Sponsored by WALDO ROBINSON Pulp Dealer GEORGE’S for Men’s Clothes Bangor, Maine Tel. 8-3646 Hermon 142 Main St AN EXPERIMENT I was about eight years old when I decided that the doctor’s life was for me. Wait for schooling? Not mei I wanted to start practicing right then. My first patient was a beautiful blonde (doll that is.) I decided that this poor suffering child just had to have an appendectomy. My tools consisted of a large pair of Mothers’s scissors, some of Aunt Lydia's black extra strong thread, and a darning needle (the eye of a common needle was too small for Aunt Lydia's thread) Bravely I cut the stomach of my suffer- ing patient. My first discovery was the apparatus that makes the doll cry when laid down. This was good enough for me. 1 took the gad - from her cloth body. Delicately I sewed the infant up. My operation had been a success. A Senior Boy MY PLANS FOR THE FUTURE My plans for the future Are not quite clear: They seem to be far. And yet they are near. The jobs in this world Are very hard to find; There are very few of What I have in mind. I may go to college To receive further education And then go out and find Some desirable occupation. I've thought of a secretary, And of her file. But I thought also I might travel awhile. I may join the service And go far away: I'll find me a job, And return home some day. I guess I will wait And let the future ride: And when the time comes, 1 will decide. E. Lindsey ’57 MAINE'S VIOLENT WOMAN Hurricane Edna was her name: A fiery girl was she She almost wrecked the State of Maine Then vanished out to sea. Washouts, there were many: Let-ups, there were few. Cost Maine a pretty penny, And broke New Brunswick too. R. Duplisea '56 FEAR1 THE FRUIT OF IGNORANCE Fear always springs from ignorance as said by Ralph Waldo Emerson is a statement of utmost truth. We have seen it expressed so many times. In a child, when it is alone in the dark, in a man, when he has something unknown to face. How often do we find our- selves with this same feeling of uncertainty of what is beyond, the moon, the stars, the sun, what comes after? Through the ages men have always feared something unknown. They looked across the sea and these questions arose in their minds is there land? Are there people living there, or does the earth just end? But with the courage and faith of brave men their questions have been answered and with this knowledge comes the security of being safe. Should not we then continue to prove that as fear is the fruit of ignorance, so is security the fruit of knowledge? E. Libby '56 THAT WAS A VACATION Have you ever been to a large city which you knew nothing about? I visited Boston when I was twelve years old. Every- thing was so different. There were no walk lights and people drove like mad. While I was there, I rode in the sub- way. I put my dime in when I wasn't supposed to and got a scolding from a bossy old man. You might have thought it was his dime. We visited Revere Beach and I never saw such sights in my life. Grandpas and Grandmas pranced around in skimpy bathing suits no matter how fat or skinny they werel The beach reminded me of flies on a rotten apple, so I kept my distance. Next I rode on the roller coaster. I wasn't going to be scared I told myself. As I started down, terror gripped me and I was speechless. My stomach turned cartwheels, my head jerked from side to side, my mouth hung open and my eyes popped out. I settled for a cupie doll as a souvenir which I proudly held in my lap while riding on the subway back to the hotel. People lined the aisle. We started off with a jerk which sent a fat lady pitching back into my lap. 1 laughed because everyone else did, but tears really filled my eyes for my Cupie doll's little round belly was stuck to her back bone and I couldn't pry it free. I came to the conclusion that Boston was a crazy, mixed up place and I wanted to go home. A Senior Girl 32 ■ • KEY HOLE SPY Here we are again your key hole spy ready to unlock some of the latest gossip which has been piling up around Hermon High since you last heard from us. We hear two Senior boys have a big interest in the East Corinth and Newport cheerleaders. . . It;s a good thing one of our teachers can run, 1 predict he will be using this talent in the near future escaping from the girls. . . .Is it true our advertising staff has a court record. .Richard?. . .We heard Mr. Davis has in- creased his life insurance 1 wonder why?. . .Can anyone tell us where a certain teacher was at 3:00 A. M. November 11?.. .Bernard Walls had Becker watch our for Barbara she has a pretty bad temper. . .What about this romantic flying between the 8th grade girls and the Freshmen boys?. . .It has been rumored that a certain curly headed Jr. boy has quite Mary times in Houlton. Why do you suppose the bog road has had a road block of parkers especially in front of G.P. 's house?. . .The Coldbrook road has been busy with visi- tors from the Freshmen and Sophomore classes. 1 wonder who???. . .A certain Freshman has been throwing a lot of parties lately. It wouldn't be to attract a curly headed Sophomore, would it? I wonder what happen- ed at the Junior's parties? Ask those who went they will tell you. Or will they?. . I heard the Junior High kids are pretty proud of their basketball players. .And should be too. . . What really happened to those mega- phones that were lent to three certain cheerleaders. . .Why did a group of girls cry at Hampden and Husson? Ask Deanna. . . .What new stone was added to the Freshmen class this year. H. P. might be able to tellyou. I heard a new romance has started between a certain Junior boy and Freshman girl. He has a new blue car, doesn’t he? Oh, by the way boys, there's another free girl around these parts. Could it be she is a cheer- leader. Just what was Leota Mullen a witness to the last nigh of Southern Serenade ? Spring fever is striking early in the Sophomore class. Isn't it Red and C- ? Another Senior girl has been having a lot of attention lately. Huh Millie? One of our teacher's didn't practice what she teachers. Remember March 3 and 4 Mrs. Gray? ?? A male teacher seems to have a lot of fun with his Physics class. Oh that j oor girls nose I Is there a story behind E. L. 's muffler coming off one night? The new curfew is pretty early Isn't it Stretch ? There seems to be a couple of good basketball players in the Hall family. Isn't Mrs. Myers patient with her Imps of ’56 ??? A Senior boy has been watching a Junior girl ever since the F. H. A. party. All good things must end 1 fear but we'll have more newes for you next year. Compliments of THEODORE A.
