' . . , , . , . , . 1 When the curtaln rose on the 1947 football scene thlrty one boys and the1r new coach Howard Swann were seen 1n the Cardmal huddle Among the group were SIX 1946 lettermen Jake Smlth Dub Wrlght Bobby Roem1sch Dale Stuard Ham Lew1s and bolster1ng these re turnlng lettermen were some flfteen hopefuls from the Hermlelgh ranks and ten husky recrults football green but w1ll1ng frorn Pyron Dub Wr1ght and Bobby Roemlsch were elected capta1n and co Capt a1n of the squad and John Young manager By the tune for the f1rst game wh1ch was wlth the Hlghland Hornets Coach had h1s boys looklng mlghty good Plenty good enough to defeat the Hornets by a score of 21 O Th1s f1rst game of the season was really a h1ghl1ght for Hermlelgh football fans for lt 1naugurated the newly llghted football f1e1d The Card1nals really brought the cheers as they trotted on the f1eld 1n the1r new red and wh1te un1forms The pep squad also bedecked 1n new and colorful attlre looked beautlful and the1r f1rst performance was superb Yes the Cardlnals were off to a glorlous season On Oct 3rd the Ira Bulldogs 1nvaded the Card1na1gr1d1ron but the1r newly organlzed football eleven was no match for the charglng Cardmals who eas11y rolled over them Z5 to 0 The next Cardlnal v1ct1m was Wyl1e Thls was the f1rst game away from home The Wyl1e Bulldogs proved to be worthy opponents but they could not comb1ne the1r breaks and ab111ty 1n suff1c1ent strength to down the dauntless boys from Hermlelgh The score board read Hermle1gh 13 Wyl1e 6 Back on the home f1eld on the nlght of Oct 17th the Cardlnals battled the troublesome Trent to a 7 O vlctory Away down the 11ne went the Herm1e1gh boys w1th the Pep Squad support to defeat Tuscola 6 0 And then came Clyde The mlghty stampedlng Clyde Bulldogs The game was on the Card1nal fleld The crowd was there The game was on The breaks were bad for the home town boys and for the f1rst and only t1me 1n the 1947 season the Hermle1gh Card1na1s had to report themselves on the low end of the score 13 0 The games wh1ch followed the Clyde clash were as an ant1 cllmax to the football season Good games but w1thout the color and ant1c1 patlon of the Clyde contest The D1v1de Trojans were down Z1 O The Hobbs Panthers trymg hard fell 13 to 0 the only game 1n wh1ch they d1d not score And last 1n the mud and cold the Card1na1s out played the Stanton Buffalos but 6 to 6 was the f1na1 score ,I ' ' , .. 9 y . 4 - I . . .
