This year, in numbers exceeding those of any previous war year, our friends and pals from Hoover have entered the armed forces. They are setting aside their personal hopes and plans for the fu- ture to guarantee that America and the world shall have a future. Many of our classmates left early in the year, some are already overseas. It is to these boys, who did not have the privilege of finish- ing this last wonderful year in high school, that we, the class of I944, proudly dedicate this annual. 'ik ik' ik Home and family mean a lot to us . . . Dad's little jokes and Mother's quick praise for all our triumphs, however small . . . those pre- war iaunts to the mountains and the unforgettable family picnics at the beach . . . the Sunday night sessions aro-und the radio, with Dad trying to match wits with the quiz experts . . . and the wonderful raids on the refrigerator after a late movie. Church on Sundays! Serious, thoughtful men and women in uniform . . . the quiet peacefulness of sunlight streaming through arched win- dows, and the deep vibrant notes of the organ . . . an eloquent message from the pulpit . . . words that seem to mean more than ever now in these troubled times. FOOTBALL SEASON 1943 ik ik ik I-Ioover's I943 championship footbaII team, coached by Raleigh I-Iolt and Bob Breitbard, had a victorious season with five wins, one tie, and no de- feats. This is the first eleven at I-Ioover in eight years to complete an un- defeated season. The statistics were very favorable also, the Cards scored IO3 points while their opponents tallied only I6 points. Rex Carnes, a member of the team who was ill in the hospital, was made honorary captainwof the year. Bob Kynaston and Frank Smith were elected co- captains for the season. The season opened with the powerful Sweetwater eleven. This game was probably the Cards' toughest, and after .a give and take battle, it ended in a O-O tie. In the second game the Redbirds hung up an easy 25-O victory over Point Loma. Next came Grossmont, who held I-Ioover to no score in the first half, but, finally, the Cards broke loose and chalked up a total of I9 points. La Jolla proved to be a tough victim in a 6-O win. They gave us plenty of trouble, for they were tricky and speedy. Thus far, the boys from I-Ioclcerville were not scored against, but, in the next game, Coronado made I3 points Iwith the gridders from I-Ioover piling up 40 pointsl. Then came the game of the year with our crosstown rival, San Diego I-Iiqh. This was the championship Qamegiand I-Ioover edged a 7-3 victory in a thriller that Iceot the stands Quess- ing untiI'the whistle blew. The Cards' touchdown was made in the third quar- ter by ag pass from Eddie Crain to Fred Espy. This game ended a colorful and triumphant-season for the undefeated champs from I-Ioover. F 0 0 T B A L L ik 517 ik Working under a new coach, Dave Rebd, the Junior Varsity squad, Rebd's Rebels, tied tor the local championship with San Diego, winning tive games, losing one, and tieing one. What the team lacked in experience was made up in aggressiveness. Most ot the games played were against second string varsities, so the Cards did very well tor themselves. Tom Fatty Krambuhl, Bill Tanner, and Jamie Erickson were the iron men ot the winning Hoover team. Other outstanding players were: Fred Chrestman, Allen McManus, Art Filson, Kenneth Bishop, Millard Stantorth, and Russell Tan- ner. The letter winners were as follows: Tom Krambuhl lcaptainl, Russell Tanner, Bill Tanner, Allen McManus, Dave Carpenter, Millard Stantorth, Fred Chrest- man, Fred Carpenter, Bob Myers, Bill Straub, Art Filson, Kenneth Bishop, Bob Lewis, Bill Twitty, Graley Taylor, Bob Allen, Don Conners, Dave Wallenhaupt, Rae Kickbush, Ralph Palmer, and Jamie Erickson. Plac- ing second, they were defeated only by San Diego l-ligh. Rated very detinitely as underdogs, in the tinal S. D. l-ligh contest the Redbirds snatched the game out ot the Cavemen's grasp with a last minute stand, and ended on top ot a 40-38 tally. Bob Phelps, 'following in the tootsteps ot his older brothers, was high point man ot the squad. Although he was switched from guard to forward many times during the season, he was always regarded as a scor- ing menace. Varsity lettermen were: Don Nuttall, Walt Mayer, Dick Barnes, Paul l-lickey, Kenneth Greenman, Larry Berger, Gene Devoreaux, Eddie Crain, Bob Phelps, Gene Vosseler, and Joe Del Gaizo lManagerl. Winning J. V. Letters were: Bob Griswold, Dick Smith, Allan Good, Winston Bailey, Bob Langdon, and Gene Edelbrock. Members ot the squad selected tor the All-Victory League First Team were: Dick Barnes, center, and Bob Phelps, guard. Don Nuttall was chos- en tor a spot on the second team. BASKETBALL ik sk ik Coach l-lolt's casaba tive had an outstanding season this year, winning I3 out ot I5 games, and trouncing their equally strong rival San Diego in three out ot tour contests. l-ligh point man ot the squad was Gwynne Bouch Boucher, ace forward tor the Redbird tive. Gwynne had a wide variety ot shots un- der the basket, which kept the boys in the game many times. Letterwinners of the city championship team were: Tom Maheras, Joe Bartlett, Don Crumpton, Gwynne Boucher, Dick Murray, Bob Kuyken- dall, Albert Grundstrum, Phillip Montable, Don Montable, Dick Buchanan, Dick Riley, Ed Wright, Bill Jones, and Fred Conger lfvlanagerl. Chosen tor the All-League tirst team were: Joe Bartlett, guard: and Tom Maheras, guard. 712 gil? gf? Breitbard's Babes, the Cee team, came through with the champio-nship in the Coronado Invitational Tournament, in which seven- teen teams were entered. Letterwinners ot the Cee team were: Norman Gray, Charles Boucher, Leo Pick, Wilfred Yip, Jack McColl, Glen Awrey, Bill Goset, and Bill Jones, Glenn Krebs, and Rex Driver. Edelbroclr, Mclntyre, Holt. ik sf? sk introducing something new this year, Coach Rebd and his thinclads staged the First Annual Hoover Relays, in which all ot the Victory League teams competed. The Redbirds captured this meet, which gave a good start to the season, and then proceeded to cop the next tive meets without mishaps. Teams falling prey to the l-loclcerviller's slashing onslaught were: Grossmont, Point Loma, Sweetwater, Kearney, and La Jolla. Consistent point winners tor the Cards were: Bill l-lartley, mileg Dick Mc- lntyre, pole vault: Gordon Wininger, hurdlesg Jack Norberg, sprints and hurdles: Gene Ricard, Bill Straub, and Bill Tanner, shotputg and Lloyd Shunemann, 880. This season witnessed the loss ot one ot the best sprinters in the city, when Millard Stantorth pulled a muscle and missed all ot the meets. l-loover's defending track spilcesters ot '43 came through with another suc- cessful season by copping the Victory League Championship tor the second consecutive year. R A C K ik sk 7117 The Bees witnessed a very mediocre season this year, winning but few meets although they did produce some individual stars. Main point win- ners for the Bees were: Bill l-lerrin, hurdles and relay: Jamie Erickson, shot put: Dick Meyers, IOO and 220: and Pete l-lall and Rae Kickbush, IOO and hurdles. The lighties had a very good relay team which did the course in 46.7 seconds. Falling before the Cards' might were the Pointers and the Komets. The Cee youngsters had a fair season with Bob O'Brien, Phillip Yip, Wil- fred Yip, and Jack Shorey paving the way in l-loover's defeat of Kearney, Point Loma, and Sweetwater. ji? ik ik The Cardinal leatherlungs, better known as the cross country men, came out very well in their '44 meets. They ran against the Marines, State Col- lege, Kearney l-ligh, and their big cross-town rival, San Diego l-ligh. The divis- ionals were run three weeks after the last cross country meet: and the La Jolla milers won with the l-loover spikesters pushing a close second. Most ot the games played, so tar, have been with ser- vice teams consisting ot many ex-pro ball players. The Victory League season is just getting under way as we go- to press. Playing their tirst league game with Point Loma, the Redbirds displayed their slcill by shutting out the Pointers 4-O. ln all ot the pre-season games, the Breitbardmen have made a good showing with expert ball handling and a powertul aggregation ot hitters. The team had only tive returning Seniors: Tom Maheras, Bill Ruzich, Lee Singleton, Frank Smith, and Dave Antanger. l-loover's '44 record, thus tar, in- dicates that Coach Breitbard can build a good ball club ot sophomores and juniors. sk ik ily The J. V. and sophomore teams have an unmarred record to date, having gone through their schedules without a loss, and including a 5-4 win over San Diego l-ligh. On the mound tor the powertul J. V.'s is long arm Allen Good. Allen pitched against many strong service teams and has definitely proven himselt a star hurler. The sophomores under the capable guidance ot Eddie Crain, made up tor their laclc ot experience with a will to play good ball. They have earned the reputation ot a hustling ball club. , ks fr. . war R A .
