dew shone brightly on the grass. I sat very still, wait- ing and listening intently. The slightest sound I heard was noted and recorded in my mind. The sounds of the thrush, the jay, the old grey squir- rel in the oak tree, and the brush of the grass as the breeze rushed through it, making it dance- were all familiar to me. I had learned to hear these things and identify them when I heard them. I could tell where my rock was by how the sun felt and how the water sounded as it made its way from the Tennessee Mountains, so many miles away, through my little valley. I was but a whisper in this valley; no one had ever seen me, no one knew about me, and no one cared. I was alone and I was satisfied with this. I spoke what I wanted to say to the animals, the water, the woods, the grass, the flowers, and the sky. These were my friends - they could also de- cide my fate. Should I lose the brotherhood of these things, my life would not last long here in in the wilderness. Anyone, who has ever spent a night in the un- known wilderness, surely must have felt the fear that my first night here held for me. My loneliness and sorrow over the recent loss of my parents showed that I must have friends, but for me, friends had to be the animals here. I had run from loving rel- atives who wanted to take care of me, because they were strangers and their home presented a threat to my freedom. So I had come here - to the valley of my creation. It was here in this same valley that my parents had met, fallen in love, and made plans to run away from these same relatives to be married. These things happened so long ago. My mother often told me of these flowers and trees and this brook. She had sat here many times on this rock, looking down into father's adoring eyes and laugh- ing and singing and loving. When I sat here I felt close to her and wondered if perhaps she was sitting beside me as father had beside her. The fawn I had been waiting for touched her cool nose to my cheek, and I looked up. The sun- light danced on the green leaves, making crazy, changing patterns on the ground around us. Hello, Lonely , I spoke to the fawn. I noticed that she was losing her delicate white dots. Soon she, like her mother and the others, would grow up and away from me and have babies of her own. A wave of sadness swept over me. They all grow up, 1 whispered. They always grow up. ” Polly Mellott '71 THE ATIS As I always am late, I must compensate, So when I drive, I start to accelerate. Sometimes I begin to exaggerate. But I don't want a cop to humiliate Because then a newspaper would promulgate, So a fake name I would simulate. The judge would then retaliate And my body someone would have to resuscitate.
