Text from Pages 1 - 80 of the 1954 volume:

2W tea tion For the past two years you have made our school an interesting place in which to work. Your guidance has certainly been an asset in helping us reach our perspective goals. .And so we, the students of Hermon High school, dedicate this 1954 issue of the Microphone to you, Mr. Bemiss. Hermon High School Hermon Maine Sclioof Our New School Building Coming back to school this year after the summer vacation was a little more pleasant than usual. We had a new school building with which we were hardly aquainted as only six weeks had been spent in it. During the summer, new tile floors were laid and the Chemistry Lab completed with four new lab tables and hundreds of dollars worth of equipment. Our new high school has eight class rooms, a library and a lab. Our gymnasium is in a separate building along with the Industrial Arts shop. Besides the newness and neatness of the school, there are also other modern features for convenience and safety: an intercommunication system permits announcements to be made to every room at one time. Also, devotional exercises are participated in by every room at the same time. The safety feature in our building is an automatic alarm system which eliminates the chance of a fire starting in the building without being noticed. If the temperature in any room goes above 140 degrees, the alarm sounds; it is also triggered if any room’s temperature rises more that 20 degrees in seven seconds. We, the students of Hermon High School, are proud of our new build- ing and it is our earnest desire to have our school look as neat and as new ten years from now as it does today. To have our wishes carried out, we must all do our parts in keeping the rooms we work in and the exterior free from any ugly characteristics. This must be not only our attitude but the attitude of all who follow us in the years to come. STANDING: Rena Hiilier, Natalie Phillips, Allen White, Caileton Pickard. He was home with us at Christmas, And here just once before, But still it‘s been a long time Since he left the ocean shore. He‘s missed in Maine and Ohio, and, From him we long to hear; The boy who's far away from us, The one we love so dear. There‘re other boys gone with him And their folks miss them, too. But soon the war'll be over, and, They'll start life all anew. I wish they'd prove to Russia That we are well equipped. The “Reds” would raise the “Old White Flag” To show us they were licked. Then towards home our boys would sail, Some wounded and not well. They all, then, would be free to shout: “We've served our time in Hell!” NATALIE PHILLIPS Class of ‘54 I take my pen in hand To write of days gone by; Of summer which has faded Against the autumn sky. To retell all the glory I found in summer days, And most of all to kneel before The Lord and sing Him praise. Summer in its glory Will soon be in the past. September brings fulfillment Of the dreams we hoped would last. And we begin to notice, Against the autumn sky: The fading marks of summer, The scene of days gone by. We feel that everyone had a good time, even the Sophomores who really had a tough time thinking of enough stunts for the great number of Freshmen. Some of the stunts were repeated from recent years. It seemed that at recess and at noon it was kind of hard to find a few of the Freshmen. Do you think they could have been scared of us, or were they being clever in hiding? I wonder if Ravena Lawrence and Eleanor Lindsey improved on their counting ability? They only had to count the people coming in and out of the building ! Do you think Gloria Goodspeed will make a good mother? She had quite a time feeding Larry Ormsby his dinner. I wonder why Christine Reed was crying the night of the initiation. ‘.Suppose it could have been because she was rolling an onion across the floor with her nose? Leland Nowell must be experienced at washing faces. He certainly did a good job washing Grace Overlock's. The Freshmen displayed good sportsmanship both during the day and the night. CAROLYN LINDSEY Class of ‘56 THE MAGAZINE CONTEST The Magazine Contest began on September 15, and lasted until the 1st day of October. The school's quota was $1400 but we were very successful in going over the top with $1556. The Senior Class won first prize of $35 for the class sales- manship award and the Juniors were runners up. Individual prizes were won by Danny Robinson, Priscilla Dole and Robert Reardon in that order. THE SPELLING CONTEST Jean Hill, Jean Pinkham, Carolyn Lindsey, and Ravena Lawrence represented Hermon in the League Spelling Contest held at the Hermon I.O.O.F. Hall November 6. East Corinth won the trophy. FROM THE EDITOR We wish to thank the Bangor School department for the use of the Mary Snow gymnasium until our new gymnasium was completed. Much hospitality was shown in letting the basketball teams use this building in which to practice. We also wish to thank the Triumph I.O.O.F. Lodge of Hermon for the use of their hall for the Senior dance and the Spelling Contest. This year being the first year in the new high school, we have become aquainted with new rules, schedules, and systems. Also, our new rooms and equipment, which we have lacked in the past, need special attention at all times to keep them in the perfect condition they (continued on page 12) Compliments of J.F. The sergeant, an Air Force veteran, had been training the Air National Guard unit in the fall cold. They muffed every drill and finally the sarge halted them I At ease men, he said with forced calm, I want to tell you a little story. When I was a little boy 1 had a lot of wooden soldiers. Now and then I would lose some of them and I'd cry. My mother would say, Don't cry, son, some day you'll get all those wooden soldiers back againl At this point he exploded, And believe me, you wooden-headed idiots, he shouted, that day has come. Tramp at back door: Ma'am, 1 don't know where my next meal is coming from. Mrs. Roberts: Well, this is no information bureau. D. Robinson: (In chemistry class) Why does a traffic light turn red? R. Mullen: You'd turn red, too, if you chang ed in the middle of the street. G. Peavy: What did the Glow Worm say when the nightingale ate him up ? H. Bates: I don't know. G. Peavy: That's one time I was too bright for my own good. L. Nowell: Benny, what would you have if you crossed an onion and a potato? B. Lufkin: (After some time) An onion pota to? L. Nowell: No, a potato with runny eyes. Mrs. Myers: C. Pickard: Mrs. Myers: C. Pickard: 'Can you type? Well, I use the Lindburg method. 'What’s that? Circle and land. C. Tapley (to waitress): Do you have frog- legs? Waitress: No, it's rheumatism that makes me walk this way. Robert Goodspeed asked if anyone could give him the definition of a cow in General Science Class. D. McGinley was quick to reply, that she is an animal that has four walkers, four down hangers, two lookers, two crookers and a fly banger. At the Junior parish house dinner, Shirley Good- speed brought in a plate full of bread that was ex- tremely thin. Did you cut these, Miss Goodspeed? Yes, I cut them. She replied quickly. Good, said the patron, I'll shuffle and deal. Policeman: Young lady, why are you going so fast? R. Hillier: Well, my brakes don't work and I am hurrying home before I get in an accident. Mr. Bemiss took his three children to a basket- ball game this season. While the kids were there they hollered and hooted so loud that they couldn't talk for about two days. Someone asked him a little later, if he was going to take them again. No, he replied quickly, I'll take my wife. Ruth Campbell, after working extremely hard on a long typing assignment in which she was mak- ing more mistakes than usual, finally replied, Oh well, I didn't want to be a typist anyway 1 Compliments of JOHN PAUL COMPANY 55 Pickering Square, Bangor 8 BROCKWAYS FLOWER SHOPPE Central St. Bangor Mr. Davis visited the Eighth Grade Science Class yesterday and lectured on Destructive Pests. Burgess: Is Mrs. Myers hav- ing a class? J. Simpson: No, she is having second year typing. R. Doane : Doctor, my head is feel- ing like a lump of lead, my muscles cramp like iron bands, and my neck is as stiff as a pipe. Doctor: Good heavens, man ! you don’t need a doctor, you need a plumber! Mrs. Prescott, (to a young dinner guest): We are going to say a pray- er now, Bobby. Do you pray at meals at your house ? ’ B. Lindsey: Oh no. My mother’s a pretty good cook. P. Dorr: What is that which has never been felt, seen, or heard, never existed, and still has a name? M. Drew: I don’t know. P. Dorr Nothing. A laundress, annoyed by cars on a dusty road soiling her clean clothes, posted this sign on the road fifty yards ahead of her clothesline, DRIVE SLOW- LY : BIG WASHOUT AHEAD; Definition of a door: Something kids get a bang out of. Did you hear about the lad who shot his parents just so he could go to the orphan’s picnic? An Australian was trying to impress an American from Texas with the sights of Australia without much success. Finally when they saw a kangaroo hop- ping across a field, the Texan said, Well, I’ll grant you one thing: Your grasshoppers are a little larger than ours!! Impatient diner: Are you the girl who took my order? ’’ Waitress: Yes, sir. Impatient diner : I can’t believe it-you don’t look a day older. Glenn Duplisea studied one of the questions on the examination paper long and earnestly: State the number of tons of coal shipped out of the U. S. in any given year. Then his face brightened and he wrote : In 1492, none. P. Griffin: Is this a good river for fish? H. Freeman: It sure must be. I can’t get any to come out of it yet. Mrs. Lovely: Are you the boy who jumped into the river and saved my son? ’’ R. Simpson: Yes, Ma’am. Mrs. Lovely: Well, where are his mittens? ’ E. Lindsey: Did you have an in- teresting time at the dentist? R. Wilson: Goodness, no!! I was bored to tears.
