ATHLETIC COMPETITION . Interscholastic athletics are now an accepted and highly desirable part of the educational program. The growth of interscholastic athletics has been a rapid but also a rather rocky one. The role it now plays in the total school program has been the result of years of tedious develop- ment by conscientous and dedicated professional people. Why has the interscholastic program grown so rapidly? Many factors are involved in an- swering this question but primarily it has been the great appeal that competitive athletics have made on the participant, the student body and the community. Athletic competition has come to be an American tradition and institution. The desire to compete on an organized, friendly, and safe basis has brought students flocking to the programs. Each year there is a steady growth in the number of participants and the quality of the game has improved correspondingly. A prime question often asked is What does the athlete achieve from his participation? The answer will vary from one individual to another but there are many desirable possibilities. He develops physically, learns desirable habits in health, and safety, learns good sportsmanship, develops real friendship with squad members and opponents, learns the meaning of discipline and to take orders and carry them outg learns to control his nerves and feelings, to work out problems for himself 5 to smile in the face of defeat and discouragementg to be humble as a vic- tor, and to play by the rules of the game as he will have to play by the rules of life. All of these and more may be achieved and each may be instrumental in the development of the individual as a worthy member of our society. The athlete gains much from his interscholastic experiences but most important of all to him is that he has enjoyed himself by playing. The self satisfaction, the friendships obtained, the experiences faced, and the memories from his participation will never be forgotten but will grow as his life grows year by year. He will always be thankful for his high schools interscho- lastic athletic program. --Coach Carlton Gandee FOOTBALL SCHEDULE 1965 BASKETBALL SCHEDULE 1965 HOOVSI' Dupont Hoover Catholic Hoover Dunbar Hoover S.
