Thomas, Ass't Treasurer; Mr. Nichols, Advisor; L. Ashe, Treasurer; N. Garland, Secretary; S. Snow, V. President; A. Freeman, President. Class of 1966 News As we entered H.H.S. as Juniors, we realized that in two short years, we would be on our own in the adult world. Financially, our class profited from a dance, fudge sales, a food sale, and the selling of soda during the X-mas parties. Also, our class won $50 from the magazine drive last fall. Six members of our class were elected to National Honor Society, and twelve were chosen for Jr. Exhibition. We have three boys participating in Varsity Basketball, three boys in J.V. Basketball, and three girls on the Varsity Cheering Squad. We are looking forward, with anticipation to our last year at H.H.S. Class of 1967 News Feeling that we were full-fledged members of the student body, the sophomores once again faced all the excitement, hard work, and fun that we witnessed last year. Our first project was a slack dance to aid our treasury; our class is now selling H.H.S. pencils and pennants at ball games and at school. Our future plans include a rummage sale, food sales, and another dance. The members of the class of 1967 anticipate two more years of fun and learning at H.H.S. D. Joy, Treas.; K. Clukey, V. Pres.; T. Hanscom, Pres.; Mr. Maheu, Advisor; G. Gordon, Sec.; J. Stevenson, Ass't Treas.; D. Kinney, Ass't Treas.; N. Bevan, Ass't Treas. C. Lord, President; M. Clark, V. Pres.; B. Taylor, Treas- urer; L. CoWallis, Ass't Treasurer; G. Littlefield, Ass't Treasurer; J. Goss, Sec.; Mr. Starbird. Class of 1968 News The class of 1968 entered Hermon High School on September 2, with an enrollment of 100 pupils. After spending a hectic day of finding our classes and meeting new people, we finally became accustomed to our new high school life. We are proud to say that the H.H.S. Majorettes are represented mostly by our class. They include Nikki Bevan, Kathy Wheeler, Tanya Hanscom, and Kathy Clukey. No definite plans for social activities for the year have been made yet. However, we plan to have a dance on April 30, and hope to have many more. The Freshman class anticipates three more years at H.H.S. THE CLASS OF 1965 The last official picture of the senior class; Advisor, Mrs. Bemis The National Society of the Daughters of the Amer- ican Revolution is an organization of women, who can trace their ancestry to those who helped gain American Independence. Their main goals are to preserve his- torical sites and to educate for greater partiotism. Each year a girl from the senior class is chosen by the seniors in conjunction with the faculty on the basis of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism. Marilyn Munn was elected as this year's D. A. R. Good Citizen and is entitled to lifetime membership in the organization. DAR GOOD CITIZEN HAWK STAFF From Ed's Desk . Club News .... CHEERLEADERS VARSITY The Varsity Cheerleaders began the school year, 1964-1965, with the main purpose of earning money. With the Junior Varsity Cheerleaders, we had a casserole dinner, a dance, and several Victory hops after the basket- ball games. With the profits from these functions, we bought white blouses, and megaphones. The squad consists of three members from the Junior class: Cindy Fowle, Nancy Garland, and Lorraine Ashe; also, we have four members from the Senior Class: Diana Goodwin, Gaynor Littlefield, Captain, and Sharon Overlock, Co-Captain, with Mary Blackwell as an alternate. We want to thank all those who helped us to make this year a success. Diana Goodwin, Lorraine Ashe, Sharon Overlock, Gaynor Littlefield, Nancy Garland, Cynthia Fowle. The average classroom is filled with students avidly grasping for knowledge, but knowledge for what? To work efficiently in class, a student must have keen perception of things, people, and events. Have you ever tried to write a composition in class? Pretty nearly impossible. Harry, have ya heard the joke about the bear trap? I'll tell ya after I finish this composition. Teachers are supposed to know the student but— Harry, close that window! Whataya trying to do, pre- serve me? —teachers know only a piece of work and a certain grade. What page did he say, Bob? Hey, look on four forty-four. That's 'im exactly. Marks are a means of grading work--not people . Ed-Ed-Bob, tell Ed I want'im. Ed, whaja get on your Physics test? 95? 94? But teachers have no way of comparing so many people other than by an A or B or C or less frequently an F. Who threw that chalk? Watch it, Harry ! How far have ya read in that stupid book? No-o-o, I'm not gonna read it 'till I haveta. Will ya close that window? What page are ya on now? Hey, watch me get Frank between the eyes with this wad of gum. Yeah, I found it on the bottom of muh chair. I got 'im Harry! Right between the lookers! Asaresult there has been an increased push for better grades. The parents offer rewards for— Steve, how many points didja get Satur- day? Fire up Steve ol' boy! Students have come to expect something for everything, to expect a material reward for learning. The student works for only one thing—good grades instead of working for education itself. Lousy—next period. Ya got ya homework done, Harry? Neither 'av I. Quiet! The professor is talking to us. Yes, sir, I have been paying attention, but it is Monday Morning, sir. I've got to finish this theme. School is an institution for learning based on the principle of accomplishments and rewards, failure and punishment, forced education— Look, I can't tell ya that joke now. Wait 'til recess. No, I 'aven't got my homework done. I dunno. Maybe I'll get my math done in physics class. I'm doin' today's English assignment now. We have become educated puppets, and the school presently offers no solution. We must cultivate, on our own, our own in- terests by learning all we can, by reading widely, listening in class and generally broad- ening our knowledge of the world. Harry, quit poking me! No. I haven't read it. It wasn't assigned, was it? There's the bell. Let's get out of here. I haven't got my phy- sics done yet, have you? It's the educational system, Harry. It's got to be. Dave Richardson 65 MEMORANDUM Grammar school is a miniature society. It contains all snobbery, prejudice and social pressures of adult society. As a child attending grammar school, I didn't notice the nature of school society because I was too involved in it. But now I notice many of these traits. The importance of money is ever present--even in grammar school. One of my clearest memories is connected with the power of wealth. My sixth-grade teacher always let the first person to finish his writing lesson erase the boards. I was first to finish my lesson and proudly took it to my teacher. She told me to take my seat. The next person to finish his paper took it to the teacher and then erased the boards. He always erased the boards. I then realized he was teacher's pet. Also, his father was one of the wealthiest merchants in Bangor. In connection with wealth is poverty. There were many poor people in my school. I always watched them at a distance. All my friends laughed and teased them. For some reason, one unfortunate girl invited me to her house for the afternoon. Why I'll never know, because I never spoke to her or even smiled in her direction. For some even odder reason I decided to go. When we got to her house, she changed from her torn and unpressed clothes into her play clothes,” which were dirtier and more ragged. The condition of her house turned my stomach. The whole house effused the smell of burning wood in the stove. Grease and dirt were every- where. Because of my protests, we played outside. Then I found out that because this family lacked a car I would have to walk home. It must have been four to six miles home, but I didn't mind the walk; it gave me time to think. I came to the conclusion that this girl needed me as a friend. I decided I was the one to help her. The next day at recess I asked her to join my little group of girls. My friends were shocked. They played with her, but at a distance, and I was the only one who threw her the ball. At lunch time my friends wanted to know what was the matter with me. Why was I playing with A.T. T. (Annie-tattered-and-torn)? I tried to explain her predicament. The point was made clear that I c hoos e her to them. I never spoke to her again. For many years I tried to justify my choice by saying I never liked her, I just pittied her. But for two days she was my friend. In fifth grade my next-door neighbor, Diana, and I were invited to a classmate's house for her birthday party. I went to my girlfriend's house, present under arm, and together we walked to Gwendline's house . We were the first to arrive—and the last. No one else came. We had fun; and walking home, Diana and I agreed Gwendline was really nice. When I got home I started to tell mother about the party. I said something about how funny her little brother's hair looked. Then I added, Of course I guess all Negroes have curly hair, but so do I. That shot off a reaction like knocking over the first domino in a line. After a few questions my mother called my girlfriend's house. Neither of our parents knew Gwendline was a Negro. We never felt the need to distinguish that fact. We didn't really know why, but we were never allowed to play with her. Our friends at school called us nigger lovers for a week, and screamed every time we touched them. The scream warned us not to spread the black germs. We soon followed the crowd, and we too were running from the black girl, all thoughts of the nice girl, whose party we'd had fun at, forgotten. But when I look back now, I realize I haven't forgotten. I remember the girl, I remember the party, and I also remember the cruelty-the cunning of a society based on snobbery and prejudice. 53 Sherry Stuber 65 PlUHtl'lld NWTMti COOVCUTIM Cowntt MtAIN toi««« Tuot MMtMt r«U«T IS J5 9 ,21 21 J ACMtCVKMCMT UTVCU Tnm «Ml e._____ •AMKINO tYITCM IOO 0-70-74 • CLOW 70 7AILURC Hmmm . . .That was quite an interesting account of your personal contacts at the Folies-Bergere, Mr. Maheu!
