11 “Holy cow! Another substitute teacher!” You guys would make great wives! SCV It’s not Coke in that can!” Give Me Time and I’ll Make You Forget the Rest f ® What a chorus line! And You Can Set it Free ANIMATORS 8,VNLL GIRLS VARSITY SOCCER 1st Row: D. Smith, J. Morgan, T. Whiteford, T. Thornton, J. Burke, A. Newcombe, J. Yerdon, D. S. Dusharm. 2nd Row: C. Woodrow, J. Fenlong, D. Amo, C. Young, M. Whitton, B. Chase, Y. Frisco. 3rd Row: Mr. Nee, S. Frisco, K. Green, T. Bacon, H. Aldous, V. Duck, A. Winters, R. Brown. The girl’s soccer team for 1981 was marked by team spirit and determined play. Despite a number of costly injuries the team pulled together, and with the help of some talented rookies and improved veterans maintained a high level of per- formance. After a successful 1980 season this year’s team was faced with the prospect of having to completely change their approach to the game. The girl’s had to make the transition from a high scoring squad to a defensively oriented unit. They adapted to the new game plan in excellent fashion. The team allowed only one team to score more than one goal in any game all season and recorded five shut-outs. This type of defense and team-play, combined with timely scoring, again sent the team into the Section X playoffs. In the playoffs they defeated arch rival Edwards before bowing in overtime to Massena, in the semi-finals. GIRLS JV SOCCER 1st Row: K. Newcombe, D. Willard, K. Tiernan. 2nd Row: V. Duck, D. Amo, A. Winters, J. Fenlong, T. Bacon. 3rd Row: B. Collins, A. Gelbwaks, C. Snyder, D. Noble, G. Mattraw, B. Aldous, P. Whitton, B. Willard, A. Hendricks. .V. Soccer — Girls Season Record 6-2-1 This was the first year of soccer for every member of this year’s squad and they worked very hard to ac- complish their goals. 18 8 VNlX BOYS SOCCER 1st Row: F. Roy, D. Snyder, S. Wentzel, W. Snyder, D. GElbwaks, F. Davis, B. Law, F Royce, M. Tyo, M. Brown, S. Morrill, J. Peters, F. Morrill. 2nd Row: R. Scott, M. VanHouse, M. McRobbie, D. Gonyea, T. Tyo, B. Chilton, H. Snyder, J. Clary, A. Spadacinni, D. Jenn- ings, B. Denesha, D. Hendricks, F. Souza. As hindsight is always 20 20, it seems more useful to look ahead than to look back when it comes to soccer. A competitive squad can be expected next year despite the number of graduations because the young men who will comprise that squad have a strength of character that did not show up in the scorebook. The measure of that character was their willingness to play hard from whistle to whistle, even when badly behind, and the persistence that kept them coming out every day even after the weather got cold and our hopes for the playoffs had faded. One must play the game of soccer perhaps a hundred times before he truly understands it. If the youngsters now learning the game in grade school continue to be encouraged, looking back over soccer season will become a most gratifying pastime. VARSITY VOLLEYBALL Mtmon i bf rwft i i Drmi’f )( ft oft I Mr non i Vmon (I 1st Row: Manager — S. Denesha, J. Yerdon, F. Ramos, D. Dusharm, Manager — T. Edwards. 2nd Row: J. Coller, M. Thornton, C. Bryant, T. Thornton, H. Aldous, Coach — Miss Mattraw. This year’s team enjoyed another undefeated season, with a 10-0 record. The key to this year’s success was teamwork, dedication and togetherness. JV VOLLEYBALL 1st Row: Stats: L. Carpenter, T, Newcombe, Co- Captain J. Fenlong, Co-Captain J. Coller, B. Willard, S. Jordan, J. Parshley, Stats — D. Fifield. 2nd Row: Coach Mr. Ostrander, C. This year’s team had eight experienced players and one new freshman compete throughout the season for the six starting positions. This competition kept the girls working hard at practice and enabled them to improve enough over the season to become co- champions of Division II West with a 6-2 win-loss record. The team was 9-2 overall. Important match wins during the year came against Watertown High School and Morristown, in the last game, which enabled the Demons to tie for the cham- pionship. Jill Coller was the most consistent server making good serves 88.3% of the time. 20 Wrestling Varsity Wrestling: 1st Row: J. Duck, H. Snyder, D. Brown, D. Stiles, A. Brown, M. Brown. 2nd Row: B. Law, J. Sanderson, P. Law, B. Shatraw, M. McRobbie, C. Tracy, M. Baker, C. Flight. The wrestling squad had another successful season this year. Each of the three teams performed well and had many individual champions. Noteworthy team accomplishments were: winning of the Divisional J.V. title for the third straight year: winning of the Division B Championships for the second straight year; and a second place finish at the Essex Classic. Individual Division champions were Matt Brown, Avery Brown, Duff Stiles, Dan Brown, Jim Whitton, Bob Law, and Phil Law. J.V. Wrestling: 1st Row: F. Hewlett, D. Brown, M. Hamilton, P. Mahoney, J. They were victorious against teams that were more experienced and physically bigger. The success of this team was due to hard work during practices and tenacious defense. In coming years, these girls should form the nucleus of a good varsity ball club. 22 Boy’s Varsity Basketball 1st Row: F. Morrill, D. Gelbwaks, T. Tyo, M. Livingston, B. Davis, A. Spadaccini. 2nd Row: P. Amaral, M. Lowery, R. Sanderson, B. Chilton, M. Tyo, J. Clary, A. Plaisted, Mr. Scott. The gentlemen that played on this team were a pleasure to work with this year. We were inexperienced and less talented than some, but none had more desire to learn or spirit to withstand the pressures of a losing season. We were picked to finish last in the North Country, but we didn’t! Highlights of the season were our victories over Russell, and the impressive inprovement of everyone on our team. Boy’s J.V. I found it strange my first days here, because I didn’t see any buildings or hear car horns all the time. The first time I saw snow was a special experience for me, because in Brazil it is very hot, it never snows! I live with the Bryant family, Patricia Bryant, Christie, Carrie and Rick. I could not have a better family. I have good time in school, because I know my teachers and friends! You always help me when I need it; thank’s a lot. I am very grateful! 4 I I STAMPING TIHA '61 Chorus 1,2 National Honor Society 2. 3,4 Drama Club 1 French Club 3, 4 French Club President 4 FFA 2. 3 FFA Treasurer 2 J.V. This experiment involves everyone at H.D.C.S., but we are not the on- ly people included in this program. I’m referring to the public educational system. This great country began the marvelous idea that everyone should have the opportunity to become educated and, consequently, advance his her station in society. I can only think of one other country with a similar project — Canada. In recent years public education has been severely criticized for its failures and there are failures in the system. However, it has also had huge successes. Can you think of any organization or group of people, with a goal, who has not had failures? Many of you are taking advantage of your opportunity at H.D.C.S. I deeply regret that we have been unable to convince some of you to take full advantage of your educational program. To study and learn requires hard work and dedication. Rewards do come to those who are willing to work. Our greatest failure, in my judgement, are those students that we lose because we are unable to convince them that obtaining an education is a worthwhile objective. I would urge each one of you to work a little harder, study, seek help when you don't understand, and remember that there is a “pay off” ahead of you. You will benefit greatly! Thank you Mrs. Peters and all yearbook staff members for your dedication and hard work in producing this fine book. WRITERS John F. Sandwick Superintendent 6 J. Doiron, K. Carpenter, S. Amo, E.
