Seniors are nearing the end of four years of work and fun. Character and individual talents have developed. The outstanding abilities of many are displayed in varied phases of school life. Every senior has one goal in mind - gradu- ation - and all else is centered around that goal. Juniors highlight our school year with Junior Exhibition, an event highly anticipated and long remembered. Sophomores have half completed their high school career and freshmen have just begun. To both, graduation still seems an unreality. Yet, all the classes are united through the interest and enthusiasm shown, A deep interest in learning is possessed by many, causing our lively discussion groups, selfcreated chemistry experiments, and the projecting of new ideas about old subjects. We have expressed the spirit of Hermon in our classes and have made I 96 7 an academically successful year. 8 cgenzbfs xA'k MM in W'f'AM'm GASS CQFS SEATED: Mr. Ernest Starbird, Advisor, G. The following pages are jilled with pictures of the clubs, leaders and organizations which symbolize our enthusiasm and spirit at Hermon. This year is nearly over, but our spirit in joining clubs and organizations and participating in government mustn't end here. Instead, it must travel with us as we enter the world as adults. One day, when we turn once again to these pages, we ought to remember that we contributed to the spirit of our school by taking an active part. ' ' KW '5W'M 'h V Myzjforop 012977 GSW SEATED: D. The Hawks repeated as Pendale League Champs in 1966 with a score of 34, Bucksport 50, Orono 66, and Hampden 81. John Trott earned a medal in the Pendale League Meet placing third. Hermon qualified in the Sectional gaining third place. They repeated their best previous showing of tenth place in the State Meet. Hermon had no seniors on their 1966 team. The top time on Hermon's home course by a Hermon runner was John Trott's 14:55. For the first time Hermon had seven runners under 16:00 over the home course. Next year's team may well be their strongest yet, dependent on the return of the top seven runners and their continued improvement, combined with the dedicated and experienced coagqhing of Mr. Lord. j J Q-E . The Boys' Varsity Basketball team, although completing the season without a win, showed some good possibilities and promise for the coming year. The team will be hurt very little by graduating members as there was only one senior on the squad at the end of the season. The world of spirit is the image of a concrete inner humanity, of an experience of human destiny, of human love and death, and of human tragedy. Spirit affirms its reality through man, who is a manifestation of spirit. The term spirit is applied in a very wide sense. Spirit is used to denote all kinds of col- lectives. We speak of the spirit of a people, a class, a profession, an army, or a family. We speak or the spirit of an age, and we even speak of the spirit of materialism - of that which denies spirit. We speak, too, of the spirit of communism which is itself the death of spirit. In this sense, spirit loses its specific meaning and becomes a clue to an identity. Thus, the use of the category spirit, in relationto collective groups is mislead- ing and should be guarded against. Spirit is not nature, nor even psychic nature, but truth, beauty, purpose, and freedom. Spirit introduces the qualities of wholeness, unity, and design into man's psychic life. Spirit is a being in itself of not being deter- mined by itself. Thus, spirit is existence in one's own proper world and is one's own property. Gail Littlefield Class of 1967 LUCIDITY He lay in the dark alley sobbing in pain. His body was badly bruised and beaten. Will stared in horrow at the small child, he couldn't be more than eight years old. Guilt rushed overWill as the impact of the rash action of him and his comrades dawnedwithin his conscience. Indeed, his friends were still laughing and hurling crude insults. Dirty Jew! Rotten murderer! Why did we do this? What possessed us to chase this little kid and throw rocks at him? What right had we to kick and beat on him? These thoughts raced through Will's mind as he gazed at the child, so defenseless and in evident pain. He stared in wonderment at his tormentors as he pleaded, Help me, somebody. Will turned and looked hard at his companions, but their faces were un- clear, contorted with hate and prejudice, suddenly Will was revolted with them all. He walked over 58 gn ofozbtzaf Goncepfs to the child and gently gathered him in his arms. Don't be afraid, he whispered compassionately, I'm going to take you home. Walking down the streetwith the small Jew in his arms,Will hardly heard the derisions of the others as his eyes met those of the little boy, eyes full of sincere gratitude and understanding that warmed the very depths of Will's soul. Diana Tibbetts Class of 1967 FAMILY AFFAIR On our planet known as Earth, there is a family known by the name of Spirit. There is School Spirit, Team Spirit, Christmas Spirit, Na- tional Spirit, Freedom Spirit, Love Spirit, and Religious Spirit. School Spirit is given the job of activating morale in students, and making them want to re- present their school in any way possible, while Team Spirit's function is to put forth the idea of working togheter as a whole. The happiness and jolliness of Christmas Spirit makes his job quite easy, since influencing little children and making them happy is not always hard, but National Spirit has to encourage citizens of each country to have respect for their government, to obey regulations to improve , the nation, and to have pride in thei-r country's beauty and heritage. Revolutions, con- stitutions, and protection of civil liberties illus- trate Freedom's crusade against tyranny. Love, with a mother's tender touch, looks after the rest of her children, and humanity, with gentleness and understanding. She is the cause of much argument, and the healer of many sorrows. Her power is mighty and she is the center of all things. Re- ligion is the communication between God and man- kind, so with fatherly interest he attempts to seek out the answer that each individual presents in prayer. He holds a world for all to look forward to, through eternity. So one notices how the combined word Spirit strives to support the well being and satisfaction of each individual. This is certainly a FAMILY AFFAIR and spirit in itself. Steven Tibbetts Class of 1970 Cheryl Tibbetts W Qspzlrzf SPIRIT To many it's a sort of intangible ideal An imaginative thing, not actually real, But it helps guide our lives, motivates what we do Whether we laugh and joke or we pledge to be true. Some think it's incentive, a spark burning bright The same that has always lit Freedom's light, And still you might hear that it's something you S96 Well, maybe. it is, you can't prove it by me. To different people, it means different things A feeling of victory, an angel with wings, The joy found in giving, these all take the part To me it's a language, expressed by the heart. LIVING SPIRIT In the church The body rests, He'd lived his life And done his best. The tears trickle Down their cheeks, But in the air A Spirit speaks. Richard Simpson Class of 1967 No one could help it, God gave his call, Please don't worry I love you all. I've lived my life, So please don't cry, I'll meet you in The by and by. Rebecca Homsted Class of 1969 LOCKER PE RSONALITIES Every locker I've seen reflects the person- ality of its owner. For instance, Harry-in-a- Hurry's locker is topsy-turvy, with no order. And it seems that every time he opens it, he has to slow down and pick his books up off the floor. There seem to be lots of these! And then there is the neat type, like Larry-Line-'em-Up. His books are always in a neat row, with no loose papers floating around. He's usually the type that likes alphabetical order and all his books the same size. Lots of times between these two extremes, there aer personalities totally unique, but usually un- noticed. Take Under-Dog-Debbie. The book she wants is always on the bottom. And there's Lucky Louise, whose locker is a tangle of papers, books, and sweaters. She never loses a thing out of her locker onto the floor. And, as always, there's Snack-Bar-Sam. He's the guy who is always eat- ing. Hence, his is a locker full of candywrappers, sandwich papers, and old ice cream sticks. Often, there is apicture collector who uses his locker to exhibit his most prized photos. And there is usually a Combination-Charley, who's a going guy and always busy. His locker is a combination of all the other types. Have you ever wondered what type of personality you have? I'll bet your locker could tell you! Mary Lynn Burgess Class of 1968 SONNET II A flighty sprite, an intangible one That dwells in the thoughts and deeds of mankind, Through countless ages before and to come A presence needed to search and to find. The types are many and each important To provide incentive, pride, and fairness, A combination quite significant, The difference between defeat and greatness. All these are brothers with a common fame One's national, one's school, another-team, Christmas, religion, love of freedom's name, Especially love, are what spirit means. The 1967 Microphone is Hnished, and the staff sincerely hopes it captured the spirit and excitement of the past year. A yearbook is not produced by one single effort. It requires team co-operation and spirit. Both were qualities of this year's staff May thanks to our exceptional staff They all contributed to the success of this year's Microphone and we are proud of each of them. Thanks to every one ofyou. A special thanks to the faculty for allowances and mutual assistance given. We appreciate the patience displayed while the staff was absent on ads, and while pictures were taken for our yearbook. We would like to say thank you also to our yearbook advisor Mrs. Bemis for her guidance in presenting this annual Her dependability and help were great assets to us To the underclassmen a fond farewell and sincere wishes for success. May your individual senior years mean as much to each of you as ours meant to us The Senior Class of 1967 s x r 1 y A... . ,. ,M AM, ,....,., -.,..,. ,, A...
