LEE SLATORE Principal Vice-Principal Vice-Principal U UU-. . ADMINISTRATION OORDINATING and CONSTRUCTIVE efforts of both faculty and students have been necessary to make l-loover Senior High School what it is today. It is easy for each student of this high school to see how necessary it is for him to have an active part in establishing new standards and upholding the traditions of the school. lt is not easy, however, for you to feel that you are an important part of a whole nation of people. lt is, nevertheless, true that your city, your state and your country must depend upon the character and efforts of its people for progress and' development. As you go out from this school as graduates, you will realize that the hand of time is leveling out and spreading work and responsibility as well as leisure and luxury. You have been taught much in recent years of how to concentrate your efforts to succeed in life in some vocation and to use your leisure time to improve your bodies and perfect yourselves, but not enough has been said or taught of the value and necessity of sacrificial service to others. ln life you will find organizations of men and women playing an ever-increasing popular and important part, and you will have to choose the groups in which you wish to work. There are those groups which are entirely festival and those which are directed toward some substantial accomplishment. May you choose wisely and invest your education and personality in those which have an unselfish, constructive purpose and which require sacrificial service: for no matter how much you may wish to improve yourselves, it is through sacrifice and service that character is built. While you are seeking happiness for yourself, remember that nothing is so necessary to happiness as strength of character, for it is only the strong man or woman who can meet adversity and success alike with serenity, hopefulness and faith in the future. I would leave this word with you. Start thinking and planning now for a life of worthwhile service. lt is my hope to see you in future as an important spoke in the revolving wheel of some organization whose load is a program of progress and con- structive value to the nation. The most pressing business was, ot course, the selection ot rings and sweaters. When, as senior A's, they returned in the tall, Bob Breitbard was chosen as president: Sarah Taylor was vice-president: and Jack l-lighley was elected as secretary-treasurer. The committees and cabinet were duly chosen to care tor the myriad details necessary to a successtully con- ducted graduation. The semester was a busy one, not only tor the seniors, but tor the others in the student body. As usual, the most exciting teature ot the tall semester were the tootball games, made still more exciting, since this was l-loover's tirst season in the Coast League and there were many thrilling games at various coast schools. Soon atter the beginning ot the term, a get-acquainted party, under the guidance ot Mrs. Keyes and Cardinal Co-ed president, Nancy Mar- shall, was enjoyed by the new upper-class girls who were entertained by senior A girls. Cn October thirty-tirst l-loover-San Diego students danced at Mis- sion Beach atter the big game. On November sixteenth play ticlcets were distributed tor the Mary's Ankle production, successtully presented tor two nights, December third and tourth, to capacity crowds. December second arrived and the senior class song competition was held. On Jan- uary tweltth they had a grand time ditching in the snow at Pine Valley. Seniors and other student body members danced January twenty-second in the library at the A. S. B. ball, and the seniors again at their ball at the Casa de Manana on January twenty-eighth. Sunday, January thirty-tirst, Vesper sgfvices were held at the First Baptist Church. On February second Towei'Day exercises were attended by senior A's and B's. V-. 'A These pleasant times culminated with the graduation exercises on February third at State College with Miss Phyllis Baldwin as valedictorian. Every senior telt truly satistied that his last semester in school had been the happiest one ot his high school career. U , FEBRUARY SENIOR CABINET jj' F MRS. We will forever lceep Memories of you! Someday we'll come again, Then we'll surely see Still all your banners bright Crowned with victory! So with eager soul, as swift the seasons roll, We will strive our goal to achieve, And with loyal hand we'll always stand By the school so grand we now must leave! Though the day is near, our Alma Mater Dear, When our service here will be through, To the love we bore our comrades of yore We will evermore be true! Now to the future's store, Love and hope and strife, Forward from your doors we go, Forward into life! l-lappy our youth has been, And in future days Oft' we shall fondly sing Alma Mater's praise. lAlma Mater to be sung with the second choru So we march along to l-loover's battle-song And with voices strong sing her name! We will live aright for Red and White And will ever fight to bring her fame! JUNE CLASS CDF 1937 l-IEN Tl-IE JUNF,'37 class met in September '36 as senior B's, as otficers they elected: Bernie Carroll, president: Betty Forbes, vice-president: and Mary Wing, secretary-treasurer. ln keen an- ticipation, the excited senior B's chose an attractive, ditierently-styled sweater and their rings, received awards Tower Day, and participated in a sing-song. When the class organized tor a second time in the spring term, the new officers chosen were: President, Ray Adair: vice-president, Frank Bon-, ham: and secretary-treasurer, Mary Wing. The Monday tollowing Easter vacation tickets tor the senior A pro- duction, The Bridal Chorus, were given out to the seniors. This par- ticular senior A production was an entirely unprecedented and ambitious attempt in that it was presented most successtully tor tour nights to capacity audiences, April 7, 8, 9, and IO. The prime motive tor this unusual attempt was the need tor supplying additional tunds necessary in the publication ot a more ambitious issue ot Dias Cardinales. No etiorts were spared in attempting to make their last semester at l-loover one ot the happiest and most memorable times ot their ,school career tor the senior A's. With that in mind the committees and cabinet members were selected. The tirst eltorts, those in behalf ot the senior play, succeeded admirably. On April sixteenth the A. S. B. ball took place in the school library. Later, April twenty-seventh, came Cpen l-louse. A new event was the senior A, senior B athletic competition called Field Day, held in May. May twenty-eighth the seniors ditched at Pine Valley: June tenth the ball took place at l-lotel del Coronado: June thirteenth, Vesper services: June titteenth, Tower Day: and, at last, a beautiful graduatign in the Ford Bowl on June sixteenth. FCDGTBALL HE I936 FOOTBALL season tound the Cardinal tootball team a member ot the widely known Coast League, an added prestige to the l-loover team since the League consists only ot the schools ot the highest caliber in Southern California. Though the league cham- pionship was not within reach during the season, crowds unprecedented in size and enthusiasm attended the home skirmishes. The next season's players will be hard pressed to show themselves to be as mighty in spirit and tight as those ot the i936 season who abounded in enthusiasm and earnest endeavor, and who practiced diligently that in enthusiasm and earnest endeavor, and who practiced diligently. They gave the needed inspiration otten when things looked darkest, and their departure will be a real loss. They are: Oscar Gibson, Captain Don Trimble, Joe Fitzpatrick, Bob Brietbard, Dick Longtin, and all the other lettermen and non-lettermen who leave to continue in new under- takings. Coaches John Perry, Lawrence Carr, and Wotiord Caldwell whose constant training and encouragement reshaped the team into the time unit that it was, are all looking ahead with keen anticipation toward added achievements in the IQ37 season. BASKETBALL A l-lE I936-37 HOQVER VARSITY team began this season with only one returning letterman, l-larold Prusaq consequently much coaching and shaping was the order. Prusa, with the Junior Varsity and the B substitutes ot the previous season, constituted the new Var- sity squad. ln addition to a rigid schedule, sickness played a prominent part in slowing down the proceedings. l-lowever, a diligent attendance at practice during vacation proved a great aid. Ot the tive players who later became the regulars ot the team, not one had had previous playing experience with his teammates, a tact which contributed largely to the slow start ot the season, since close co- operation between the players is ot great importance. l-lowever, betore the season had advanced very tar, the improvement in the co-ordination between the players was clearly noticeable. ln the San Diego County Tournament, l-loover played a titty-titty draw, winning the Sweetwater game with a score ot 29-27, and losing the St. Augustine game I6-22. Likewise, in the Coast League skirmishes, the l-loover squad encoun- tered more determined opponents and emerged from these trays with but one victory, trom Santa Ana, yielding under the attacks ot the other teams, and tying tor fourth position in the Coast League. ? First row: Carroll, Monsees, l-lampton, Shepherd lCaptainl, Tazelaar ,Stuart. Second row: Minor, Davis, Greville lManagerl, Coach Carr, Edwards, Cormier. BASKETBALL B l-lE I936-37 SQUAD OF B's is able to look baclc on a truly enviable season ot victories, having sent numerous tor- midable squads ot opponents down into deteat betore a strong barrage ot powerful playing. Their success may be attributed largely to the sincere and continued interest that they exhibited in the game, to their admirable sportsmanship, and to their unremitting practice, a tactor which plays a large part in the pertection ot any team. At the beginning ot the season, the squad was strengthened by the experience ot three returning lettermen: John Shepherd, whose merits served in large measure to elect him captain ot the squad: Charles l-lamp- ton, Ralph Monsees, and to complete the squad ot nearly thirty boys, one almost unprecedented in size, came the B reserves, the Junior B's , and the tormer C's . ln the San Diego County Tournament the B's distinguished them- selves by solidly tilling out the schedule with tour consecutive vcitories. l-lowever, the opponents encountered by the B's in the Coast League games did not prove to be such a snap . Despite the threats ot these powertul opponents, the B's managed to come ott very ad- mirably, carrying ott tour victories out ot tive games, as well as the co- championship with Long Beach Poly. 4 A i , 1 First row, left to right: Neil, Greville, C. TRACK LTl-IOUGI-l TRACK is not a major sport at l-loover, its success during this season may warrant that it assume a posi- tion ot major importance in the coming season because ot its rising popularity. Many records were shattered and new ones established in the course ot the past season, one ot the most successful yet, with many boys renewing their interest in that sport. There are three classes ot teams in track events just as in other sports. Some ot the contests which track teams take part in are: the mile race, the halt-mile event, the one hundred, and the two hundred and twenty yard dashes, the high hurdling, the broad jump, the shot put, the discus throw, the high jump, and running on the relay team. The relay team was the most successful, winning the Coast League championship, and bringing every meet to a close with a victory tor the Cardinals. The boys who compose the team are: Clyde Yakel, John Finan, George Kahle, and Bob Beckus. Clyde Yakel competed in the one hundred and the two hundred and twenty yar dashesg Captain Bob Beckus in the mile rung Bernie Carroll in the high hurdles: Al Cordray and Felix Aguirre in the high and broad jumpg and Philip Krutzch in the shot put. All ot these boys established new school records. Ai . 4 M, ,V.. 7 , I JM In ,,. .lf My if 2417! W , , V ., A , 4 V AN Y S ' -- Avmw 1 7, 1- 1 W .e A Gyx E , 5 1511-21 E If . BASEBALL ASEBALI. has always stood high in the esteem ot l-loover student rooters, and the I937 season was no exception. Many ot the games were thrillingly played, climaxing, in some instances, in scores ot only one point ditierence. The l-loover spring season started on March fifth when l-loover ac- complished a 4-2 win over Glendale. The following day, playing the alumni, they were deteated by a score ot I l-IO. During the Easter vacation the l-loover team entered the Pomona lrivitational Tournament tor the fifth consecutive year. Playing at that meet l-loover triumphed over Grossmont with a score ot 3-2, and later against Fullerton, our boys scored twelve runs to their one. However, l-loover was finally stopped by Escondido in the third game, scoring one run to their two. Playing in the league, l-loover placed tourth behind San Diego, Woodrow Wilson, and Alhambra. A 6-4 victory over Alhambra, a league leader, however, cinched the tourth place tor the Cardinals ahead ot Long Beach Poly and Santa Ana. Ralph Monsees leads the club with a batting average ot .400 and will undoubtedly be awarded the Todd-Kelly batting trophy in addition to being chosen to travel on an exhibition tour to Japan. No discouragement seems to dim shining promises tor next season, and doubtless larger turn-outs will greet the coming team. 5 I 'Ti ' ' fit ZTTTD ,ff 'fn' fy' T . lifmm , .. , J, fi i jf A , ., I Mfr' L,,. ,,.,,,, ,.,A L.m.W,5, ' r v,,.,, X V ,, I f . i .A ,HA HQ if I fis if 4. h , I is Nh A-fm., I V. i. in ,J M K .mg , N M I 7 i 'i V, '. yy 1 li, ,, Nj y 1 W : r' .. Last semester, under the super- vision ot Mrs. Mildred Stanley, hockey was taught in class and played atter school as well. This semester torty-two girls tormed a drill team as a part ot their physical educa- tion training. Deck tennis, an interesting game to play when developed in the proper skill, was also taken up recently during gym periods and is being played with in- creasing popularity. Golt holds a place as an extra- curricular activity, and a team has been tormed under the guidance ot Algy Lambert, playing weekly at the Emerald l-lills Golt Club. Tumbling, under the instruction ot Miss Geneva Upp, may be taken in place ot the regular gym training. From among these girls in the tumbling classes are chosen those tor the regular team to represent l-loover each year, togged in their sparkling red and white costumes, at the l-loover- San Diego game. ln addition to these tour new sports there are those regularly played: basketball, baseball, speedball, volleyball, tennis, and paddle tennis. Each semester class teams com- pete in 'atter-school games, one point being awarded to each girl playing and complying with attendance require- ments. Points are awarded tor basketball, baseball, volley- ball, speedball, track, and swimming, and the girls who earn ten points receive a letter in athletics. The girls who participate in atter-school games are eligible to join the Girls' Athletic Association which is sponsored by Miss Geneva Upp, head ot the girls' physical education department. The commissioner ot girls' athletics, who is elected each semester by the students, auto- matically becomes president ot the organization. This semester, under the leadership ot Cecelia Markle, Corine Bailey, Frances Truax, Betty Gurney, and Ruth Gates, the group enjoyed a splash party, a horseback ride, a dance and a hike. Mary Downs was commissioner ot girls' athletics tor the tall semester ot IQ36-'37, Instruction in the girls' physical education department is directed by: Miss Geneva Upp, Mrs. La Rue Williams, Mrs. Mildred Stanley, and Miss Lena Peteirsen. r 1 fiii' , f ,,,, . ily r GORDON BENNETT ORVILLE FAULKNER RALPH SUNDERI-IAUF J ZX Www MARY DOWNS CECELIA MARKLE UANITA ADKINSON PEGGY FAY 'YTMT-194' udi' M..-...,-qv COMMISSIONERS February Gordon Bennett ......... .. At the beginning ot the tall semester the club ot titty-tive members was organized under Perry Lewis, president. She was assisted by Jeanne Couvrette, secretary-treasurer, Betty Bonham, head librarian: and Doris Swanson, assistant librarian. Beverly Virginia Clarlc was the publicity manager. During the tall semester the Girls' Glee Club sang tor a Parent-Teachers' Association tea, a halt-hour Parent-Teachers' Association radio broadcast over KGB, and at l-loover's Open l-louse Night tor their parents. The club had a prominent part in the traditional Christmas pro- gram last December. Most ot the club's engagements during the tall semester were sung at churches. The girls sang at the First Methodist-Episcopal Church, the San Diego Tabernacle, the Normal l-leights Community Methodist Church, and the Scott Memorial Baptist Church. O LESS THAN TRULY REMARKABLE has been the growth and increasing prominence ot all the classes in the vocal music department during the past year. One, the Boys' Glee Club, has repre- sented Hoover in a wide range ot programs presented continuously throughout two semesters, entailing arduous practice in the work ot prep- aration, tor the boys must be in readiness at all times in anticipation ot invitations to sing betore any number ot civic and private clubs. The Boys' Glee Club experienced a novel treat when it sang over station KGB. Another unusually tine entertainment was contributed to by the Glee Club when the boys sang at a beautitul Christmas musical tete given at three performances tor the school and the public. With the Boys' Glee Club, the Girls' Glee Club and the A Capella Choir made the program the unusual success that it was. Other than the Christmas concert, the Boys' Glee Club sang in engagements betore the Elks' Club at the rally banquet preceding the Hoover-San Diego tootball game. Later, they appeared on the Open House program at the school, November tenth. Also, in the tall they made an appearance in the Russ auditorium at the annual Teachers' Insti- tute sessions. Still later, they presented a program at Horace Mann Junior High School, and at the P.-T. A. district meeting held at Balboa Parlc. On February third the boys sang at the baccalaureate exercises at State College. 57 gf ., . .. ..,x. ,.,. . ff' CAPELLA Ci-IQIR First row, left to right: Correll, Kent, Summers, l-lubbard, Dring, Swope, Miller, Howell, Close, Jones, Loob, Kramer, Mclntyre, Jacobsen, Swanson, Bruce, Elmore. HE HERBERT HOOVER Senior High School Or- chestra, under the direction ot Mr. Close, gives a direct apprenticeship to a musical career. ln actual practice the members learn the tundamental requirements ot working in a symphony, with the expressed desire ot be- coming a protegssional musician. During their high school course ot three years, they read representa- tive scores ot the masters. Each year a concert is given to allow the students to apply again in actual practice what they hope to continue as a profession. Students ot more than usual ability and interest are otiered an op- portunity to demonstrate their talent in outstanding solo compositions in concert worlc each year. To illustrate that the training ottered at Hoover is beneticial in a practical sense, many former Hoover students have secured positions in protessional orchestras, in colleges ot music, and in a teaching capacity throughout the United States. There are students who desire to study music, not with the consid- eration ot a musical career, but as a cultural activity. Their attendance in the orchestra is welc are strictly demanded. . n The Senior Orchestra plays tor graduation twice each yeary smaller mbles are also selected trom the group to meet the demands ot civic ense , , , Organizations and appear trequently. ln the line ot social tunctions the l t ' 't' t members. members ot the group have a banquet yeary O ini ia e new omedq however, their constant interest and attention rnswvawgzisl-an-sv' 2 Tx' 4 efe F t left to right: J. Posters and placards have been prominently displayed in all ot the outstanding localities in the school reminding all who read ot the aims ot this service club: clean speech, clean sports, clean scholarship, and clean living. One ot the tactors greatly responsible tor the continued interest and attention centered in the I-li-Y is the wide round ot activities with which it engages itselt. The school and the members ot the l-li-Y are constantly aware that this is detinitely an ever-growing club. Included among those activities ot this year were a trip to Camp Marston during Easter vacation, a skating party on April twenty-sixth, as well as one held previously this year. What organization would consider its tun complete without a beach party such as the one enjoyed by the members ot the t-li-Y on the evening ot May twenty-sixth at La Jolla? The members ot the Point Loma l-li-Y and the l-loover club partook ot a banquet together. ln addition, this club presented a plaque to the season's outstanding track athlete. With activities such as these as examples ot the type ot services and pleasures participated in by the members ot the l-li-Y, it is clear that their purpose: To create, maintain, and extend throughout the school and community, high standards ot Christian character, will never escape the notice ot l-loover students. At present, its otlicers are: President, Peggy Fay: vice-president, Jimmy Lyle: secretary, Helen Crosierq treasurer, Russell Martin, publicity agent, Dolores Bennett. The committees are: Program committee, with Jimmy Lyle as chair- man: social committee, with Dean Nauman as chairman: and the music committee, with Leland Nicholas as director. Un Saturday, May titteenth, the state convention ot l-ligh School World Friendship Clubs was held at San Pedro, when all who attended were royally entertained in a widely varied day's program which included: dancing, motion pictures ot previous conventions, and sight-seeing ex- cursions about the harbor, a visit aboard a trans-Pacitic liner, and an auto trip to the Palos Verdes l-lills. More important, however, were the panel discussions in which par- ticular students were chosen to take the attirmative or negative side in debates on topics particularly pertinent to situations involving world peace today. William Guenther represented the Hoover World Friend- ship Club, upholding the attirmative on the topic: President Roosevelt Should Call Another Washington Conference.
