Ohe Senior Glass of Olermon on9h School proudly presents Ohe 1963 JIGcrophon e fjcfitor SPaufe e Sawyer Cassis an fjcfi ors Sfary Stoss—foenore St ay for 7, ore won The Microphone broadcasts over a wide area the ideas of mankind. These ideas are about life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness as outlined in our constitution - ideas which have been long in formation as has our Microphone. Our school this year can be accurately com- pared to our country in the early eighteen hundreds. The building has been enlarged, the student body has increased and the Faculty is re- latively new. For these reasons the Microphone has been enlarged and improved to keep up with this modern trend. This year we present to you a modified, modernized yearbook which we believe everyone will thoroughly enjoy. Hard work by the citizens is credited to the success of our country and such is the case of our yearbook, you make it a success by your co-operation. During the past four years the largest percent of participation of the class members has been in Sports. The Senior Class is very pleased that a member of our class was chosen by the school to be the Winter Carnival Queen, JoAnn Howes. The Class wishes to convey our thanks to the persons who have made our four years at Hermon High School successful and fulfilling. Our days at Hermon High School are coming to an end. The passage of time will inevitably erase the vitality of these years; they will ebb into that which is memory-------never to be forgotten. The literacy of a people is a measure of their capacity to accomplish good works. The American educational system, which for many decades was the most universal of any nation in the world, is now being challenged on many fronts. We are told that the most literate people of today are the Japanese. The new look is Russian education which has produced a Sputnik and Cosmonaut, at least a year in advance of our own efforts. A few years ago the American populace was conditioned to the idea that a high school education represented a nominal educational level which was demanded of the coming generation and upon which, through hard work and personal effort, a person might be ex- pected to build a successful career. Since World War II, however, there has been a rapid change in this attitude; and today a college education at the bachelor's level is rapidly be- coming the minimum standard established by parents, industry, and the economic demands of our times. Seventy percent of the parents of America indicated that they expected their children to go to college. At present some 200,000 of our most able youths fail to go on to college - many of them for financial reasons. College can be really hard on you as a person because of the great variety of people you meet and experience you have and because you, alone, must make important decisions and account for yourself. All these things help to develop you into a more aware and understanding person. You bring what you already have become to college with you. The more mature, responsible, and understanding you are, the easier it will be to understand and appreciate others and to make your decisions. Theodore A. Johns 63 American Education From every report and study which we read we find that the Russians and most of the other large European nations have better educational systems than we do here in America. The ability of the U.S.S.R. to launch satellites aroused deep concern in America. And various study groups were organized to reappraise our educational system. These study groups made their reports but the people of America were interested only in catching up with the Soviet Union in space. So the main idea was overlooked. This idea is that we must realize that the promotion of Democracy and the advancement of our principles through our educational system must be greatly stepped up. The future of our government rests with us, the students, and it is solely our responsi- bility. A man cannot walk into a factory and take over the operation of the most complex machines and be expected to do a good job. Neither can we future voters be expected to run our country properly without the proper training. The job of running our country will pass to us and we will be expected to do a good job. Yet, during our twelve years of school we are given just one course on the actual workings of our government. This course is Civics which does not serve its purpose because it is taught in the Freshman year and the student loses most of the main principles of the course before he is out of school. So the challenge to American Schools and to Americans in general is not wholly a matter of competition with the Soviets, but rather a challenge to educate the youth of America so that we will become good citizens, well trained to carry on the Great American Democracy. 46 Dale Douglass 63 {literary The Way to a Man's Heart--Burn Ever since I was old enough to stand on a stool and stir cake batter, my family has been subjected to my masterpieces of culinary art. I, an avid collector of recipes, experiment with any and all concoctions, es- pecially those with exotic appellations (lean make a mish-mashed hash in four different languages). You would despair to the point of utter despondency if you could see mein the midst of a culinary chef - d'oeuvre, and I do mean the middle. Batter, adhering to the floor, cupboards, counter-tops, and my face; flour powdering my hair and grease smudging my glasses complete the picture ofthefastidious-homemaker-of-the-year. It is easy to differentiate be- tween my favorite recipes and those seldom used by the dips and daps of past glories mingled with the stains left by tears of frustration which renders the recipe almost illegible; I once tried to retype some of the most used recipes but discontined this practice when unintentional al- terations were discovered. I am a firm believer that every chef de cuisine puts something of herself into everything she creates. Thus, to cook with finesse one must never follow the recipe as written (that is, only for the novice); to give the creation an individual flavor, add an un-called for ingredient and or decrease the amount of another. The real challenge to a creative cook is leftovers. It is advisable to cook an extra amount of food to provide practice in the area of leftover cooking. I've even re-cooked leftovers! Thankstoa fairly blase' (we'll eat it, but what is it?) family who has partaken of such dubious delicacies as glue-like mashed potatoes, rubber-like jello, soggy cake and soupy fudge, I have advanced my cuisine enough to write Ten Easy Lessons on the Art of Boiling Water subtitled Pepto-Bismos—A Cook’s Best Friend . Penelope Rich 63 Snow Just look at that snow, all those beautiful flakes, Oh, how could one know how much energy it takes, To move all that powder, as soft as duck’s down, When it piles into drifts, all on your town. Go shovel your driveway so the car can get out, Come on, shake a leg, don't procrastinate and pout, But if one waits long enough it is felt, Warm weather will come, and the darn stuff will melt. John Clifford ”64 47 Ill — 2iler ara It was late dusk; the moon was just showing on the horizon. Colby Gordon and Susan Colbath were leaning on the pasture bars watching the calf and its mother rubbing noses. Colby: Gee! I'd like to be doing that. S. Colbath: Go ahead. It’s your cow. Tell the truth, Kathy, did you really catch Dave flirting? I certainly did. That's exactly HOW I caught him. Mr. Carr: What were the three great difficulties to over- come during Jefferson's administration? J. Reynolds: Women, liquor, and gasoline. Mrs. Bemis: Arthur, that book is getting kind of worn out. Arthur H.: I didn't do it Mrs. Bemis: I didn't accuse you of studying THAT hard. R. Russell: Mrs. Bemis, I've found the trouble with your car—you have a short circuit in the wiring. Mrs. Bemis: Well, for goodness sakes, lengthen it. Mrs. Scruggs: Why do you say the radio and television will never replace the newspaper? Mrs. Myers: Ever try swatting a fly with a radio? Salesman: I've been trying to see you all week. When may I make an appointment? Executive: Make a date with my secretary. Salesman: I did, and we had a swell time, but now I want to see you. Mr. Lundquist: Why does a woman say she's been shopping when she hasn't bought anything? Mrs. Page: For the same reason a man says he's been fishing when he hasn't caught anything. 48 l umni CLASS OF 1938 Barbara Aieta--(Mrs. Barbara Rose) Brewer Leroy Bartlett—American Gear, Bangor Paul Bean—Colorado Merritt Emerson--Fish's Garage, Old Town Shirley Higgins--(Mrs. Shirley Foss) Milo Norma Miller—(Mrs. Roger Pinkham) Hermon Elinor Overlock—(Mrs. Elinor Stevens) Hermon Theodore Perkins—Teacher at Hampden and Minister at South Levant Marion Porter—(Mrs. Weldon Lord) Brewer Douglas Sherburn--Webber Oil Company, Brewer Perdita Smith--deceased Annie Witherly—(Mrs. Vernon Dinsmore) Veazie Mary Sue Allen--Secretary, Kagan Lown, Bangor Lawrence Appleby--Hermon Sally Bartlett--(Mrs. Philip Thompson) Bangor Daily News, Bangor Ronald Clark—University of Maine, Orono Edward Conant—Withee's Garage, Bangor Carolyn Cousins—Viners Shoe Company, Bangor Cary Bishop--Pleasant Hill Dairy, Hermon Gary Bishop--Army, New Jersey Patricia Carle—Husson College, Bangor Barbara Dansereau--(Mrs. Kenneth Sutherland) Orono Bernard Duplisea--University of Maine, Orono Richard Emerson--Main Truck Rental, Bangor Iona Freeman—Eastern Trust Banking Co., Bangor Charlene Gellerson—New Franklin Laundry, Bangor Mary Ann Jordan—Hermon Phyllis Keating--Hermon Bruce Newcomb—Hermon David Grant--Coast Guard, California Kenneth Hartley—Queen City Charterhouse, Bangor Thomas Homsted—University of Maine, Orono John Page--Maine Vocational Technical Institute, Portland Edwin Patten--Air Force, Texas Alan Pinkham--Marfields, Bangor Sharon Reardon—Student at Eastern Maine General Hospital, Bangor Philip Thompson--Bangor Ralph Tozier—Webber Oil Company, Bangor Charles Witham--Maine Vocational Technical Institute, Portland CLASS OF 1962 ife at 7 .77S.
