Jorgen has been a great asset to the soccer team this year, contributing to every game. Wrestling is another sport he enjoyed here at H.D. After he returns home, he will go to the University and then serve the obligatory ten months in the Army. Jorgen likes the U.S., as it is much like his home. He has adjusted very well here, and is friendly with everyone. Athletics GIRLS SOCCER Despite heavy personnel losses, the winning tradition was carried on by those left. Fine coaching and consistent play made up for the lack of experience, which resulted in a successful season. Row 1: J. Kentfield, S. Denesha, P. Whitton, S. Jordan, B. Aldous, B. Collins. Row 2: B. Livingston, Coller, L. Mehaffy, P. Ray. Missing: L. Donaldson, K. Newcombe. An excellent season in many ways, this year we ‘bested’ 1984's win record by one. We also added a promising group of seventh graders to our team. It was a year for improving sportsmanship and cooperation. Teammates tended to respond to each other more with support and encouragement, rather than criticism. We learned how to alter our defensive play to meet strong challenges. (Next year we’ll be readier for Mor- ristown, whom we lost to twice.) The only sad note was losing our seasoned ninth grade players to Mr. Nee's Varsity. They’ll each be missed. BOYS SOCCER Row 1: B. Boys Varsity Soccer: Under new leadership and competing against larger schools, the team posted a fine record. The large number of young players will undoubtedly help the continued success of the team. Boys Modified Soccer: When the season started these young athletes knew very little soccer and had very little experience in athletics. When the season ended they had done very well. They can be proud that they played very well as a team. This fine team play allowed for a very good defensive record. Having lost only three games, they know what it takes to win. They will be excellent soc- cer players when they develop the individual skills needed to make them all complete soccer players. VOLLEYBAL Row 1: C. Ostrander, C. Foster, K. Newcombe, K. Tiernan, Co-Capt. J. Coller, Co-Capt. S. Schofell, K. Carpenter. Row 2: Coach Ostrander, L. Donaldson, T, Morrison, S. Shorette, B. J. Thayer, L. Briggs, H. Warren. JV Volleyball: With only two experienced players returning to start the season the team improved rapid- ly and played up to their potential. Through their coachability they finished in a second place tie with a 6-4 win-loss record. Captains Jeanne Coller, Sheryl Schofell, and Kathy Tiernan contributed steady defen- sive play throughout the season. Tracy Morrison was the most accurate server with 96.3% of her serves be- ing good. Varsity Volleyball: The varsity volleyball team continued it's winning ways with a second place finish this season. Overall this team was not as skilled as past teams, but they were the best group we’ve ever had for team work. Coach and players had an enjoyable season. Row 1: S. Denesha, P. Whitton, K. Allen, K. Matthews. Harris. Row 2: Ms. Mattraw, T. Edwards, H. Wells, P. Barney, The varsity Demon wrestlers finished the league dual meet season with a 1M record, the best of any team in Section X. In so doing they are the Division II champions for the fifth time in the last six years. At the Class B Championships the Demons outclassed the field by 90 points, placing eight wrestlers on the champions podium. At the sec- tional tournament the wrestlers finished point out of first place. Three Demons were sectional champions. Dan Bray, who holds the school record for most wins with 31. placed first and was voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler in Section X. Butch Cleveland and Greg Baker were also sectional champions. Five wrestlers finished second. David Brown completed his first two years of varsity experience with 50 wins, including a championship at Essex that won for him the Most Outstand- ing Wrestler of the tournament for his win over the Vermont State Champion Team captains were Bray, Cleveland, and Law. Allen B Divisional Champions for the 1985-86 campaign, the Demon grapplers finished with a 9-3-0 league record. They were able to beat all Section X competition at least once, beating B divisional competition with a clean sweep. Francis Hewlett led the team with a perfect 19-0 record and the JV Sectional crown. Exchange student. Jorgen Wahlstrom wrestled exceptional- ly well with a 12-3 record. Jeff Whitton was unbeaten in JV action. Paul Whit- ton provided leadership and finished with a 11-4 record. Darrin Snyder com- pleted the year with the same record. Several other wrestlers did very well and will be of great assistance to the varsity next year. GIRL’S BASKETBALL By blending their individual strengths, this year’s JV players formed a well balanced basket- ball team. Relying on good defense, unselfish of- fense, and smart overall play the girls compiled a very respectable 10-3 record. At 13-2 in the regular season, this has been the most successful team on record at HD. The highlight of the season was defeating highly ranked Morristown, something no other team had done in four years. Another high point this season was adding another HD girl to the prestigious Varsity 1000 Point Club. Brigitte Aldous reached this milestone in the last regular season game and will find a place in HD record books along side her sister, Heidi. Row 1: J. Coller, J. Kentfield, S. Schofell, L. Despite much talent, the team lost more 1 and 2 point games than is common for a whole league of teams in one season. Every game had high points. Three quarters of good play would be shown, only t0 be (ounteracted by one quarter of inconsistency. The Demons did have highlights during the year, though, such as taking honors at the Winter Tournament at Colton. Tom Doiron was an All-Tourney selection and Marc Hayes won M.V.P. honors. Hayes was also the Demon's sole N.A.C. All-Star selection. A su prismgly large number of sophomores and a couple of tumors played this year, and all of them received starting roles during the season. The future looks good for Coach Amo. Row 1: R. Wentzel; Mgr., P. Collins, M. Hayes; Co. Capt., R. Wentzel, K. Davis Row 2: M. Peters, M. Hamilton, G. Smith; Co. Capt., B. Amaral; Co. Capt., T. Tiernan After a blazing start, the boys JV basketball team ran into trouble mid-season. The loss of top scorer and rebounder Fred Morrill to the varsity ranks unquestionably depleted the already scant number of participants. Throughout the year, despite disciplinary interventions and chronic illness, the team played well together. Bolstered by a nucleus of experienced sophomores, the talented younger players were allowed to blossom. These freshmen will certainly assist the JV endeavors of Coach Dusharm next year. 55 GIRL’S 7th-8th BASKETBALL Row 1: L. Filippi, S. Morrill, K. Carpenter, L. Gardener, L. Mehaffy, A. Sawyer, S. Thayer Row 2: Mr. Hazen, L. Liv- ingston, K. Adams, L. Dibble, C. Foster, S. Denesha, C. Brabaw, N. Bacon, P. Ray The Girl’s Basketball program at Hermon DeKalb has given our girls the opportunity to particpate with the best basketball programs in the area. The current junior basketball team had no previous basketball experience two years ago. With a program that emphasizes the philosophy that everyone must play, the girls have worked very hard to increase their skill level. I personally would like to thank parents, Miss Mattraw and Coach Denesha for their help and determination in making our youth program a big success. Mr. Hazen BOY’S 7th-8th BASKETBALL Row 1: G. Plaisted, W. Jordan, B. McGinnis, M. Kentfield, C. Nelson, C. Selleck, P. Dusharm, C. Harris, E. Simmons, S. Byron Row 2: R. Reed, T. Duck, A. Webb, T. Donaldson, J. Smith, J. Coller, D. Bovay, T. Basin, Mr. Bardeschewski We began this season with two goals in mind. First, we wanted to see improvement as the season progressed. Secondly, we wanted to have fun and enjoy the game of basketball while we learned. We divided the boys into two teams based on their size and experience. Our smaller and younger team played some very good teams and even though we didn’t win any games these boys showed improvement and never gave up at any time during the year. The older team played some very good games and defeated several good teams from larger schools. Many of these boys possess the desire and the potential to con- tribute to the winning ways at HDCS. 56 57 Girl’s Softball VARSITY SOFTBALL — Row 1: M. Morrill Row 2: T. Bacon, P. Whitton, D. Amo, A. Tiernan Coach: Ms. Mattraw 58 The spring of 1985 was a very successful and rewarding softball season for Hermon-DeKalb. The team finished with and overall record of 17 wins and 4 J losses. After an early season loss to Morristown. HD went on to win the last ten league games to finish with a league record of eleven wins one loss as Division III Co-Champions. The season had many highlights one of which was an opening game no-hitter pitched by Brigitte Aldous against Heuvelton. HD won the Section 10 Class D title for the third year in a row with a thrilling 3-2 victory over arch rival Morristown. This victory qualified us for the NYS Central Regional Title and an op- portunity to travel to Binghampton to play for the Class D State Championship. We lost to a powerful team from Afton in 8 innings in the semi-finals. Several players I on the team received special recognition from the section. Brigitte Aldous was! named the league MVP. Debbie Amo, Tammie Bacon. Stacy Denesha. Pam Whit- ton and Martha Morrill were selected to the All Northern Teams. Every member contributed to the success of this team and they should all be proud of their accomplishments. The Girls Modified Softball team did an outstanding job this year. They obtained one of the best records to date. The players showed a stellar talent and promise for the future. BASEBALL VARSITY BASEBALL — Row 1: K. Davis, M. Tiernan, J. Bacon, R. Wentzel, M. Murcray, J. Smith Row 2: P. Dusharm, C. Nelson, C. Selleck, M. Kentfield, Coach: Mr. Dusharm The baseball team achieved great success last spring, posting a 5-12 regular season record. In the process, they nearly made the play-ofts. while placing Greg Smith, Jim Sanderson, and David Wentzel upon the NAC All- Star team. Many games were decided in the late innings. Unfortunately, the Demons lost most of the tight ones, but the entertainment given was appreciated, as crowd size and support increased. It is to be noted that Coach Frank Lewis' last season was the successful year of 1985. He left a strong team; juniors, sophomores, and freshman all started last year. Hopefully, under the guidance of Mr. Hazen, the spring of 1986 will be as bountiful. The Boy’s Modified Baseball team had a lack of participation but what they missed in bodies, they made up for in talent. This year’s team worked hard and well together and showed promising potential for the future. 59 Row 1: C. Jones, L. Grandy, E. Chilton, B. Alguire Row 2: Mr. Lewis, M. Gilbert, E. Tracy, D.
