FRESHMAN INITIATION The annual Freshman Initiation was held October 27, 1953. We feel that everyone had a good time, even the Sophomores who really had a tough time thinking of enough stunts for the great number of Freshmen. Some of the stunts were repeated from recent years. It seemed that at recess and at noon it was kind of hard to find a few of the Freshmen. Do you think they could have been scared of us, or were they being clever in hiding? I wonder if Ravena Lawrence and Eleanor Lindsey improved on their counting ability? They only had to count the people coming in and out of the building ! Do you think Gloria Goodspeed will make a good mother? She had quite a time feeding Larry Ormsby his dinner. I wonder why Christine Reed was crying the night of the initiation. ‘.Suppose it could have been because she was rolling an onion across the floor with her nose? Leland Nowell must be experienced at washing faces. He certainly did a good job washing Grace Overlock's. The Freshmen displayed good sportsmanship both during the day and the night. CAROLYN LINDSEY Class of ‘56 THE MAGAZINE CONTEST The Magazine Contest began on September 15, and lasted until the 1st day of October. The school's quota was $1400 but we were very successful in going over the top with $1556. The Senior Class won first prize of $35 for the class sales- manship award and the Juniors were runners up. Individual prizes were won by Danny Robinson, Priscilla Dole and Robert Reardon in that order. THE SPELLING CONTEST Jean Hill, Jean Pinkham, Carolyn Lindsey, and Ravena Lawrence represented Hermon in the League Spelling Contest held at the Hermon I.O.O.F. Hall November 6. East Corinth won the trophy. FROM THE EDITOR We wish to thank the Bangor School department for the use of the Mary Snow gymnasium until our new gymnasium was completed. Much hospitality was shown in letting the basketball teams use this building in which to practice. We also wish to thank the Triumph I.O.O.F. Lodge of Hermon for the use of their hall for the Senior dance and the Spelling Contest. This year being the first year in the new high school, we have become aquainted with new rules, schedules, and systems. Also, our new rooms and equipment, which we have lacked in the past, need special attention at all times to keep them in the perfect condition they (continued on page 12) Compliments of J.F. J. Simpson: How did you find your steak, sir ? N. Reed: It was luck, I happened to move a piece of potato and there it was. The sergeant, an Air Force veteran, had been training the Air National Guard unit in the fall cold. They muffed every drill and finally the sarge halted them I At ease men, he said with forced calm, I want to tell you a little story. When I was a little boy 1 had a lot of wooden soldiers. Now and then I would lose some of them and I'd cry. My mother would say, Don't cry, son, some day you'll get all those wooden soldiers back againl At this point he exploded, And believe me, you wooden-headed idiots, he shouted, that day has come. Tramp at back door: Ma'am, 1 don't know where my next meal is coming from. Mrs. Roberts: Well, this is no information bureau. D. Robinson: (In chemistry class) Why does a traffic light turn red? R. Mullen: You'd turn red, too, if you chang ed in the middle of the street. G. Peavy: What did the Glow Worm say when the nightingale ate him up ? H. Bates: I don't know. G. Peavy: That's one time I was too bright for my own good. L. Nowell: Benny, what would you have if you crossed an onion and a potato? B. Lufkin: (After some time) An onion pota to? L. Nowell: No, a potato with runny eyes. Mrs. Myers: C. Pickard: Mrs. Myers: C. Pickard: 'Can you type? Well, I use the Lindburg method. 'What’s that? Circle and land. C. Tapley (to waitress): Do you have frog- legs? Waitress: No, it's rheumatism that makes me walk this way. Robert Goodspeed asked if anyone could give him the definition of a cow in General Science Class. D. McGinley was quick to reply, that she is an animal that has four walkers, four down hangers, two lookers, two crookers and a fly banger. At the Junior parish house dinner, Shirley Good- speed brought in a plate full of bread that was ex- tremely thin. Did you cut these, Miss Goodspeed? Yes, I cut them. She replied quickly. Good, said the patron, I'll shuffle and deal. Policeman: Young lady, why are you going so fast? R. Hillier: Well, my brakes don't work and I am hurrying home before I get in an accident. Mr. Bemiss took his three children to a basket- ball game this season. While the kids were there they hollered and hooted so loud that they couldn't talk for about two days. Someone asked him a little later, if he was going to take them again. No, he replied quickly, I'll take my wife. Ruth Campbell, after working extremely hard on a long typing assignment in which she was mak- ing more mistakes than usual, finally replied, Oh well, I didn't want to be a typist anyway 1 Compliments of JOHN PAUL COMPANY 55 Pickering Square, Bangor 8 BROCKWAYS FLOWER SHOPPE Central St. Bangor
