Public education in Glendale began 100 years ago with 11 students in a 1 room school house. As Hoover celebrates its 50th anniversary, there comes a time to reflect on just how far the community has progressed. Glendale was founded during the mining days and government in- corporated in 1906. Since then, Glendale has thrived grown through floods, fires, earthquakes energy shortages. Wealthy families, such as the Brands, Harts, Goodes, have contributed to the prosperity of Glendale. Some buildings and certain areas have become landmarks popular spots for Glendale citizens. Hoover has helped popularize these land- marks, which are famous now in their own right. Had it not been for the pioneers and the contributions of the early families, the Hoover family would not have such a superb community in which to live! In Dedication to Ruth Carruth .. . Retired June, 1978 Whose love of literature and enthusiasm for teaching gave her the ability to inspire students to do better when they felt they could not. She stressed the importance of cjuestioning not only words and liter- ature, but also life and living. She took a special interest in each of us and saw each one of us as an individual. Her thorough knowledge and constant research gave her superior standards by which to teach. She knew each one of the great authors, almost personally, by her sensitive perception of his works and her own scholarly intellect. Surely Hoover High School will never be able to replace her, nor shall we ever forget the contributions which she so unselfishly gave to us in her many years of teaching.- -Frank Nolan SENIOR DEDICATION 59 Around campus this year we saw a variety of attire. Some dressed very fashion- ably, some quite bizarre!! and then there were those who settled for the cas- ual look . Hoover also saw a change in footwear. Jelly beans and spike heels were seen stomping all over school; needless to say it was a far cry from saddle shoes and oxfords. A touch of nostalgia, mixed with the foreign and new, also took part in Hoover's fashion this year. Bow ties, Chemin de Fer and charm holders were some of the items that girls found indispensable in their ward- robes. 62 US The US section tries to capture what happened in your whole world during 78 79. The birth of the first test-tube baby, Louise Brown, in England, opened new doors to the future gave hope to thousands of childless couples. As our attitudes became more open, so did our music. Now new Wave or Punk rock has arrived. It is an energetic, spontaneous and original sound format. The lyrics themselves most often deal with views of so- ciety and life in general and are performed in an aggressive manner, performers literally screaming the lyrics. Punk Rock dress is bizarre- imagine safety pins through noses, short straight hair and painted faces, etc... 68 US What's in Hoover's Future Are there going to he many various changes in Hoover's fu- ture? It seems that Hoover is headed for changes brought about by several major issues. Will there be integration within Hoover's walls? Eventually, the minorities will outnumber the majority. Will the females get their opportunity to participate in all school activities, such as con- sports, boys' clubs compete equally for major offices? Perhaps the dress code will he revised; not radically, like styles do, but maybe students will be able to go barefooted to school. What if smoking were to be allowed on campus as well; during lunch, in class, during passing periods? Will School Street be done away with, or enlarged? And theistudent government at Hoover, alias Cabinet; will it be- ome more powerful, or will the advisors administration totally do away with the students' voice? Global problems will have an effect as well; will the United States become a second rate power, feared by few afraid to act against any aggression by the Soviet Union? How about soaring gasoline rates? Will students go back to the good old days of walk- ing two miles through blinding snow to get to schoo' they ride in car pools, on buses, rollerskates, bikes or h Will the population increase, will schools become will the Hoover cafeteria change to an all liquid diet? What if the dollar is shunned by other countries gold or Swiss francs are used instead? Could one conceive of paying for a candy bar with a basketful of dollars? Everything that happens in the world influences Hoover's envi- ronment. In the future, the people of this school will have to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances, so that they can act with intelligency, compassion foresight as the new leaders of Amer- ica. Their entrance was devastating, complete with pom-pons, clapping, stomping, and screaming to the music of Fire On High . When the curtain rose, the auditorium was flooded by the brilliantly lit 79 sign, surrounded by swirl- ing fog. It was obvious that the seniors had dominated BCD. Senior BGD 72 ACTIVITIES Our Overall BGD This year our traditional Beat Glendale Day showed more enthusiasm and school spirit than ever before. BGD has been the spirit-raiser for vic- tory for over 20 years. Parades, signs, rallies, and a fantastic assembly were the highlight of our day. Junior BGD Revenge of The Pink Panther the Junior BGD Theme has been one of the most original ideas presented in BGD Com- petition, and will be long remembered among the class of 1980. The Juniors received trophies for both their pool wall sign and creative speech. They'll most definitely be the class to reckon with next year. 74 ACTIVITIES The Sophomore BCD Theme You ain't seen nothing yet certainly illustrated their performance during BCD Competition. The class of '81 shocked the entire student body with an out- standing skit, colorful signs which tied in with a tremendous show of spirit to top it all off!! Sophomore BGD ACTIVITIES 75 Linda Ziel, Hoover's 1978-79 Home- coming Queen, was escorted by Pat Lynch. Her princesses were Joy Rahm, escorted by Todd Jensen, Leslie Brown, escorted by Brad Nicodemus, Christine Spycopolous, escorted by Richard Janies, and Cindy Sottile, escorted by Bob Hupp. 76 ACTIVITIES ACTIVITIES 77 50's Day And Halloween Day Roaring 50’s Day-Hoovcr's Cabinet decided to wake -up the students this year by sponsoring a 50's Day, a fun way to break up the monotony of at- tending school. Students dressed up in long skirts and rolled-up sleeve T- shirts. At lunch contest were held, such as tricycle drags, goldfish swallow- ing, and last but not least, a Volkswagen-stuffing contest. The seniors took this contest easily by squishing 26 seniors into one Volkswagen bug. These games were enjoyed by all those who participated. 78 ACTIVITIES Happy Halloween Day-Since high school students look funny «rick or Ireating on Halloween, Cabinet sponsored a Happy Halloween Day. This was complete with costumes, contests, and scarey music. Many students dressed up and joined in the apple-bobbing contest and many other activi- ties. We had far more students participate this year than in other years. This was a day not to be forgotten. ACTIVITIES 79 eiose i You On the night of February 23, 1979, Elizabeth Milner was crowned Queen of the Junior Prom, as her escort, Tim Hammer happily looked on. Prin-j cesses pictured are Kelly McCune, Jill Galletly, Keely King, Donna Moore. 80 JUNIOR PROM The 1979 Junior Prom was held in the Crystal Ballroom of the Biltmore Hotel, from 8 pm to 1 am. Brent Wiesse Martha Brandon were in charge. The menu was chicken, rice, peas Boston cream pie. Music was provided by Horizon, who played such favorites as Night Fever. JUNIOR PROM 81 Now this year at Hoover is over for me. I am looking back to a great year which I'll never forget. It was such a wonderful experience to stay here and to get to know the customs of a foreign country. It is sometimes hard to get used to the habits of a foreign country but it was made easy for me by the warm reception I received from you. Hoover. I, in particular want to thank the Friensens for being a host-family for me. That I had such a wonderful time I owe to this nice family. Since the students at Hoover were very nice and helpful I got to know many new friends. I hope all of you know that if you go to Germany you have to stop at my house for a visit. Let's always keep in touch. Oliver Bunz Wilhelm-Lehmann-str. 45 2330 Eckermforde West Germany My year at Hoover has been a great experience I'll never forget: the many great friends that I have gotten, the teachers help, and I have had so much fun and a great time at Hoover. Thank you to everyone. I also want to thank my host family for this year, the Whites. They have been a really good family almost as my own. I hope that I can really keep in touch and if you want to write me or come visit me in Denmark my ad- dress is: Pia Knudsen Anker Jensensveyj 45th 8230 Abyhdj Denmark 82 ACTIVITIES YFU, AFS Hi Tornadoes! First of all I would like to thank ev- eryone who has done much for me. I really had much fun at Hoover. The students and teachers are very nice. I saw many things that I would not have seen in Indonesia. Hoover has added many experi- ences into my life that I won't be able to forget easily. I am impressed of the activities at Hoover. There are many traditions here at Hoover as well as the various things that was done by the students. Football game, basket- ball games, and many other games were interesting. Although the ASB had done a good job but I want to see in the next few years an ASB that is much better. I really want to come back here if I have an opportunity. I will be very happy to answer letters to whoever wishes to write letters to me. I like writing letters. Selamat Tinggal Hoover! (Good bye Hoover!) Enough already! I’m not spending one more ... penny on this dumb costume! I'm in love with my secret sweetheart! I can't move in this uniform! I want everyone in splits in 5 minutes! It's shaping up finally! Competition this year was held at the Anaheim Sheraton on De- cember 17 18, 1978. The hotel was so far away that all through the long ride most of the girls thought they'd get there on time. When they finally managed to arrive, their rooms were not readv. They were assigned rooms after T:00 p.m. when Mrs. Sarkin used her professional persuasion and started to throw her weight around. The rooms were scattered all over the hotel, which, as you can imagine, created quite a disaster. After that, there was an exciting moment when 17 Hoover members were stuck in an ele- vator. Some quotes they blurted out were We are going to die . Oh my gosh, I can't breathe! . Their trip to Disneyland was quite wet since it rained most of the night and thev didn't get into bed until 1:00 a.m. Amazingly, no one caught pneumonia! Despite all these factors, both groups, dance and military, performed to the upmost of their ability although they did not place. The 1978 Dis- neyland competition will never to forgotten by the 25 girls who at- tended. PEP 99 Varsity Songleaders Songleading, like anything else, takes dedication, patience and lots of practice. Many people don't know what really goes on behind the scenes during the busy weeks before their first nervous, but exciting performance. Did you know that our varsity songleaders won a spirit award at camp? Everyone agrees that all the problems, fund raisers, and yelling on the field is worth it when they dazzle the Hoover audience with yet another fabulous routine! The 1979 varsity songleaders are Sue Venal, Kimberly Loomis, Laurie Pote, I ill Derris, Lori Magnus (head) and Joanne Vitale. 100 PEP Varsity Short Flags For the second year in a row, the short flag girls have twirled their way into Hoover spirit. Our volleyball season proved this statement to be true once again. During this past season no assistant coaches were available and the management of all three teams relied solely on Miss Carol Chaney. One of our main weaknesses this year was the lack of teamwork, on court they did not work together as a team. Maybe if I had more time to work with each individual team we might have developed a better strategy from the beginning. S-M7 FRIENDS 239 ?N a POWERS, D.D.S. • THE WHITE HOUSE WA S MINOT© March 3, 1930 I an deeply gratified that yo’ir school should bear my name, and I do pray that it may ever faithfully serve those who enter it3 doors in search of truth. February 2. 1979 TO Till STUDENTS Of HERBERT HOOVER HIGH SCHOOL: I believe lh.il my Grandfather's thoughts about “The Uncommon Man ay as appropriate today as they were when written thirty years ago-see if yoi don't agree. I HI UNCOMMON MAN In my opinion, there has been too much talk about the Common Man. It has been dinned into us that this is the Century of the Common Man. The idea seems to be that the Common Man has come into his own at last. Thus we are in danger of developing a cult of the Common Man, which means a ult of mediocrity. But there is at least one hope tul sign: I have never been able to find out who this Common Man is In fact, most Americans, and especially women, will get mad and tight it you try calling them common. This is hopeful because it shows that most people are holding last to an essential fact in American life. We believe in equal op- portunitv for all, but we know that this includes the opportunity to rise to leadership—in other words, to be uncommon. Let us remember that the great human advances have not been Itrought about by mediocre men and women. They were brought about by distinctly uncommon people with vital sparks of leadership. Many of the great leaders were, it is true, of humble origin, but that alone was not their greatness. It is a curious fact that when you get sick you want an uncom- mon doc tor; if your car breaks down you want an uncommonly good me hanic; when we get into war we want dreadfully an un- common admiral and an uncommon general. I have never met a father and mother who did not want their children to grow up to be uncommon men and women. May it always be so. For the future of America rests not in mediocrity txit in the constant renewal of leadership in every phase of our national life. - HERBERT HOOVER February 6, 1949 With this theme in mind. I hope that your school will Continue to be . source of uncommon men and women for the next fifty years. . Sincerely, | HERBERT HOOVER III Los Angeles 212o? eAST prOVIDENCIA Ayp BURBANK.
