L V lrfyf byquickly, so quickly that it seemed almost incredible. Many things had changed. The buildings, the instructors, i'-, Q the administration, even the students were somehow dif- ferentg and yet there were some familiar places and faces. Mr. Horton laughed just as spontaneously as everg ten years had passed and seemed to have done little to change his spirit. Mrs. Batts certainly had remained as friendly and likeable as always. Mrs. Kaufmann and Mr. Dees had changed only chronologically. Yes, he had enjoyed his visit. But it did seem strange merely to be a spectator on the sidelines. And yet, if he could not participate very' he could at least relive. He saw an interesting and crowd, and high traditional spiritg he cheered for g Q in an exciting football game 3 he witnessed e Cannon, crowned in an impressive ceremony a good dance. That was the summary in the '75 Blackcat Yearbook. And what a trip it was! The team placed third in the State Cross Country Meet on the Au- gustin Golf Course in Columbia. In a field of 24-O runners, the Blackcats were led by 12th place Bud McMil1in, 17th place Brian Stotler, 31st Roger Gray, 33rd Derrick Miller, 76th Tom Doyle, with pusher Bill Guidicy close behind. After the individual placers were pulled, the Blackcats totaled 105 points--low enough for the third place trophy. The Varsity season was also highlighted with a 1st place finish in the District meet and Cape Invitational. They placed 2nd in the St. Charles Invitational and 3rd in the Hancock Invitational. The Blackcats also ran their home meet winning streak to 3 years on their new two and one half mile course at the Joachim Golf Course. The Freshman and Sophomore classes also enjoyed success- ful seasons, The Freshman almost made it a perfect season winning the Northwest Invitational, Prep North Invitational, and third in the Lindberg Invitational. The junior Varsity also had their share of victory, winning the St. Louis District Invitational and setting a record low 24 points in winning the Cape Invitational. Under the direction of Mr. Bill Stotler, the 1975-76 Blackcats comprised a very impressive, and successful season, which seems to have inspired the basketball fans around Herculaneum High School. Six very talented seniors, and five dedicated juniors would develop into a team that would take both the conference and regionalrchampionships, and would be victorious in 23 of those 28 contests. On November 24, the 'blackcats showed the county a preview of the coming events by defeating Leadwood, decisively, 85-71, in the season's opener. The Hillsboro Invitational was next, and after two impressive victories, the Cats found themselves in the finals, facing their year-long rivals, the Hillsboro Hawks. The evenly matched teams battled for 32 minutes of play, to a 73-71 decision, that favored Hillsboro. December was good to the Blackcats, as victory after victory, proved the Cats to be a superior contendor. Such was the December 12 game, when the Blackcatsievened it up with the Hawks, beating them in the first conference game of the season, by a wide margin, 73-52. As 1976 rolled around, the Cats prepared themselves for their second trip to the Jeffco Classic. Through determined and inspirational play, the Cats were victorious in the first two frames of the tournament, but finals, again brought on a rematch with the Hawks. After a furious and hard fought battle, the Cats accepted a frustrating second place trophy. . . 55-52. ' Following a damaging conference loss to Northwest, 63-68, the Cats mounted a ten game win streak, which included victories over St. Pius, Crystal City, Windsor, DeSoto, and Festus, to keep the Cats in a tie for the conference title. For the second consecutive year, I-lerky entered the Festus Invitational tournament, and came away with the championship trophy,-1The final game of the tournament could not have befenlimore exciting if it had come from the pen of Clair?Bee. With only two seconds remaining to be played,31grQlQfSfq5j,Pius had a one point lead and the ball out of It seemed hopeless for the Cats, but the game yet! The inbounds pass was intercepted byQfa,'.Blackcat and shoveled toward the basket into the of No. 42, who went up for the shot as theghorn sounded. The referee signaled that the shot emerged with a 64- 63 title victory. On Friday, February 13, the Fox Warriors dared cross the path of the teams invisioning title dreams and having only one loss, Herky inflicted a 70-66 defeat on the?5Warriors and insured them- selves a share of the League Championship. . . A During the 1975-76 season I-Ierky encountered some powerful nonconference foes, including Eureka, Clayton, DeAndreis, and Flat River Central. , g -g Central proved to be the toughest. The Rebs posted a final 29-1 win-loss record and finished 3rd state tourney. They were to entertain the Catslon February 20 in what was to be a test of the areas 3AI and also serve as a tune up for the next weelfdsiiregional tournaments. The match proved to be all as the Rebs shot down the Blackcats 93 -79,wi'thja ,blistering 68M shooting effort from the floor. V, There were some gains made on February 20 asiFestus was able to upset Northwest in their conferencefinatdlif and allow the Cats to retain sole possession of first place in the conference with a nifty 7-1 recordrzgff rpirlfgg ff ir'. I fg The stage was now set for the upcoming regional tournament, in which the Cats were seeded first. In the opening round, the Stotlermen had little trouble with Perryville, defeating them 73-54, and handled the problems with Festus, in the Semifinal match, sending them to defeat 53-40. Herky now had only one obstical between it, and a regional championship, the l-lillsboro Hawks. It was a nip and tuck game from the beginning in which the outcome was favorable, Hillsboro got the second place trophy and the Cats ad- vanced into State play. The first round saw the Blackcats facing Luthern South, a strong mature team that was rated number one in the St. Louis area. Disaster struck, 'asthe Cats were defeated in a frustrating game, throughout which they had held the lead, until the last deciding minutes. A 63-55 loss closed the door on a very successful and impressive season for the eleven dedicated, talented and inspired 1975-76 Herculaneum Blackcat Basketball Squad. 1976 Track Varsity Track -- ROW 1: H. No matter what the weather may be or how busy they may be with other things, there are those fans who religiously come to practically every athletic event our school is involved in. They will travel as far as St. Clair or Eureka, Flat River and Farmington without even as much thought of the distance as the blink of an eye. V There is a deep, sincere feeling of pride that goes with these people and it reflects back onhthe teams and school as a whole. There is a comradary that develops between these fans and the athletes. They get to know each other even if it be without meeting. ' Whether the fans realize it or not, the players re ally appreciate this support that is given to them. It's a very good feeling to -walk out and see and hear those people clapping and cheering for you, knowing that they are on your side. Without the fans there would be no Blackcats, because every fan is, in a sense, a member of the Black- cat team, participating in his own way toward the shared goal, to win. So we thank you, very sincerely, for being the kind of fantastic followers that each and every one of you are. HILDA KAUFMANN X l X ,J f Publicationis Class Shows Appreciation To Mrs. Hilda Kaufmann We, the Publications Class of 1976, would like to pay a special thanks to our adviser, Mrs. Hilda Kaufmann. She has put in endless hours of hard work, lots of money, and patience when it came to working with everyone in the class. Without her, this yearbook would not have been a success and neither would the Senior High or the jr. High papers. During the course of the year, we worked hard but still had a good time. She valued each one of us as individuals and we respected her. Publications is a class none of us will ever for- get. There are so many new things to learn that you never lose interest in making each thing better than the last. Selling ads, yearbooks, lay- ing out the paper, running it off, and finishing up the yearbook, are just some of the things that were done throughout the year. The birthday parties, the dinners out, and every- day in class, brought us closer together as a class. You have helped us in all these things, Mrs. Kaufmann, and we all thank you very much. 50th Anniversar 4824 4776 Qzmzad .Waxes C N cf S ' ,Q K2 .L-,M.i.:::.x'V 'Ilf- -,:- ..r ::.
