N2 gl? HQ In ig This is so embarrassing. go1ng . . . going . . . gone! Herbert Hoover High School is not where most people would go for a taste of the Old South, but that is exactly what came to mind during the slave auction held there. Several students and even a few courageous teachers were auctioned off by Colonel Bob Fleming, a certified auc- tioneer. He made the slaves feel at ease while they were, and sometimes were not, being bid on at the same time managing to coerce prospective buyers into upping their bids. He was colorful, jocund, and downright entertaining. The Colonel came up with many amusing comments, such as his references to his rising blood pressure when a young lady was nearby and his expression of sincere regret that his female teachers did not look like ours. The auction was also a financial success. Bidding began at 504: and went up to 821.00 for Valerie Waits. As for the teachers, the most expensive was Mr. Don Walker at 3522.00 and the most for the least was Ms. Debbie Sinclair going for 83.50. Altogether the auction brought in a total of 325000, much more than any of its predecessors. 100 'LS . E . Stand aside, this one's mine if , ,A . iv Bez ll .alfa Hold back the crowd.
