Midway into the year Mr. Jim Higginbotham, our Vice Principal, was promoted to Principal of Elkview Junior High. His replacement is Mr. Carlton Gandee. When asked if he had encoun- tered any problems with the students respecting his authority, since he was formerly a coach, he declared that he had no problems whatsoever because he had always been an assistant assis- tant . Mr. Lonnie J. Miller, our returning Principal, as well as Mr. Gandee, graduated from Glenville State College where he received his A.B. degree. Mr. Miller also received a M.S. degree from Syracuse University and a Masters in Ad- ministration from West Virginia University, another of Mr. Gandee's alma maters. This year's Huskie mascot performs twice-first as a cheerleading mascot and then as a band member. There's a lot of running, says Becky Davis, this year's mascot. She often has band and cheerleading practice on the same day. This summer the cheerleaders practiced once a week and every weekday during August. Becky missed cheerleading camp because it was the same week as band camp. During a football game she cheers during the first quarter, then late in the second quarter she changes into her band uniform, to perform at half-time. After half-time she is a cheerleader once more. By the end of a game I'm exhausted, just totally, and soaking wet with sweat, says Becky. In between band and cheerleading she finds time to do her Chemistry, Zoology, and College Algebra and Trigonometry homework. Becky is also a member of the United Nations Club and the Vice-President of the West Virginia Advent Christian Youth fellowship. They love me. Y f Oh Boy, a new flea collar! The victory over G.W. marked the second straight year Hoover's gridders have turned back the Patriots. Hoover then defeated St. Albans 31-20 in their last home game of the season. Although the victory was anticlimatic to the George Washington game the Huskies out fought the Red Dragons and iupgraded their season record to 6-3. Strangely enough what may have been the most exciting game of the season for the Huskies ended on a sour note as they lost to Nitro 3-0 on a field goal with three seconds remaining in regulation play. The game was a hard fought, defensive battle which saw both teams unable to make any sort of serious offensive threat. The loss ended the Huskie's impressive string of victories at four leaving the Hoover gridders at 6-4 for the season. i l l 49 x - 'H-v Thi ' 1978-1979 u kie Countr ! Johnna Lyons and Judy Niday, or the J 8: J connection, have excited crowds everywhere with their two-woman show. The two have put on an amazing exhibition by scoring 179 of Hoover's 237 points so far this season. Lyons is leading the squad with a 18.3 average while Niday is hitting at a 13.7 pace. J 8: J started off the Huskies season by almost single-handedly beating the Nitro Wildcats. Although the girls lost to Stonewall Jackson 39- 34, Niday and Lyons kept their torrid pace by scoring 15 and 11 points respectively. Hoover then came back to beat Charleston Catholic 43-25 by using a sterling defense as shown by the stoppage of Irish star Beth Kogoy to only eight points. J 8: J combined for 33 of the Huskies' points with Niday pumping in a career high total of 20 points. Lyons then scored 60 points in the next two games during victories over Sissonville and South Charleston. The 48-26 romp over Sissonville was highlighted by the girl's sprawling defense and hustling play. Lyons then tallied a career high 36 points while also putting on a free throw exhibition by knocking in 14 and 15 attempts. So beware Kanawha Valley Conference, the J 8: J tandem is on the prowl, and they are hunting for a KVC Championship. Other members of the starting lineup include Susan Cowley, Chris Jones, and Sherry Cox. Five home games remain. They are, Dunbar on Oct. 31, Charleston on Nov. 7, Nitro on Nov. 9, Stonewall on Nov. 14, and Sissonville on Nov. 23. The four away games are, East Bank on Nov. 2, Catholic on Nov. 16, St. Albans on Nov. 21, and South Charleston on Nov. 30. Following a loss to George Washington, 31-18, J 8z J came back to nip Dupont 45-43 when the Panthers missed a last second field goal attempt. Lyons and Niday again combined to carry the load in both of the games. Charleston then dealt the Huskies their third loss of the season as a tough defensive per- formance was being administered to the J 8a J Connection. yJg55l1IyE5 Lyons, senior Judy Niday , 4 f Wk Q7 w Lv ., fa QW Sherry Cox A Coach Watt xt -3 as I if 'vi X U' 1 O 'ED' X ' 1 By Brian Tolley Herbert Hoover's girl's basketball team has finished at the .500 mark at 10-10 with con- secutive wins over Sissonville and South Charleston. Johnna Lyons continued to play well despite the temporary departure of star, Judy Niday, who sustained a sprained ankle. Lyons is currently second in the Kanawha Valley Conference behind Catholic's Beth Kogoy with a 17.7 scoring average. Sophomore Susan Jack started in Niday's place and has been doing an excellent defensive job. Stephanie Carte and Connie Bell, both sophomores along with Jack, brighten the future for the Huskie girls. Judy Niday made her comeback a successful one by scoring 20 points in the girl's last home game with Sissonville. The Huskies won the game 50-34, in recording their ninth victory of the season. Niday and Lyons then combined for a 42 point performance in a 65-51 win over South Charleston. They had 23 and 19 points respec- tively. Connie Bell contributed 9 points for the Huskies. 67 I 1 variety adds spice A shower for Mom. 4 x -a. , :ot .15 , J 1 .4 1 ,- , Miss Personality? Not from this picture, Run on, Run on. Either of these titles would have been appropriate since a good portion of the Talent Show consisted of Bluegrass, even though only two bluegrass bands participated. First there was Ramblin' Grass, consisting of Matt and Mike Morris, Shayne McCoy, and Joe O'Dell. Mrs. Lipscomb joined in with the boys for their own rendition of Fox on the Run . Also, The Blue Creek Revue picked a few selections for which they placed third in the competition. Their band consists of Richard Hardman, Mike Melton, and Tim and Flip Morris. They, too, had some female accompaniment from Peggy Carpenter and Debbie Estep on Country Roads . There was, however, a wide variety of other acts. The formost of which in- cluded the genuine talents of Melanie Larch singing Songbird , and Pam Looney along with Sandy Cox singing If We Only Had Some Time , a song whose music and lyrics were com- posed by Pam Looney herself. There was also a dance by Renee Carper and Beth Young, which won first place, a barbershop quartet which placed second, a floor routine by Stephanie Huffman, and a demonstration from Mike Fink's skateboard team. Ohhhh noooooo! Who could forget the Mr. Bill's Show, or Crystal Jones Roseanna Roseannadanna, both taken from Saturday Night Live. A couple of other teachers besides Mrs. Lipscomb were also in the show. Mr. Dana Humphreys did an ex- tremely funny monologue, well most of us enjoyed it, right Conrad Searls? Mr. Gus Perkins also did a comedy routine, it was something about a wild and crazy guy , but we still haven't figured out what it was. Last but certainly least, let's not forget our witty Master of Ceremonies, Matthew Humphries. Although he was sometimes boring and occasionally didn't make sense, he was more often funny and the show could not have made it without him. The students from Herbert Hoover who will participate in the All-State Chorus Concert are: sopranos Melanie Larch and Carmen Bragg, altos Julie Blackwell and Danita Mullins, tenor Chris Taylorg and basses Blaine Hess and Carlton Withrow. The All-State Chorus Concert will be held in Hun- tington on March 31. The students selected to represent Herbert Hoover in the All-County Chorus Concert are as follows: sopranos Carmen Bragg, Patty Cobb, Alice Hardman, Melanie Larch, Kyla Morrison, Michele Payne, Sandra Shafer, Linda Whitehairg altos Julie Blackwell, Debbie Estep, Tinki Knight, Danita Mullins, Becky Ore, Michelle Ringoot, Teresa Slack, Ruth Wygalg tenors John Bird, Curtis Evans, Phillip Hersman, Blaine Hess, Bobby Hodges, Mark Lewis, Randy Pierson, Chris Taylor, Malcolm Whiteg basses Kenneth Baker, Larry Fisher and Carlton Withrow. The All-County Chorus Con- cert will be held on March 23 at 8:00 p.m. at the Municipal Auditorium. The spring chorus concert will be held at Herbert Hoover High School on May 28. Blaine Hess will present a selection at the baccalaureate. The full chorus will attend this year's awards assembly and the graduation ceremony to add musical voices to the festivities. The chorus director, Mrs. Patricia Kelly, commented on the spring plans for the chorus. Preparing for the All- County, All-State and school concerts will be the highlights of this year's spring season. The chorus will travel to all elementary and junior high schools in the area. The purpose of these visits is to bring publicity to the Choral Depart- ment at Herbert Hoover and to build up interest which will be shown by the in- creasing number and better quality of the chorus. 74 5 , , fi? f 2' 'Q P is 431 fx ' 'M if 'iff' w. Written by Ronald Alexander, Time Out For Ginger is a tlu'ee-act comedy. The story starts out with a fairly staid banker, father, Howard Carol KDavid Grovesl, who needs some sort of creative release and finds it in lecturing to local high school students on the need for fulfill- ment. It develops, however, that one of his daughters, the youngest of three, Ginger fTerry Allenl, has been very much im- pressed by her father's speech. She decided that her fulfillment can best be realized by going out for the football team. Any number of complications arise and Agnes, the mother CAmy Wernerj, has the task of trying to run the household smoothly amidst the chaos while Liz the maid CBonnie Biagil, keeps up with Ginger's exploits as a football player. The father's job is jeopardized because bank president, Ed Hoffman KJeff Harrisl doesn't approveg the older daughters Joan and Jeannie CPaige Parish and Teia Hooverl, insist that their social life has been blighted, especially Joan whose boyfriend, Eddie Davis CRandy Humphreysl, is captain of the football team. Disapproval mounts over Ginger's trying out to play football. The school principal, Mr. Wilson fTom Morrisb, tries everything he can to prevent her from playing. And her boyfriend, Tommy Green KMatt Humphreysl, threatens to end their relationship. Will Howard lose his job? Will Joan and Jeannie become hermits? Does Tommy break off with Ginger? There's only one way to find out. See Time Out For Ginger for yourself on November 16 and 17. By Troy Acree The Huskie wrestling team has wrapped up the season, with a fourth place finish in the KVC Tournament. Several Hoover wrestlers managed to get to the semifinals in that tournament. They were Tom Harper in the 112 pound class, David Hall at 119, Daris Shamblin as Unlimited, and David Maloney in the 125 class. Marty Maloney, who posted the top record on the team during regular season, won the championship in the 155 pound class by pinning Stonewall Jackson's Andy Marchal. Although they didn't win the conference title, the Huskie team was impressive at times and was in the race for the title most of the season. Coach Steve Kee believes his wrestlers pretty well lived up to his pre-season expectations, although they werenit quite as proficient at the end of the season as he hoped they would be. Overall Coach Kee thinks his team had a pretty good season. He also is already looking ahead. We are going to be a good team for the next two years because we had several good young wrestlers this season who are going to help us in the future. Seven Hoover wrestlers qualified to compete in the State Tour- naments February 22-24 in Wheeling. They were Rusty Lyons - 98 lb. class, David Crow Hall - 119 lb. class, Danny Bamhouse - 138 lb. class, Marty Maloney - 155 lb. class, Robert Neal - 105 lb. class, Steve Huffman - 132 lb. class, Daris Shamblin - Unlimited. Individual records through the Regional Tournament were: Rusty Lyons 14-12, Robert Neal 4-13, David Hall 17-11-1, David Maloney 16-13-1, Steve Huffman 12-13, Danny Barnhouse 10-13, Don Lucas 4-11, Marty Maloney 24-4, Jeff Young 11-13, Doug May 3-8, and Daris Shamblin 21-8. u 1ST ROW - Coach Key, M. 1 Meadows, J. Mime and More Approximately 100 to 150 suppor- ters came each night to watch the performance which was staged two nights in a row. All the money received was donated to Daymark. The benefit cleared 3500.00 plus for Daymark. Other groups from Charleston par- ticipated and performed in Juvenescence. The St. James Liturgical Dancers opened the show with a special dance. John Hackney followed with some original numbers on his guitar. The Daymark Dollies were not to be surpassed, though, as they did an interpretive ballet com- plete with tutus and frisbees. The production, directed by Maryellen Hannah and Kathy Kalinyak, was at least one month in preparation. The New Age Players noticeably practiced long and hard to present such a professional style per- formance. The show crossed back and forth l from mime skits to dynamic dance numbers. Scenes from the skits in- cluded regulars like The Hulk,', Jaws, Up and Downf' and The Marionettef' New additions were The Dew Drop Inn, and The Mountain Climbers. Everyone's favorite, The Robots, was back again with new variations. The dancers from The New Age Players were equally entertaining performing to Takin' It to the Streets, The Best of My Love, and Come Sail Away. To conclude Juvenescence, the Elk River Band came on stage to per- form some well-known numbers from their repertoire. The New Age Players should be complimented for the long hours spent in preparing for this worthwhile benefit. Afterall, it was 'a really big shew'! 87 the jackastronuts launch from h.h.h.s. Herbert Hoover High School is not where most people would go for a taste of the Old South, but that is exactly what came to mind during the slave auction held there. Several students and even a few courageous teachers were auctioned off by Colonel Bob Fleming, a certified auc- tioneer. He made the slaves feel at ease while they were, and sometimes were not, being bid on at the same time managing to coerce prospective buyers into upping their bids. He was colorful, jocund, and downright entertaining. The Colonel came up with many amusing comments, such as his references to his rising blood pressure when a young lady was nearby and his expression of sincere regret that his female teachers did not look like ours. The auction was also a financial success. Bidding began at 504: and went up to 821.00 for Valerie Waits. As for the teachers, the most expensive was Mr. Don Walker at 3522.00 and the most for the least was Ms. Debbie Sinclair going for 83.50. Altogether the auction brought in a total of 325000, much more than any of its predecessors. 100 'LS . E . During the 1978-79 school year the Pep Club was involved in many spirited activities. These included putting up nearly enough posters and signs for sports events to make imitation wall paper in the halls and the gym. They also decorated everything from bulletin boards to a fence at Homecoming and even the bleachers for ball games. The club members participated in the various dress up days during Homecoming week. Even though they usually made their own cheering section during games to help the cheerleaders, their enthusiasm was not limited to sports events. They also helped the March of Dimes to collect money for their cause. The Pep Club was prominent when the thrill of victory rang through the halls, but it was also a ma- jor asset in keeping the morale and spirit of the student body, as well as the athletes, raised when these same walls fell silent with the agony of defeat. Part of the driving force behind the enthusiastic collection of so much 114 food was the promise of an Italian dinner from the International Club to the club bringing in the most food. The winner of this taste tempting in- vitation was none other than the French Club, famous for its food oriented format. The French Club with its familiar fervor accumulated 146 items. The dinner was held in February and, needless to say, was thoroughly enjoyed by all members of both clubs. 5 I l -1 . H' . my 'A ,- Yan. y . in w u f ,1 4 is K -Q, A 1 - -1. I. That's what the Special Olympics are all about. The Special Olympics for our region were held on April 30 at Oaks Field in South Charleston. Many students from the Charleston area participated in the Special Olympics including 15 Hoover students. All of these students were on hand at the Olympics from 8:30 to 2:30 p.m. to participate in various athletics such as the 50 meter dash, the standing broad jump, the high jump, the frisbee throw and the softball throw. Hoover students participating in the Special Olympics were: Keith Wilmoth, Sharon Rhodes, Denise Olive, Nora Shaffer, Gary Hodges, Robert Blackwell, Greg Swiney, Lela Stricklen, Clinton Mul- lins, Tim Murdock, James Johnson, Rodney Patton, Charles Newhouse, Billy Weikle, and Jeff Shafer. Six Hoover participants were awarded gold medals for their achieve- ments. They were Lela Stricklen, softball throw, Robert Blackwell, long jump, Billy Weikleg 50 meter dash, Charles Newhouseg frisbee throw, Keith Wilmoth, frisbee throw and Rodney Patton, softball throw. Second place winners were: Gary Hodgesg softball throw, Keith Wilmoth, long jump, Nora Shaffer and Lela Stricklen, frisbee throw, and Robert Blackwell, 50 meter dash. Third place winners were: Sharon Rhodes, frisbee throw, and Robert Blackwell, softball throw. James Johnson won fourth place in the 50 meter dash. All of the students who took a part in the Special Olympics should be recognized and honored for their fine showing. Each student should feel a sense of pride in achieving the goals they set for themselves in the Special Olympics. Special Olympics contestants are from left: Keith Wilmoth, Robert Blackwell, Nora Shaffer, James Johnson, Rod Patton, Charles Newhouse, Sharon Rhodes. huskies are a competitive team By Ann Porta Sz Troy Acree Distance running, sprints, discus, and the shot put - all parts of the age old sport of track and field. The Huskie track team is sound in all of these departments and is looking forward to a good season. Coaches Fred Myers and Mike Chandler have both expressed op- timism concerning the upcoming season. We're going to have a very competitive team, states Coach Myers. He also says, the distance team seems to be doing a very good job. Billy Belcher, Danny Rhodes, and Steve Kennedy should do well along with Danita Mullins, Sue Bair, June Casto, Donna Parker, and Dena Ashley, who also show promise. Our sprinters are showing a lot of talent, as do our people in the field events. Coach Chandler thinks the running Huskies will be very successful. We have a lot of runners returning and a lot of new, good talent coming in. We have reasons to ve very optimistic. It is being able to push yourself beyond the limits of physical en- durance. It is the agony of running until you feel you can run no more. The pain of it all day after day makes you wonder if it's worth it. But when a goal is accomplished either running a faster time or bringing home trophies and ribbons, you realize that it is. You start to believe in yourself. You develop pride for your sport. You become a self-motivated person because you compete with yourself to break your own records. It takes a very special type of dedication to endure. To all of these very special people who run track, your school salutes you for giving your all and for a job well done. Alright, Miz Huffman, hand over them pencils. to be cowboys. by Jeanne Statts Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys. The fearless cowboys who will be competing at Hoover on May 12 and 13 obviously did not heed this warn- ing popularized by Waylon Jennings. They happily risk their necks on bucking broncos with names like Widow Maker and Nut Cracker . They completely ignore the constant threat of serious physical injury for the thrill of victory , not to mention the purse donated by the local merchants. They thrive on the knowledge that every crowd breathes tension to be broken in seconds by the agony of defeat - as in one celebrated spill where a horse kicked its rider in the face while the hapless victim, suspended from one stirrup, was dragged through the rancid mud of the rodeo ring. There is also the kind of genuine pride a man reflects while enduring with grace on a beast gone mad. These thrills are not only for the adult male. The Girls Rodeo Associa- tion was formed with the feminist vigor that typifies our modern culture. The Intercollegiate Rodeo Association gives college students the chance to compete and gain realistic experience. In this organization, the pressures of professionalism are eliminated, while its members also have the added bonus of college enthusiasm and spirit. Even the lit- tle people can get an early taste of competition in the Little Britches League. There are several other interesting aspects of rodeo. For instance, picture the wild bucking broncos in their prime, as they hurl courageous and carefree cowboys through the air. The rodeo clowns add a dash of color while keeping the audience entertained be- tween acts and during the awkward times after the inevitable accidents. Nik, Lf-r Ri 'if-V:- '4' N I lg . Soon the seniors' years at Herbert Hoover will be nothing more than water-colored memoriesg painted pic- tures of the people and places left behind. He's the per- son who pulls everything together when it's coming apart at the seams. When patience and time are running short, this gentleman can step in and get the job done. Yet, his identity is left unknown for his name rarely appears on any of his work. His reward is the satisfaction he receives from helping to build our school and community. Who is this masked mann? The Lone Ranger? Spiderman? Superman? Close, but not exactly. Hoover's super hero is none other than Mr. Danny Webb. Mr. Webb is the Community Education Coordinator at Herbert Hoover High School. One of his many duties is to set up the classes given at night in various schools of the community. Mr. Webb also works with guests who come to our school to perform such as special actors and dramatists. Danny Webb spends countless hours working on programs and activities in both schools and the com- munity. One can find him at Hoover long after school has closed helping with a sporting event or checking to see that night classes are running smoothly. While juggling his schedule around to be able to spend the time needed on these programs, Danny Webb still finds time to work with his real love, drama. Mr. Webb has been involved in dramatics since his early years at Marshall University. He has directed many large scale church plays and has also directed children's plays which are casted by students at Hoover. And if you're wondering why there has been such a dramatic change in the quality of the class plays here at Hoover in the past couple years, it's because Danny Webb has had a large hand in directing them. Credit has long since been due this colorful man with such a lively heart and personality. Not every school is lucky enough to have such a dedicated individual. So, next time you think you see a masked man on a white horse or a caped man bearing a large S on his chest zooming down the hall, it won't be the Lone Ranger or Superman. It's mild-mannered Danny Webb rushing to someone's aid and rescue. f,.',,,. ' ' Santa's Little Helpers? No wonder we had so many problems!
