They spend .part of their time studying parts of speech, writing themes, reading books, and giving book reports. 14 nwnnimfnrs Ellgli h Miss Lemen has five divisions of English, in- cluding her iournalism class. Her classes include only juniors and seniors, of which forty are seniors and eighty-one are juniors. The English classes have divided their time between grammar and literature . The iournalism class does the maiority of. the work on the school paper, The Black Cat Tales, along with the Publications Committee . This class also does speech work. Mr. Martin has five divisions of English which are made up of sophomore and freshman groups. He has one -hundred forty-four students in his classes. His classes spend a lot of their time on grammar and literature, which builds the students for senior English work. Speech is alsostressed in these classes . Lui

lJfPHllllllElllS ocial tudie ROY E. TAYLOR, Superintendent of Her- culaneum High School and the present American Problems teacher, has an enrollment of 35 pupils in class. He has been superintendent fora period of 27 years. When he was asked what he stressed especially in his classes Mr. Taylor said, l seek to achieve better understanding of problems concerning government and business. I hope to arouse a deeper interest in participating in affairs common to the average man. This also stresses a democratic way of life and attempts to moti- vate every pupil to apply the principles of de- mocracy in meeting the many problems asso- ciated with living. EMERY CHANDLER can be seen as either a world history or American history leader any hour ofa normal school day with the exception of fifth period. Mr. Chandler, who graduated from Southern Illinois University, has had seven years of teach- ing experience. He stresses knowledge of both ancient and medieval history. There are a total of l75 students in his classes. ...Z ,1 RICHARD CARTER, the government teacher, came to Herculaneum High for his first year of teaching. He is a graduate of Washington Univer- sity, St. Louis, Missouri. Mr. Carter states, ln my government class I hope to help the students in better preparation for the democratic way of living . -I 1' T llr 'if i T :fb The chorus class has eighty-seven members. It meets the Fifth and sixth hours every other day, alternating between boys and girlsg and on Friday, the mixed chorus meets. The choir also goes to Cape Girardeau in the Spring, under the direction of Mr. Scott, to compete in the music concert. They are working hard to merit a high rating in the concert. Musicl Musicl Musicl That's what you hear when you pass the music room. The band is practicing very hard for the coming Music Fes- tival and Concert at Cape Girardeau . The band consists of fifty members. The leader of the band is Mr. Scott, who says, The 1 UEPHHTMEH Mu ic TSI ' Y' X A ISN 5 4 band keeps showing improvement. Let's hope they continue to do so. Herculaneum is certain to have one of the best bands this year. Everyone feels that the band will re- ceive an excellent rating at the contest in the spring . I , Mr. Bess has been at Herculaneum High school for the past three years. This year he teaches general mathematics, algebra, and ge- ometry. Under his guidance, Mr. Bess has de- veloped the ability of T25 students in the Fieldof mathematics. Much general knowledge is needed in the field of mathematics to live a Full and rich life. We find that our Mathematics Depart- ment is capable of doing this. Besides doing the work as principal of our school, Mr. Gray also teaches mathematics and sychology.
