Oaks that flourish for a thousand years do not spring up into beauty like a reed. —George lleury Lewes With this Scroll may the year of 1960 be kept a memory forever. Just as the roots support a tree through its ageless years, so do the three years spent at Hoover sup- port a foundation for the knowledge that we will use throughout our lives. Quietly over the years, the roots of a tree grow deeper into the earth, while its branches reach to- ward the sky. As our tree grows and develops, it symolizes the Thirty Years of Growth in Hoover's history. The years pass, and class after class graduates. Moving into the distant reaches of the world far from the root of their education, they spread the ideals, standards, and values of Hoover the tree extend- ing its branches. Growth is gradual and invisible to us at the mo ment. Only in reflection do the many years form a visible picture of Thirty Years of Growth. The first two teachers are retir ing after this year; the third is transferring to the new Crescenta Valley High. Miss Laura E. Johnston, one of our retiring teachers, received her Junior High teaching credential from San Jose State College and her Bachelor of Science degree with majors in Nutrition, Chemistry, and Psychology from Oregon State College. After teaching for three years at Lodi Junior High. Lodi, California, Miss Johnston came to Hoover in 1929, when the school was opened. She became head of the Home Economics department at Hoover in September, 1954. Her plans for retirement are not definite yet. Another retiring teacher is Mr. William Ray Schirmer, who at- tended Denver University and U.C.L.A. before receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree from U.S.C. in 1926. He began teaching in the Business Education department at Glendale High in 1929 and continued there for four years until his transfer to the same department at Hoover. Mr. Schirmer has been head of the Busi- ness Education department at Hoover since September, 1942. A practice of lav on a leisurely basis is his plan for retirement. The teacher who is being transferred to Crescenta Valley High is Mr. Fred C. Wilson. An alumnus of Glendale High School, Mr. Wilson attended several colleges, including U.C.L.A., Santa Barbara State College, and Colorado Agricultural College. He served in World War I and was an Air Force Captain in World War II. Before coming to Hoover in 1929, he taught Auto Shop one year at Glendale High which v as preceded by two years teaching of Vocational Auto Shop in Long Beach. Summer usu- ally finds Mr. Wilson as Ferryboat skipper at Balboa. The best wishes of the Student Body and Faculty are extended to these teachers and also to Mr. Karbe, who will be leaving Hoover to become Principal of La Crescenta's new Rosemont Junior High. ADMIN I S T R A T I O N I was most proud to present your Scroll to Kenneth Montgomery, the Deputy Superin- tendent, when he retired recently after more than 30 years of service in Glendale Schools. He joins me in congratulating all of you for successfully completing an important' phase of your education. . ft is the earnest hope of the faculty and ad- ministration . that your years at Hoover have been satisfying and rewarding ones. We offer our best wishes as you assume your duties to God and your country. William B. Murphy . . I has been an honor and a privilege lor me to serve on the administration staff these past three years. You have maintained the traditional Hoover stand- ards of excellence in academic achievement and [athletic participation. You can be proud of your school and what it represents. May the future hold a challenge and bring success and happiness to each and every one of you. i ROBERT A. KARBE Being a part of Hoover is one of the most rewarding experiences I have had. The Student Body is out- standing in spirit, cooperation, and accomplishment. The faculty is dedicated to giving all students the best educational opportunity. With this combination, Hoover's continued success is assured. Helen Ayers Pictured here are Marian Grey, Keith White, and John Usilton, Administration Officials. 11 Counselors Mrs. Miles. They us BUDA to he.p them with their work r r Student Bodi President I John McCarthy began his term as Student Body President in the tall semester of 1959 with amazing energy and capability. His slogan. Hoover on High, was certainly a boost to the spirit of the student body. He took a great interest in the problems around school and chalked up a long list of successful projects. 20 Student Bodi President I! His friendliness and fairness made him one of Hoover's greatest presidents. Barry's participation in numerous campus activities en- abled him to handle with ease the problems of his office. 21 Cabinet I Lynn Gilbert Director of Finance Allen Young Director of Beys' Athletics Cabinet, the chief governing body at Hoover, accepts challenges and new responsibilities every semester. If it were not for the great enthusiasm, co- operation, and hard work that the members of the cabinet demonstrate, we — the students of Hoover High School — would soon lose the respect now shown us by the Administration and Faculty. The students who served on the Cab- inet this year, just as those in previous years, have given many fine contribu- 22 Marly White 1 unior Representative Marta Brown Director of Activities Miriam Lorch Director of Publicity Suxi Keenan Director of Assemblies tions to life on campus. They planned our special days, and they planned and carried out many projects to im- prove our school. A joint effort of both Cabinets was the annual draft dance, A Knight to Remember. The Cabinet members also have a great deal of respect and prestige among the students. They are the choice of the student body, and this year they have shown everyone just what a working organization can do. Representative Marty White Junior Representative Legislature These hard working groups of students were our first and second semester legislature members. They acted just as our national legislature, by represent- ing the students just as our national Congress rep- resents the people. These students expressed the views and wishes of the student body and helped our school government run smoothly. 26 Inter-Club Council The Inter-Club Council, which provided an opportunity for officers of Hoover's many clubs to discuss and solve club problems, helped make our club schedules run smoothly and efficiently. Pictured are the members of the first semester Inter-Club Council. 27 Student Court I Dick Underwood Attorney General Betsy Kent Justice at Large Chris Dawson Chief Justice Sally Haugen Justice at Large Jean Crane Justice a: Largo Bruce Donatelli Senior Justice Ed Soderblom Junior Justice Peggy Fuller Sophomore 'ustice Administering justice on the first semes- ter Student Court were: Dick Underwood, Betsy Kent, Chris Dawson, Sally Haugen, Jean Crane, Bruce Donatelli, Ed Soderblom, and Peggy Fuller. These students worked conscientiously to see that justice and peace could reign within the boundaries of Herbert Hoover High School. 28 Student Court II Channing Robertson Attorney General Terri Alltizer Justice at Large- Jerry Staub Chief Justice Virginia Sanders Justice at Large Nick Bohl Sophomore Justice Julie Thompson Doug Kemps Dee Ann Warren Justice at Large Senior Justice Junior Justice Taking action against offenders, is one of the main duties of our Student Court, as the school's chief body of justice. This was carried out very efficiently by the members of our second semester Student Court: Channincj Robertson, Terri Alltizer, Jerry Staub, Virginia Sanders, Julie Thompson, Doug Kemps, Dee Ann Warren, and Nick Bohl. 29 'c Class Councils '60s really nifty, and these Senior Coun- cil members have worked hard to help preserve the slogan. On the moon or under the sun, the best there is, '61. Although not pictured, the Junior Class Council did a tremendous job for the betterment of their class Something's new with '62. These Sopho- mores have done a great job helping their class adjust to the de- mands of high school life. 30 Class Activities The three classes at Hoover have worked very hard this year and have made Hoover very proud. The class sponsors Mr. Rankin, Miss Hall, Mr. Usil- ton, Mrs. Meyers, and Mr. Simpson—have been very pleased with the achievements of the classes this year. The Senior Class surpassed all past classes in the magazine sale and planned the modernistic Junior Prom, Christmas in Contempo. The Junior Class organized the elegant Senior Prom and a fun-filled picnic for the whole school, before the Glendale-Hoover track meet. The Sophomore Class presented the charity ball, Springtime Carrousel. and profited greatly on their candy sale. All three classes have had many more varied activities, but behind them has been the individual effort that has really counted. For if it were not for the help of students v orking on committees, w would not be able to have these activities. 31 Girls’ Bogs' League I Sue Greenhalqh Vice Pres. With the help of our sponsor, Mr. Rankin, our spirit and enthusi- asm enabled us to surge forward and make every activity a suc- cessful event. The Sophomore dance, TROPICAL PARADISE, with its Medi- terranean setting and atmosphere, was a cherished accomplish- ment. Hard work and success spelled out the tremendous results the MAGAZINE SALE came to be. Our mighty class sold an all time high in this Senior tradition. We honored the class of '59 with the Senior Prom, MOON- LIGHT AND MEMORIES, truly a memorable occasion for those who attended. The JUNIOR BARBEQUE was another milestone on our road to be recognized as hard workers and successful leaders. The imagination and ideals of those who decorated and worked on the Junior Prom made CHRISTMAS IN CONTEMPO, a modernized version of many Twentieth Century concepts. Our energy, spirit and get-up and-go on BEAT GLENDALE DAY enabled us to stand out and take our place at the top among the other classes. And like the symbol of the Ming Tree throughout this Scroll, we the class of 1960 have become a symbol of growth and achievement. Having attained our goals and conquered the obstacles that stood in our path, we have established a feeling, among others and ourselves, of pride and respect towards our class. Graduation v ill mark the end of our delightfully fun-filled years at Hoover. Seniors, when you take hold of that diploma, step out into the world with the same incentive and fervor to succeed, that you have used to make our class great, and each and every one of you v ill make your life the same epitome of success you have made the Class of 1960! Following their theme, Beat Glendale, the Senior Class presented a hilarious skit which pictured Glendale High students as beatniks. Led onward by their peppy song and yell leaders, the Junior Class showed so much enthusiasm that they won the spirit activities for Beat Glendale Day. Clad in white shirts, the three classes en- tered Hayhurst Hall for the traditional Beat Glendale Day competition. At the end of the assembly, Ed O'Leske, Senior Class presi- dent, received the coveted trophy for the best overall activities on Beat Glendale Day from Queen Sandy Goode. A Knight To Remember provided a very enjoyable evening for over 300 couples who came and danced to the music of Dick Slavett's band. 151 Informal Dances There was plenty of punch and cookies served from the cute pink and white refresh- ment stand at the Sophomore Dance. Springtime Carrousel, the second annual Sophomore charity dance; proved to be an outstanding success. One of the most successful informal dances this year was the 'Sock Hop at Christmas time. Many students danced to the music of the Hoover dance band during lunch and part of the fifth period. After the dance Mr. Shochat led us in singing some Christmas carols. 152 R.O.T.C. The second semester Girls' League Board worked very hard planning and organizing the activities for Activity Day. The Senior skit had terrific variety with everything from the Charleston to Can-Can girls. As usual, the women's faculty presented a very humorous skit. Their production was entitled Little Red, Red, Red, Riding Hood. Among the games played on Activity Day was an exciting tug-a-war between the wo- men's faculty and the girls. 156 Boqs’ Daq Several weeks of beard-growing came to a climax on this day when the beard contest was judged. These boys were chosen as winners for having the most unique, unusual, and luxurious beards. Big Jim Burdett runs across the finish line at the track meet which was among the Boy's Day activities. Boxing and wrestling were also among the athletic events in the boys' gym. Boys' Day proved to be a lot of fun for the guys who entered the many track and field events. One of the highlights of the boy's events was a faculty-student basketball game. In this picture Mr. Cassell is shown bravely guarding Jim Tschida. Entertaining One of the highlights of Hoover's talent show was The Dance of the Sugar- Plum Fairies brilliantly per- formed by Mike Sikie, Fred- die Alexander, Chuck Fes- ler, Jim Tschida, and Martin Hamer. Hoover's favorite? songleaders, Charlie Kittleson, Marty White, and Forrest Beaty are showing their skill at songleading during our pep assembly on Twirp Day. As U e See It Under a ceiling of spark- ling stars and a back- ground of flowing formals, the Concert Choir sang a sequence of romantic songs. Mr. Kenneth Wilson, choir director, with the help of Mr. Campbell, band director, and Mr. Palmateer, stage director, made the musical possible. Due to Mr. Wilson's ingenuity and hard work, this year's production was even more spec- tacular than usual. Talented tenor, Doug Hopkins, added an extra highlight to the musical with his out- standing solo. Four rather terrifying Indian braves corner squaw, Joan Causey, in the song, Pass That Peace Pipe. 162 -Volume III Charlie Alaimo and Florice Kurtz both sang solos in the New York City sequence of the musical. A romantic scene was created by a modern ballet while the choir sang, Heaven Drops Her Curtain Down. This number proved to be one of the favorites in the show. The Performing Dance Club danced a soft-shoe to the music of the choir singing, Forty-second Street. The several dances added variation to the musical. This year's musi- cal featured a poli- tical sequence as a parody on election year. They carried on a musical cam- paign supporting Alexander Pot for president. 163 Speci'a Many loyal and spirited Hooverites turned out at every basketball game to cheer on our victorious team. Yum-Yum, says Jim Bush after sampling the goods at the P.T.A. cake sale. At the annual Basketball Banquet, Allen Young was presented with the Most Valuable Player of the Year award for his terrific point scoring. Pleasant. 1959 seemed to be the year for Ed Siminski’s gridders, but injuries and an ever-present second half letdown placed the Tornadoes in the Foothill League cellar with a 2-7 won-lost record. In the first two practice games against Alhambra and Mark Keppel, returning lettermen Mike Sikie, Jim Tschida, Gerry Murray, Jack Kniseley, Jim Burdett, Gary Gum, Don Read, and Chris Dawson sparked Tornado victories. The next two teams, Franklin and San Marino, proved too much for the Purples. The league was the same old story. Hoover bowed in order to Pasadena, Muir, Burroughs, Burbank, and to Foothill League Champion, Glendale. Sophomore sensation Forrest Beaty looked good in these games, along v ith his junior teammates Marty White, Bob Fuller. Dick Christman, Steve Pleasant, and Jim Marquardt. Although the Tornadoes did not have a winning season, the year was very valuable for rebuilding and gaining experience for the Juniors and Sophomores that played much of the time. With the returning lettermen that are coming back, the Tor- nadoes look forward to a formidable season. 171 Forres! Beaty (9) takes a pass from Danng” Don Read for a sizable gam against the Al- hambra Moors. Despite a strong fourth quarter surge by the Moors. Hoover held on for a 21-19 victory. Gerry Murray and Mike Sikie sparked the Tornado victory. Practice Games Mike Sikie (26) is brought down by two Franklin tacklors after picking up valuable yardage. Jim Burdett (70) and Jack Kniseley (60) watch the play after executing their blocks. Heads up play by Steve Voight paced Franklin to a 19-6 victory over the Tor- nadoes. 172 !.{ik ? Sikio (26) takes a perfect pitchoul from Don Read as Tom Harold (86) comes up lo load the Hoover interference. Hoover 0 Muir 20 Hoover entered its first league game of the 1959 season boast- ing a two win-two loss record. Despite occasional shows of power by Hoover, a superior Muir team triumphed by a score of 20-0. The first quarter promised an exciting game, for neither team was able to score until the Tornadoes fumbled to set up the Muir score. Muir again threatened with another drive to the Tornado 6 late in the second quarter. After throwing two incomplete pass- es, Muir quarterback, Brian Rapp, threw to the end zone where Forrest Beaty snagged it. The fieet Tornado halfback evaded the entire Muir team for a spectacular gain of 70 yards before slipping on the wet turf at the Muir 35. Hoover had moved the ball to the Muir 20 when the half ended. The second half began with another Muir score, putting them ahead 14 to 0. Hoover took the kickoff and marched to the Muir 22, where the drive was halted. Muir took control and 9 plays later scored their third and final touchdown. The rest of the game was composed of short drives by each team until the final gun was sounded. 173 With Don Read (10) leading the charge. Mike Sikie (26) sweeps the end against the Burroughs Bulldogs. Hoover 7 Burroughs 12 Hoover's second half letdown again appeared against Bur- roughs as Hoover was defeated 12-7. Burroughs took the opening kickoff and pushed close to the Hoover goal. Indian quarterback Harvey Holt took to the air on the Purple 40. Sophomore speedster Forrest Beaty grabbed the pass on the Hoover 16, and raced 84 yards down the sidelines for the score. Murray's point made the score 7-0. Hoover offense seemed to sputter and die after Beaty's run. Unable to move the ball, the Tornadoes made only 3 first downs during the entire game. Late in the third quarter, Burroughs took the ball on their own 27, and in only 9 plays scored. The extra point was too wide, making the score 7-6. Hoover took the kickoff and moved the ball to their own 41, where they punted. Gerry Murray's 54 yard punt into the Bur- roughs' end zone seemed to be a huge barrier. But then, the Hoover defense collapsed, allowing a score only 4 plays later. Joe Licitra blocked the extra point, putting the Indians ahead 12-7, a lead Hoover was unable to overcome. 174 Gary Gum (85) grabs a pass !rom a Burbank doiendor. Despite a last mmutc- rally by the Tornadoes, the Bulldogs held on ior a 20-13 v.-in. Hoover 13 Burbank 20 Probably the most exciting Tornado game was the Burbank encounter, which saw the Bulldogs emerge as the victors by a score of 20-13. The Bulldogs drew first blood, marching 65 yards after taking the kickoff. Mike Weimer broke through to block the extra point. The Tornadoes got their first break of the game when A1 Leh- man recovered a Burbank fumble. Quarterback Don Read's pass to Mike Weimer put the Tornadoes in scoring position. Seven plays later Hoover scored as Dick Christman crashed the center. Murray's kick made the score 13-7 as the half ended. Early in the third guarter the Tornadoes got another break as Jack Kniseley intercepted a deflected Bulldog pass. The Tor- nadoes moved to the Bulldog 6, where they gave up the ball on dov ns. Burbank took the ball and drove to the Hoover 5, where an end sweep made the score 20-7. Hoover, unable to move the ball, was forced to punt. Burbank bobbled the punt and Forrest Beaty recovered for the Tornadoes. Don Read scored 7 plays later; Murray's kick was blocked, making the score 20-13. In the final minutes of the game, the Tornadoes pushed 87 yards in 11 plays to the Burbank 1 inch line when the gun sounded. 175 Pasodena's W. H. Butler is qarg-tackled by Tornadoes Bruce Mac Vicar (80). foe Licitra (dented helmet), and Mike Weimer. Hoover 6 Pasadena 35 The Tornadoes entered the Pasadena game with hopes of salvaging their 2-5 season record. But the Bulldogs overpowered the Tornadoes, as Hoover, playing by far their worst game of the season, was buried, 35-6. The game started quickly as Pasadena racked up three rapid touchdowns before the first quarter ended. Halfback W. H. But- ler the Bulldog offensive star, set up all of the Pasadena scores. Pasadena added another score in the second quarter on a choice 55 yard run by Butler. Hoover's weak offense collapsed as the half ended with the score, Pasadena 28—Hoover 0. Hoover's lone moment of glory occurred early in the third quarter. The shaky Tornado defense held the Bulldogs for the first time all evening. The Bulldogs in turn were forced to punt. Fleet halfback fim Marquardt fielded the punt and, on the next play from scrimmage, raced 65 yards for the only Hoover score. Gerry Murray's kick for the extra point was blocked. Early in the fourth quarter Pasadena's reserves added an- other touchdown making the score 35-6. At this point, Coach Ed Siminski sent in his reserves who played out the game. 176 Hoover 6 Glendale 19 The annual Hoover-Glendale rivalry again flared as the Dynamiters took their fifth straight classic by whipping the Tornadoes, 19-6. Underdog Hoover jumped into an early lead in the first quarter. The Tornadoes took the kickoff and, sparked by Forrest Beaty, moved to the Glendale 22-yard line. Here quarterback Don Read threw a beautiful pass to Gary Gum for the touch- down. The try for the extra point was unsuccessful. At this point Glendale's left-half, Tom Seabold, began to shine, ripping off forty yards in four plays, and climaxing it with a two yard smash for the first Dynamiter score. The Tornadoes took the kickoff, but stalled in their tracks. Glendale took over, and with the help of Seabold and all- C.I.F. guard, Damon Bame, ripped off sixty-two yards in nine plays, adding Glendale's second touchdown. During the second half the Tornadoes could pierce no farther than the Dynamiter 38-yard line. However, Tom Seabold and his crew drove ninety-one yards for the final Glendale score. The game ended with Glendale the victor, 19-6. 177 ■■i Jim Burdett. Capi. Sr.. T. 6'. 190 Marquarat. Halfback Hansen. End Weimor. Halfback Alexander. Halfback Don dead, Capl. Sr.. OB. Coach Novinger seemed to have his work cut out for him in his initial season as head coach of the Bees. But fighting spirit and good clean play, led to a very successful season with the Cyclones losing only to Foothill Champion Glendale in league play. While Fred Shier, Lynn Fortner, Bill Frick, and John Levrett provided the experience, Ray Valasek, Terry Turrell, Bill Fabian, Steve Glava, Denny Baker, Jim Dowell, Ted Butland, Denny Oliver, and Bob Slater fought their way up from Junior Bees to first string positions along with Sophomores Rick Russ, Dan Mc- Farlane, Ron Morris, Jim Sorenson, and Jerry Wyatt. Starting the season with a spine tingling 7-6 defeat at the hands of a powerful Mark Keppel eleven, the Tornadoes pro- ceeded to stop Alhambra 27-0 and to halt Franklin's three-year winning streak 6-0 before running into a rugged San Marino sguad to whom they lost a hard fought 12-0 decision. In the open- ing league game last second heroic actions by Frick salvaged a 19-19 tie which stopped Muir's four-game winning streak. In the succeeding games the Cyclones bowled over Burroughs 19-0, Burbank 20-7, and Pasadena 15-7. Led through the practice season by A1 Young and Steve Sabins, the Tornadoes entered the League v ith only four losses in 15 games. However, three of these loss- es came at the hands of the top three seed- ed teams in the C.I.F. In League play, Hoover swept through Muir, Burrough's, Burbank, and Pasadena., Then came the tv o crucial games with Glendale. After two hard struggles the Dyno's emerged with the League Championship. Three boys received post season honors. Captain Reip received All-Foothill League recognition, as did Steve Sabins. In the first game both teams were tense and excited resulting in sloppy shooting and ineffective floor play by everybody ex- cept Dose, whose 27 points paced the win. The Dynamiters were never headed in the games as Dose used his 6'8 in every way possible. Hoover's All-C.l.F. Player, Al Young, along with reserve, Chuck Nelson, led the Tornado attack with 12 points apiece. Tornado captain, Steve Reip, who was averaging 14 points a game, was un- able to score. This proved to be the decid- ing factor. The second game was a nip and tuck affair with the Tornadoes ahead most of the way. Placing a three man defense on Dose, the Hoover quintet stopped the one man team.' With only two men on the rest of the Dynamiter squad, Hagen, Wynn, Henderson, and Weaver simply passed the ball around until one had an open shot.
