Dedication Following the tradition set in many previous years, the 1960 Scroll is dedicated to the veteran teachers who will not be re- turning to Hoover in September. The first two teachers are retir ing after this year; the third is transferring to the new Crescenta Valley High. Miss Laura E. Johnston, one of our retiring teachers, received her Junior High teaching credential from San Jose State College and her Bachelor of Science degree with majors in Nutrition, Chemistry, and Psychology from Oregon State College. After teaching for three years at Lodi Junior High. Lodi, California, Miss Johnston came to Hoover in 1929, when the school was opened. She became head of the Home Economics department at Hoover in September, 1954. Her plans for retirement are not definite yet. Another retiring teacher is Mr. William Ray Schirmer, who at- tended Denver University and U.C.L.A. before receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree from U.S.C. in 1926. He began teaching in the Business Education department at Glendale High in 1929 and continued there for four years until his transfer to the same department at Hoover. Mr. Schirmer has been head of the Busi- ness Education department at Hoover since September, 1942. A practice of lav on a leisurely basis is his plan for retirement. The teacher who is being transferred to Crescenta Valley High is Mr. Fred C. Wilson. An alumnus of Glendale High School, Mr. Wilson attended several colleges, including U.C.L.A., Santa Barbara State College, and Colorado Agricultural College. He served in World War I and was an Air Force Captain in World War II. Before coming to Hoover in 1929, he taught Auto Shop one year at Glendale High which v as preceded by two years teaching of Vocational Auto Shop in Long Beach. Summer usu- ally finds Mr. Wilson as Ferryboat skipper at Balboa. The best wishes of the Student Body and Faculty are extended to these teachers and also to Mr. Karbe, who will be leaving Hoover to become Principal of La Crescenta's new Rosemont Junior High.
