Text from Pages 1 - 82 of the 1984 volume:

There are many reasons why we, the students here at Hermon-DeKalb, chose to dedicate the 1984 Demon to you, Mr. Nee. These reasons revolve around the fact that you care about us. It shows in the way you go about teaching and also coaching. It takes a very special person to be able to reprimand a student for not doing their homework, or an athlete for not trying their hardest. It is ob- vious that you do this for our benefit. We feel that through your smile, your sense of humor, and even your indignation when you get upset, you let us know that we matter. We deeply appreciate and thank you for all that you do for us. It is with our sincere thanks that we dedicate this book to you. 2 Mr. Richard Nelson Mrs. Annemarie FitzRandolph Welcome Many of us have been on the receiving end of the smiles given by the new faces here at H-D. We’ve seen Mr. Richard Nelson, our new Superintendent around quite frequently as well as Mrs. Annemarie FitzRandolph, our new Director of Guidance and Mrs. Claire Ellison, our new Dietician. Our foreign exchange student this year is Monica Zamudio and she is from Tijuana, Mexico. She is living with the Bardeschewski family. We want to welcome all of you here to H-D and we hope to have the chance to return many of the smiles that you’ve given us. Mrs. Claire Ellison Monica Zamudio Mr. Carvel. Mrs. Fenlong, Mrs. Dusharm, Mr. Thornton, Mrs. Young, Mr. Woodrow, Mrs. Morrill. Missing: Mr. Denesha, Mr. Livingston. Mr. Richard Nelson Mr. Russell Forbes On behalf of the Hermon-DeKalb Board of Education and Mr. Forbes, I offer congratulations. As graduating Seniors you have worked hard to prepare yourself for the future. We hope that as you leave for jobs, or the Armed Forces, or college that your efforts and planning help you realize your dreams and ambitions. As a newcomer to Hermon-DeKalb I have only just come to know most of you. I have been consistently im- pressed with your friendliness, common sense, and responsibility. The Class of 1984 leaves a fine record of achievement, as individuals and as a class, that will set a high standard for succeeding classes. Regardless of where your plans will take you, we hope that you will return to Hermon-DeKalb and share with us where you have been and what you have been doing. You will take with you not only your diploma, but also our best wishes for every continued success. jsiiL Richard J. Nelson Superintendent Mrs. Hazelton. Mrs. Shorelte, Mrs. Doiron, Mrs. Amo. We learned responsibility — to make a com- mitment and keep it, no matter how much time and dedication it required. At times we were worn down, but we always struggled to keep a constant pace. For some it was the newspaper or yearbook. For others it was a sport or two. Participants discovered a non-stop will that kept us going in a positive direction. There were others of us, of course, who chose to be less involved in school. We were the ones who plaved the part of the dedicated employees. We worked long hours, received slave pay; but, nevertheless, we had a good time. Still there were times when no one could be catagorized. The times were those when we all gathered for a celebration, for a special picture, or for the lack of anything better to do. On occa- sions like this, we learned about each other; we grew together and made memories. But all good things must come to an end. Here is where we say our farewell to each of you, the Class of 1984. 17 Megan Allen Patrick Earle Amaral Animal Volleyball — 1 French Club Secretary — 3 French Club Member — 2. 3,4 Basketball — 1. 2,3,4 Soccer — 4 National Honor Society — 2.3,4 Class President — 3,4 Class Treasurer — 2 Band — 1 Chorus — 1 Academic All-Northern — 3 Who's Who Among American High School Students — 3, 4 Michael W. A team is more than just a few people who can play a sport well, cheer loud, or shoot on target. A team is all of the people working and striving for one goal — success. Success consists of the hours spent developing the ability to play and perform at your best.lt con- sists of the dedication to attend many practices at any time, keep curfews, and accept team rules. Success also consists of working together and help- ing each other as a team to be the best they can. Success and hard work go hand-in-hand in mak- ing the Demons the best they can be. gfi|ry y j ii ii w1 RGB m Row 1: B. Willard, K. Green, V. Duck, S. Denesha. Row 2: D. Amo, 1. Fenlong, B. Barney, T. This year’s girls' varsity soccer team showed what hard work ana determination ( can accomplish. Faced with replacing three All Star performers lost to graduation, and having a bench short on botn numbers and experience, the girls responded with an 11-2-2 season and claimed the Division 111 championship for the second year in a row. Their play was characterized bv good team work which resulted in solid aefense and balanced scoring. HDCS 0 Edwards 0 O.T. HDCS 1 Knox 1 O.T. The highlight of the season was the final match defeat of arch rival Knox Memorial, league champion, and previously undefeated also the straight set win at Brushton-Moira, a team that allowed us only two points the season before, was noteworthy. The team was characterized by its ability to play up to its potential in crucial situations andf the good play of substitutes when called upon. The team, with over fifty wrestlers, was the HD’s largest ever. Tlie varsity wrestlers distinguished themselves in several tour- naments: they placed first at the Northern Adirondack Invitational Wrestling tourna- ment: second place at the Middlebury In- vitational Wrestling tournament: second at the Essex Wrestling Classic: and fourth at the Beaver River Invitational wrestling tour- nament. Coach's Corner Being the varsity cheerleading advisor for the year 1984 has been an interesting and challenging experience for me. I firmly believe that Hermon-DeKalb has the most talented group of cheerleaders as they have exhibited for you during this season. I feel that everyone should experience and have the opportunity to work with and appreciate the views of seven females at the same time. The girls have given their “all and have shown their complete dedication to their school and teams, as well as to each other. I've thoroughly enjoyed my season with the girls. Hermon-DeKalb has a lot to be proud of with these seven girls acting as their” cheerleaders. Thank you. Betty Carvel Row 1: D. Guidie, M. Comfort, A. Mathews. Row 2: T. Donaldson, P. Barney. K. Steve Morrill, and Jerry Barney. First year hardballers in- cluded freshmen, Marc Hayes, Greg Smith, Jeff Joles, and Richard Wentzel; sophomores Phil Blair and Jim Walrath, and senior, Tracy Belmore, playing his first baseball. The veterans, Jim Sanderson, Kenny Davis, and Dave Wentzel rounded out the squad. 1983 was a season of few wins and many losses, but better than usual pitch- ing, fielding and hitting. The highlight of the season came on an afternoon in May when freshman pitcher Greg Smith spun a no-hit game against Lisbon. 1983 Varsity Softball — coach Rick Bardeschewski After getting off to a slow start, winning only 2 of their first 5 games, the team went on to win 10 games in a row, finishing with 13 wins and 4 losses. In the section 10 class t) playoffs. HD defeated Colton- Pierroont. Heuvelton and Morristown to win the SECTION 10 CLASS D CHAMPIONSHIP They then lost to a fine Massena team in the A-D title game. In the N.Y.S.P.H. Class D Regional Tournament. HD defeated the Section 3 4 representative. Wor- chester. 12-1. for the Class D” Regional Championship.
