Text from Pages 1 - 82 of the 1981 volume:

To be needed in other Human lives is there anything greater or more beautiful in this world” David Grayson The 1981 Demon” staff would like to dedicate this year’s book to a very special person, one who has helped preserve those unforgettable memories of our years at H.D. Mrs. Peters, thank you so much for your time, patience and determination. We couldn’t have done it without you. 2 HIGH SCHOOL FACULTY Sitting: Ms. Mattraw, Ms. Kelley. Mrs. Wilson. Mrs. Peters. Mrs. Peggs. Mr. Sandwick Students: My brief message this year deals with the future editions of your yearbook. You have all heard the word infla- tion and many of you have discussed this problem in class. Have you considered the fact that inflation could easily pre- vent the publication of your yearbook? Costs for having a yearbook printer! continue to escalate. Revenues for meeting these increasing costs are extremely difficult to obtain. Businesses are very reluctant to pay five or ten dollars more for an ad. Constantly increasing the price of a yearbook in order to meet costs, could result in a prohibitive charge and result in few sales. Publishing companies are in the business to make money and they charge an amount so they can make money, regardless of the number of books ordered. Fewer books ordered does not necessarily lower the total cost. I am not saying that this is the last yearbook. It can, and should, survive, but it will need the support of everyone. Some school organizations did help financially this year and they are to be complimented and thanked for this assistance. I foresee a future in which everyone will have to help, if the yearbook is to continue. Mrs. Peters and the Yearbook staff have developed another great success and we all appreciate their hard work. The regular season, ended with a 7-1 win loss record, which qualified them for the section 10 playoffs. Over the last 3 weeks of the season, the team faced the constant pressure of knowing any loss would mean elimination from the playoffs. The team per- formed admirably and can be proud of the 5 straight victories they put together to qualify for the section 10 finals. j. 18 — ------ BOYS’ SOCCER 1st Row: W. Snyder, J. Peters, E. The 1980 boys’ soccer season cannot be characterized as a successful one when the records are looked at. However, most of the players had a very good attitude throughout the season and kept their determination strong when many games the score was against them. If the returning 19 players take with them the experiences that they gained and can exhibit the qualities proven this past year, the 1981 season should show an improvement in the sports program. 19 1st Row: M. Girls Varsity Volleyball Division II West Champions — Undefeated Our belief at the beginning of a doubtful undertaking is the one thing that insures the successful outcome of our venture. JV VOLLEYBALL The 1980 |V Volleyball team, finishing in second place, posted a highly successful 10-2 record in league play. The team displayed outstanding abilities despite the fact that 8 members of the 12 girl squad had never played Volleyball before. The key to the winning team was the ability to serve. Next year's team promises to be more experienced and to portray the same qualities that made this year a winning season WRESTLING The Hermon-DeKalb wrestlers had a very good year. The Varsity and Junior Varsity became the division champions, this being the second year in a row for the J.V. Wrestlers. The Junior High wrestlers did very well also, and it is hoped that their continued good performance will convince more of our students that they also can become champions. Many team members made the First team All Northern Athletic Conference and won Divisions Championships. They have worked hard to become the champions they are. 1st Row: M. Fenlong — Manager, W. GIRLS’ VARSITY BASKETBALL “Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed.” GIRLS’ JV BASKETBALL The Girls’ J.V. Basketball team has worked very hard this year and they haven't given up in any game or practice. We are expecting an even more successful season for next year now that they have some playing experience. This team is characterized by determination, willingness to learn and good sportsmanship. 1st Row: B. Barr, D. Amo, B. Bacon, B. Aldous. 2nd Row: Coach Mattraw, 1 Cook, T. Newcombe, M. Morrill, T. Tyo, R. New- combe, T. Tyo, S. Premo, Don Weeks, Coach. The Boys’ Varsity Basketball team was not very successful this year, but the unfail- ing team spirit and determination carried us through the season with an insatiable desire to win. It is hoped that next year the improved skills of the remaining players will bring them to a victorious season. BOYS’ JV BASKETBALL The Junior Varsity Boys’ Basketball team hasn’t won many games this season, but their determination was always there. The team has gained valuable expe- rience that will improve their future basketball sea- sons at Hermon-DeKalb. ny Amo, Coach; M. Hayes, S. Morrill, D. Brabaw, J. Peters, D. Jennings, B. Cheerleaders work very hard, only they know how much. Creation and determination work side by side as keeping up school spirit and team spirit is a job in itself. Coder. 25 RIFLE TEAM RIFLE CLUB The rifle club has lost quite a few of its members this past year, and will be losing even more with the graduation of five seniors. We have acquired new and better equipment, yet there is a general lack of interest in this unique sport. We hope that our present mem- bers will generate interest within the student body. Volunteers for firing squad targets sign up in the rifle range. 1st Row: H. Tracy, R. Reed, K. Gonyea, B. Bacon, A. Bigelow. 2nd Row: R. Anderson, C. Tracy, ( Lewis, K. Bulsiewicz, M. Although the rifle team’s match results were not favorable, the individual scores showed marked improvement this season. We had a successful year in that there was a spirit and determination to excel in this sport and we had an enjoyable time throughout. 26 MMMRf 27 30 This Page Was Sponsored by the Drama Club Class Officers Juniors Kneeling: D.
