The Hermon Varsity Basketball team ended regular season play with an 11-5 record, de- spite the many injuries that the team had during the year. The Hawks placed fifth in the tourna- ment with 92 points. Despite the lack of height, which the Hawks never have too much of, they held their own against a fast, tall, good shooting Lincoln team, which was seated fourth, until the Lynx started fastbreaking. The Hawks lost 85-58. The Hawks lose only four Seniors, R. Reynolds, A. Thayer, A. Freeman, and C. Small, so they will have eight men back for next year. The wind from the propellers accented the chill of the winter night air. Don never liked the winters of New England. He would enjoy the warmer climate of his training base. Eve visualized his lean, tanned body gliding over emerald waves behind a colorful speed boat. How they had had fun last summer! They both knew that it would be their last for a while. Don wanted so much to go on to college after graduation, but an inner ambition to serve his country in time of war won the conflict. Eve was going back to college after November vacation. She would hear from him in two or three weeks, but not every day. They would both be busy, and besides, their love need not be proven by a daily letter. Many of their friends had married after graduation, but Don and Eve's love would survive a separation. Their mellow love would become deeper as the future waited for them. Eve smiled at the thought of her girl friends. Each had received an engagement ring to represent her boy friend's love, but all Eve needed was a glance from Don. It was the little things that meant a lot to them. Eve thought of the pullover she was still knitting for Don. He jokingly said she could take her time to finish it because he wouldn't be needing it for a while. Eve started the car as she watched the plane disappear into the darkness. She had the little things and their memories to comfort her until Don came back to her again. Eve finished packing her suitcase the next afternoon and decided to spend her remaining hours at home on a postponed visit to her grandmother’s. Nana represented loneliness to Eve. Eve's uncle had been killed during the Korean War. Nana and Grandpa's love had strengthened with the death of their oldest son. Five years later, Grandpa had died of lung cancer. Eve had inherited an old-fash- ioned quality of strength, love, and religious morality from her grandmother. Nana was really a modern individualist in her own silent way, thought Eve. She knew the heart- ache of losing a loved one in a war, of loneliness, and the joy of living. She didn't enclose herself in a shell of the past and shut out the changing world. She did not harbor prejudices against the different and the strange. She always liked Don even though he dressed as the typical modern teenager. She asked her gardener in for lunch even though his skin was a different color. She read books on Catholi- cism even though she was a devout Protestant. She didn't build a wall of indifference around herself because something was strange to her safe little world. Eve waved a last farewell to her mother and father as the bus pulled away from the station. How contented and safe they appeared as they stood at the corner of the small town Main Street. At that moment, Eve could not help thinking of Don, a half a world away, fighting in Viet Nam. Eve's college years passed neither slowly nor quickly. Her hours had been filled with themes, lectures, prom programs, friendships and letters to Don. Don wanted her to have fun even though he wasn't there, but her many dates had only strengthened her love for him. Occasionally she heard of the war from veterans who were finishing their interrupted educations. As Eve sat waiting to receive her diploma, she thought of how she had matured. She felt ready to face the world, but there was much that could not be learned from books and lectures. The cruelty of reality could not be conquered from a thesis. These could only help to understand the problems that must be solved in a world of war, prejudices, and loneliness. Eve spent the next summer with her family before taking her position at a large elementary school in another state. Eve was anxious to start getting acquainted with the innocent personalities of small happy children. In one letter, Don had written about the dark sad eyes of a lonely abandoned child. The war had toughened Don into a man, but it had not toughened his heart. Eve could almost hear his heart crying to the people back home. Don't forsake this little girl and the rest of her people! He had re-enlisted,but he would becoming home next spring for good. Outside the apartment building, the October rains beat portentously against the window panes. Eve decided it was a day for cleaning out her college trunk which her mother had just sent. She could hear the sounds of the busy city above the rainfall. The mailman was a little late today, probably be- cause of the rain. He always kindly teased her about her New England accent. If there was a letter from home or from Don, he took time to bring it up to her. Suddenly the doorbell rang. Eve kidded him about the proverbial phrase through rain, sleet, snow or dark of night ... He handed her a letter from home and cheerfully said good day. As she opened the letter, an obituary fell from the envelope. Eve read the opening lines. Outside, the rains beat louder like the drums of a marching procession. She went to her trunk. She knew where it lay. She really always knew why it never got completed. Her heart ached as she realized how easy it was to destroy the stitches that had taken so long to create. There was nothing left now, but the balls of yarn that represented the unfinished pull- over. 58 Graduate of '66 of talented writers THE SKY IS GRAY . . . The sky is gray and although it is still early fall, the air has turned sharp and crisp. The waves, dark and icy-looking, roll in and burst into thousands of tiny pearl-like crystals on the reefs along the coast. Out on the water a small dingy, with two sailors and a civilian aboard, works its way toward the shore of the island. Maybe it's the cold or maybe it's just the feeling which is riding in the air, but whatever, everyone senses, as if by aforboding, that there is something strange andun- explainingly mysterious about the island which causes a shiver to race through three chilled bodies. Suddenly, the small craft lurches to one side in the white-capped swirls, and a sailor is tossed overboard. The other two watch in silent terror as he sinks down through the depths. And then, almost instantly, the water churns and bubbles in an undersea disturbance, then all is quiet. A cold blast of air slaps against the faces of the two remaining-men as they peer into the dark water. The dingy bobs and rocks on the surface and then is slowly surrounded by a pool of dark red liquid which is the only trace of the seaman who was flung into the sea!
