Text from Pages 1 - 82 of the 1983 volume:

Dedication We, the students here at H-D, take great pleasure in dedicating the 1983 Demon to you, Miss Kelley. You show a great deal of dedication to your students by advising us in Drama Club, helping us to become bet- ter writers in Writing Lab and also by helping us to gain a better understanding of the English language. For all of the time you spend caring about us and helping us to become better educated in many ways, we sincerely say “Thank-you.” 2 3 Foreign Exchange Student I would like to thank all of you here at Hermon- DeKalb for helping me through this year. I’m glad I came here and got to know all of you. If you ever have another exchange student, I hope you will do for them what you have done for me. It’s very difficult for a person to go to another country with different ways and be accepted. Everyone here accepted me for who I was and I’d like to thank-you for that. I hope that someday some of you can visit my country, Japan. You will be welcomed with open arms as I was here. I will never forget my senior year at Hermon- DeKalb and I have all of you to thank for that. 4 Board of Education 1st Row: Mrs. Morrill, Mrs. Vin- ing, Mrs. Young. 2nd Row: Mrs. Fenlong, Mr. Livingston, Mr. Woodrow, Mr. Denesha, Mr. Thornton. Administration Mr. R. Forbes, Principal Mr. J. Sandwick, Superintendent Students: My message this year concerns one small word that we have all learned to use. The word is rights.” All of us have expressed, or thought the idea, I have my “rights” or I have a right to do what I want to do.” Granted that we have certain inalienable rights” as expressed in our constitution. My concern is that maybe we have stretched this idea to the point where it has begun to backfire” on us as a nation, and as citizens of this great country. Have we begun to lose sight of the fact that with our “rights there is also something called “responsibility? If you, as a student, do not study and do your work, do you have a right to pass, or is your failure your own responsibility? Does an employee who per- forms shoddy work have the “right” to continue on that job? Does anyone have the right to do anything that is detrimental to other people? In a school situation, I refer to disruption of a class, defacing school property, using foul or abusive language, not complying with the rules and regula- tions, etc. In performing these acts, other people are hurt, and when other people are involved, there can be no individual rights. Responsibility is the key. Be responsible for yourself, your work, and your actions. Too many times have I heard students say when receiving a reprimand, “Johnnie did it first. That is not an acceptable answer. Those seniors who obtain a job after graduation should be responsible and make themselves valuable to their employer. Those seniors who plan to further their education will have to be responsible for their own work and time. You make your own success both in and out of school. My congratulations to Mrs. Peters and the Yearbook staff for an excellent book. It is the result of hard work and you have a right to be proud of your book. r This page was paid for and sponsored by your Student Council. 5 iilPf PIIPPPPPFPW Special Services Mr. Leroux Mrs. Bullock, Mrs. Williamson S. We thought we were divine. We teased the “first grade babies” At the ripe old age of nine. Remember back in sixth grade, We looked at HIM with a sigh And dreamed of all the coming days In the huge new junior high. Now it’s eons later As graduation day draws near We think of bittersweet memories And remember yesteryear. Remember the hellos and laughter. Talk over all our fears, Reflect on learning and sharing, Before the good-byes and tears. The coach is getting nervous, a little pale in fright wondering exactly what the consequences will De tonight. One more mile to go, the tension is in the air, but slowly the sweet taste of Victory seems to prevail everywhere. Restlessness is with us as we get psyched up to go, we Eile out of the bus one by one, knowing that this will e one exceptional show. This is it, our key to divisionals, will we take all? If we succeed, no problem, if we don’t, this will be our last call. It is not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game. We're all aware that the BEST will walk away with the title name. As long as there is friendship and respect amongst the team, and as long as we do our best, and our best is what we believe in: This will be the night... the night of the Demons! This year’s championship team was truly successful, not because of its 13-2-1 won, lost record, but because of the extent to which the team reached its potential. The team members worked as a unit and each exhibited the qualities of unselfishness and dedication to improvement so important to the 'team concept’. The good example by the few upperclassmen pro- vided the necessary leadership. Following this example, the younger players worked hard and showed the steady improvement needed from them. This team’s members can be proud of what they achieved together. Girls’ Junior Varsity Soccer Row 1: Managers: M. LaBarge, N. Bardeschewski, M. VanHouse, K. Allen, B. Barr, V. Villafane, B. Inconsistent serve receiving plagued the girls much of the season. Serving was again a strong point this year as the girls served 81.3% of their serves in play for the season, led by Jill Coller, 93.4%. Three girls played their third year of J.V. Volleyball and were a strong stabilizing force offensively and defensively. They were co- captain Jill Coller, Tammy Newcombe, and Teresa Thornton. Newcomers to the team who earned a starting berth and were second and third in scoring to Jill Coller were Freshmen co-captain Stacy Denesha, and Pam Whitton. Second year player Shirley Jordan was a starter who playecf a strong defensive role. Sohpomore girls who spot, started and im- proved steadily through the season were Bar- bara Barney, Shelly VanHouse, and Vicki Villafane. Freshmen who worked hard all year and should see a lot of playing time next year are Kathy Allen, Toni Edwards, and Caron Kanitz. 52 Varsity Wrestling Row 1: |. Whitton, M. Whitton, H. Snyder, D. The varsity wrestling team finished the season at 12-4, winning the B Divisional title. For the third straight year the team took first place in the class B championship tournament; having nine champions. Among their other accomplishments were second place finishes at the prestigious Mid- dlebury tournament and the Essex Classic. Seven varsity wrestlers won twenty matches or more during the season. With only two seniors on the squad, many younger players received a great deal of valuable playing time. Our team stayed in the winning column by defeating many teams who were more experienced and physically bigger. One highlight of the season was when Heidi Aldous scored her 1000th career point at Clifton-Fine; January 31. She is the only person (boy or girl) at HDCS to ever do this. Girls’ Junior Varsity Basketball Row 1: A. Briggs, K. Dubrule, B. Barr, B. Collins, B. Willard. Row 2: J. Kentfield, S. Jordan, R. Ray, J. Kentfield, C. Allen, M. Gilbert. After a slow start, due mostly to a lack of experience, this year’s team put together a very respec- table record. As the year progress- ed the girls showed steady im- provement and achieved a level of play competitive with anyone in their league. Their work and effort were reflected in this increasing caliber of playing from the beginn- ing of the season to the end. 54 Varsity Cheerleaders Row 1: L. Struzzi. Row 2: J. Bessette, H.
