I i 7 ie 3en or G a °f y ermon 7£9A presents tAe 1964 ss Sc Aoo ophone foreword We sincerely hope that we have succeeded in presenting the events of the past school year and stimulating the memories of our class - mates, teachers and activities. Our theme is keys. The first key opens the most important door, that of knowledge. This key determines our destiny in life. The next key leads us through the door of activities. By participating in these various activities we strive to gain better association with our fellow man and country. Sportsmanship is the key to athletics. Sports, which play an important role in our school, are reflected by the enthusiasm and participation of our student body. As we move on to unlock new doors, we begin to comprehend the perplexing problems of the world around us. ly)il un 7iie.se JJayes Mininisi ration Seniors QIndercfassmen Activities Sports Advertis e nenis 2 IK icrop i none SEATED: P. Among its many activities it participated in a performance for the President of the United States who was assassinated one month later, an event which will remain as outstanding in the future history of Hermon High School. This event was acknowledged by a personal telegram of congratulations from United States Senator Edmund S. Muskie. The Hermon Band was invited out of a choice of all the musical organizations in Penobscot County to entertain the Penobscot County Teachers' Institute at their 1964 conclave. The Hermon High School Band was the host for the Second Annual Central Maine League Band Festival for the year 1964, the largest musical event in the history of Hermon High School. It involved seven high schools and 240 players. The Hermon Band performed the incidental music to the dedication of the new Carmel-Levant Junior High School in the presence of the highest educational dignitaries in the State of Maine, including Mr. Kermit S. Nickerson, Acting State Commissioner of Education. Other Band school and civic contributions are: Memorial Service for the late John F. The Hermon Varsity Basketball team had an exceptionally fine season under the devoted coaching of Joe Cardello, now in his second year at Hermon. Hermon ended its 1963-64 season with a flashy 15-1 record, and despite their move up to Class L they made an excellent show- ing in the Eastern Maine Tournament. The Hawks won their first game by defeating Calais 68-58, but went on to loose a heart-breaker to Madison in the semi-finals 61-57, despite fine efforts by Jimmy Reynolds to pull it out in the final stanza. The reserves saw much action throughout the season. Although the Hawks are losing D. Booker, W. Edgecomb, G. Goss, D. Millett, W. Munn, and J. Reynolds, they can still look forward to a successful season next year with a great per- centage of their experienced boys returning along with some fine prospects from the Jayvee team. The team would like to express our appreciation forthe fine improvements made in the gymnasium. J epo 'i Under the fine leadership of Coach Wilfred Lord the Hermon Cross-Country team expanded its schedule during the 1963 season to include meets with Bangor, Brewer, and Old Town, all strong L teams in the state. As expected these class L rivals displayed top much power for Hermon to record a victory. In C.M.L. competition, however, Hermon held two wins over Hartland and East Corinth and three triumphs over Hampden for a 7-0 record up to the league meet. Lacking one of its best runners on the day of the league meet, Hermon was able to manage only a second place finish in this competition. In the state meet, Hermon ran against some strong M teams to finish 16th, ahead of Ellsworth and behind Piscataquis of Guilford, schools that have been among the best in the state in past seasons. Gary Goss had an outstanding time of 12:35 in the state meet. The Hermon Hawks have six or seven men from last year's team, who if they work up to their capabilities can move Hermon up near the top of M competition in next year's cross- country season. Bangor and Brewer will be running in meets at Hermon next year for the first time. 47 Dave Millett '64 Jirfs () arsity J)asJ?et6a I KNEELING: E. Sutherland, J. Pike, J. Homsted, B. Smith, J. The prospects for next year look very good although the team is losing the following five seniors: Judy Graves, Bev Jordan, Judy Homsted, Barbara Smith, and Ellen Souther- land. The top scorer for the year was Judy Graves with an average of 18.7 points per game. Bev Jordan represented the team at the foul shooting contest held at the University of Maine. They would also like to thank Mr. Noyes, Mr. Homsted, Mr. Lund- quist, the Cheerleaders, and team supporters for backing the team during their successful season. The J V Girls' basketball team had a very successful season fortheir first year with a 7-2 record. This year gave the J V girls the experience they will need in the future for varsity girls basketball. This team was also under the supervision of Coach R. Babb. Such a feeling of unbounded depression has crept into my psyche that I wince, trying to escape from this ugly place. The monochromatic terrain made itself unbearable by its hideous visage. Shimmering tendrils of heat arise from the sands and disappear into the vast glare which appears as a luminous lake. The small mesquite trees cling tenaciously to protruding mounds of sand; their lives spent resisting the abrasive action of wind-driven sand. The sun beats down. Cacti are poised and are ready to absorb the life-giving rain of which the desert has deprived them, leav- ing them parched and practically lifeless. The sun ferociously beats down. Barren hills dash about in the scorching wastes trying hopelessly to escape reality; the wind in- cessantly pursues them as if it were a game. Screaming dust monsters careening through the valleys obviate all in their paths. Fleeting balls of dead sagebrush play tag among the dunes. The only animal life is a lonely lizard. Everything is monotonous; the sun slowly sinks to its death. Gary Goss 64 One Boy Alone The boy sat alone on the barren mountain that night. The air was cool and breezy, and the stars and moon shone brilliantly upon the earth. Leaving all the earth and everything therein behind; the boy stared into the sky above. Unnoticed, a man with that same emptiness in his eyes stood near by watching the boy. As if moved by some hidden force, the boy glanced quickly at the man. Neither of them moved. The look in the boys eyes suddenly changed. The emptiness turned to anger, a look of hatred which became overwhelming within him. The boy started to tremble; he held on to the rocks around him for support. He opened his mouth to yell to the man to leave him in his peaceful solitude, but no words came. The man, quietly and quickly, turned and walked away. No words came from his lips; just the expression on his face was different. Gone was the look of an empty dead being. In its place was that of a hurt little boy, who couldn't have what he wanted. The boy sitting still, watched the man walk away. His trembling ceased. He turned again to the sky. But something was different. The stars and moon no longer gave their warm glow. The cool breeze had turned into a cold wind. He started to tremble once more, this time from the cold. His peace and tranquility were gone. He was not alone any more. No more could he blot out the earth below; it had come up to meet him. l umni Class of 1963 Gloria Curtis--Husson College, Bangor Robert Jarvis--University of Maine, Orono Wayne Smith--Kagan-Lown and Company, Bangor Cynthia Adams--Bakersfield Junior College, Bakersfield, California Paulette Sawyer—Penobscot Savings Bank, Bangor Iris Smith--(Mrs. Everett Kennedy) Bangor Shoe Company, Bangor Penelope Rich--University of Maine, Orono Lenore Taylor--Secretary, Freezes, Bangor Linda Tardiff--Gigarre Supermarket, Brewer Wesley Hallowell--University of Maine, Orono Anita Witherly--Bookkeeper, Star Beef Company, Bangor Carol Shaw--Secretary, Rice and Miller Company, Bangor Jo Ann Howes--Dentist Assistant, Farmington Norine Hillier--Fort Wayne, Indiana Robert Haskell--University of Maine, Orono Gail Partridge--(Mrs. Albert Duniver) Hermon Dale Douglass--University of Maine, Orono Carolyn Blake--School of Practical Nurses, Waterville Phillip Booker--At Home, Hermon Kenneth Cousins—Zayre's-Bangor Shopping Center, Bangor Mary Lanphier--(Mrs. David Vance) Newport Henry Bunker--United States Army, Fort Devens, Massachusetts Richard Dansereau--Massachusetts James Robinson--State Employee, East Corinth Stanley Garland--Husson College, Bangor Regina Mahon--Tucker's Shoe Factory, Brewer Donald Malloch--Meat Cutter, Hunt's I.
