I wish to congratulate each member of the l957 graduating class for the achievements accomplished while here at Hoover. VICE-PRI lZIPAlS MISS DlLLON'S MESSAGE You seniors have likened the happenings and accomplish- ments of your years at Hoover High to silhouettes. Your senior silhouette is really YOU, the background is your HERITAGE. lf it were not for a forceful background, a silhouette would be but a vague and meaningless shadow. How for- tunate you are that civilization doesn't have to start all over again every generation. Your heritage, which has been ac- cumulating itself for many thousands of years, is a precious gift. Use it. As an artist skillfully places a lovely object against a perfect background, use the heritage of the ages -books, music, art, religion, eternal truths-as the perfect backdrop for your personal life. It is encouraging to remember that even a very small figure can make a giant shadow. Your belief in the power of even one individual, your faith in your own potentialities, your confidence in the resources of your priceless heritage, can transform your senior silhouette into a silhouette sublime. HELEN F. DILLON Vice-Principal MR. FORD'S MESSAGE SENIORS: With rare exception, the history of civilization reveals that the great ideas, discoveries, inventions, and artistic accomplishments which have brought man to his present high pinnacle came from persons still in the youthful period of life-under 35. The affinity of youth to greatness is explained by Emerson: So nigh is grandeur to our dust, So near is God to man, When duty whispers low, Thou must, The youth replies, I can. The suggestion seems to be that success comes early, but only to those who believe I can. Your approaching graduation entitles you to this faith in yourself-I can. Farewell and good luck, ROBERT E. FORD Vice-Principal V. GRlZZLE'S MESSAGE As you, the Seniors of 1957, approach the end of your days at Hoover, graduation becomes a period to be faced with mixed emotions-nostalgia for the happy times, relief at the release from the pressure of examinations, eagerness for experiences ahead, and a little uneasiness at the thought of entering the adult world. It will be an interesting world with many challenges and opportunities. As your friends and teachers wish you Godspeed, they are entrusting you with the responsibility of carrying into your new world the ideals of fair play that you learned in athletics, of honest effort that you put forth in the classroom, of responsibility that you assumed in school and class activi- ties, and of friendliness that you followed in your relationships with your fellow students. Following these ideals, the road ahead will lead you to many successes and satisfactions as you take your place with the many other fine alumni of a fine school. V. GRIZZLE DEA 0F GIRlS Dean of Girls Q4
