CLA S HISTDRY JUST A THINKING Dear Shrrley Remember that f1rst day when we entered the mysterrous realms of l-lerrngton Hlgh School? What a bewtldered bunch of green youngsters we were Taklng all the razzrn of the upperclassmen 1n our strrde but shyly we elected L C Honey cutt Prestdent Catherme Doyle V1ce Presrdent Leo Weber Secretary and Treasurer Bob Ellrott Drck Schnerder Hrstorran and Elaxne Trede Dorothy Zrener Cheerleaders Our sponsors were Mrss Burnett Mrss Hobbs, and Mr Burrows Our f1rst semester class prcnrc was held at the Herrngton Lake the latter part of September Although some of us came home a trrfle wet we all enjoyed ourselves The Rotary Club gave a prcmc for the freshmen boys whrch was held at the Herrngton Lake every boy had a grown up sponsor who escorted them The freshman attendant to the queen was Wrlma Rrchmond Twrla Wendt and Donna Sauer were the two freshman grrl delegates to the Y Teen conference at Cottonwood Falls Donna Sauer and myslef vrsrted out of town schools on v1s1t1ng day A large part ofthe hlgh school band was made up of a large portxon of freshmen I9 rn all Srxteen partrcrpated 1n vocal musrc The 1948 football team was supported by seven delegates from the freshman class Three were out for basketball and srx were out for baseball Second semester socral event was a prcnrc at Lake Herrngton Curtrs Beames enrolled rn January of 1949 and I-lelmer Jung hans Bernrce Brunner dropped out rn February As sophomores we elected Drck Schnerder Presrdent Paul Utech Vrce Presrdent Bob Ellrott Secretary and Treasurer Geraldrne Baker Hrstorran and Twrla Wendt Cheerleader Our sponsors were Mrss Brshop Mrs Frost and Mr Penner The f1rst semester party was a sock hop ln the gym Prrzes were grven to Donna Sauer and Hrram Harmon for the best decorated socks Frfteen took part rn football that year Leo Weber was on the A team rn basketball and Wayne Wrseman and RODHIC Baker were on the B team Three took part rn baseball Nmeteen took part rn band The football attendant to the queen was Marllyn Kendall and the second semester party was a hayrack rrde Those who dropped out durrng the year were Wrlma Rrchmond Gall McIntyre LeRoy Longhofer and Lou1s Engle To lead us to our drgnrfred places asjunrors we elected Bob Elirott Presrdent Drck Schnerder V1ce Presrdent L C Honey Cult Secretary Don Hayes Treasurer and Denms Brsby Hrstorran Many thanks to our sponsors that year Mrs Haun and Mr Bell for all the trme and help they gave to the class Our socral event for the f1rst semester was a dance rn the band room Remember? There were rune out for football and three on the A team rn basketball There were twenty two rn band Donna Bushey was attendant to the football queen A rrng C0mmltIC6 was chosen and our class rtngs selected The trme had come at last for our class to perform for the benefrt of all Iunror Play trme The curtarn went up at Paul Utech was elected to attend Boys State at Wrchrta and myself to attend Grrls State at Lawrence And soon came the trme we were all wartmg for Banquet Trme The offrcers met wrth the sponsors and selected our theme Moonlrght OnHawa11 All members of our class then went to work on the gym and before long II was changed 1nto a paradrse of blue and green streamers landscape and palm trees The tables were set and frnally the brg mght arrrved Our class showed plenty ofcompetrtron to the senror class that nrght but we all remamed frrends Those we lost during the year were Clarrce Schnerder Catherme Doyle Charles Wrll and Clovrs Smrth We galned Shrrley Murray and Donald Starr By the trme we became semors we were gettmg somewhat a1r mrnded At least that rs what the other classes thought about us Sometrmes when we assumed that bragadoccro a1r we drdn t feel that way It was Just a cover up because we were a llttle sad sometlmes that we would soon be leavlng hrgh school Jo McKee was elected to ftll the offrce of Presldent Denms Blsby Vrce Presrdent Jerry Rrttell Secretary Charles Krueger Treasurer Geraldtne Baker, Hrstorran Our sponsors were Mrss Melander and Mr Bell and Mr Butterfleld There were ten who played football Tw1la Wendt was football queen and her attendant was Donna Bushey The f1rst semester party was decoratmg the halls and tree for Chrtstmas Everyone emoyed the mrstletoe rncludrng the teachers that were present Srx semors played basketball Clarre Hyde was basketball queen and her attendants wereCatherrne Doyle and Donna Sauer The football basketball and baseball games are all memorres now but we ll always remember the thrrll that came when our boys won and a game and the heartbreaks we felt when they lost Our lrttle yunror frrends fell herr to arrangrng for the Junror Semor Banquet We truly thank them for grvrng us such a lovely one Early one mornrng we boarded a Rock Island tram for Kansas Crty lt was Skrp Day the day we had warted for stnce we were freshmen A good trme was spent that day and another memory added We arrrved home trred but happy At home agarn we remembered we had our second semester assembly to prepare our class day program Who the Valedtctorlan and Salutatonan are wrll not be known untrl that day Your guess rs as good as mrne as to who wrll recerve the Amerrcan Legron Awards but we know rt w1ll be someone who deserves rt and we wrll allbe very happy and proud of them Those we lost durrng the year were Ann Walker Peak Bonnre Zrebell Stneber Wrnona l-l1ldermanChr1s1ohn Shxrley Koepsel Dorothy Zrener Jones Those we galned were Clarre Hyde Ann Walker and Catherme Doyle And that mght of nrghts arrrved and the curtarn descended on frfty two eager senror students gorng that frnal march down the arsle to recetve therr drplomas tears but ll was over but not really over forwe had lustre cerved our passports for the begmnrng of a new lrfe Your frrend, Geraldrne Baker 8:00 p. m. on the eve of December 1, 1951, with The Clock Struck Twelve and rang down at 10:00 p. m. A great hit.
