JOHNSON MEMBERS ot the Graduating Class ot June l935 - - - ln the months and years that now have their close you have tormed habits ot mind that will now help to determine your outlook on lite. Each year the world about you is changing and each year the challenge tor young people becomes greater. With the spirit ot cheertulness that has marked your stay with us and with a high aim in your mind you hold two ot the prime requisites to success. If you have not already done so, may you early determine your course through lite and then depend not upon your genius but upon faith in yourselt, diligence, earnestness ot purpose and hard worlc. Christopher Columbus, during his long ocean voyage, wrote on the ship's log each day We sailed westward which was our course and this voyage resulted in the discovery ot a continent. Great developments and discoveries will certainly take place within the next titty years and you people are the ones who will be called upon to help bring them about so set your goal and steer a straight course toward it. Since that time the June class ot '35 has seen its school ascend even higher into the heights ot tame. In tootball, ever the toremost sport, it has grown trom a little- heard ot team into a hard tighting machine that is a serious tactor tor any- one to deal with. As a climax, it has now been admitted into the powertul Bay League. Similarachievements could be related tor the other sports and activities also it there was room tor the story. During its Senior B term, the class chose Bfll Noon tor its president. Bill was well assisted by Carl I-Iendel as vice president: Fred .Iensen as secretary: and Marion Ruting as treasurer. Delzoe Miller was chosen to lead the Senior A class with the assistance ot: Woodrow I-Ielm, vice presidentg Marion Ruting, secretary: and Bill Noon, treasurer. For the tirst time the Senior play was put on tor tour nights. The title was the Torchbearers and was held April 3, 4, 5, and 6. May I5 the class boarded a tleet ot trucks and spent the day at Pine Valley. This was the tirst time that a June class had gone to the moun- tains tor ditch day. The next important date on the Senior calendar was Vespers, held Sunday, June 9. Tower day was held the tollowing Tuesday, ,Iune II. The grand climax, graduation, was held Wednesday, June I2. Amidst a battery ot tloodlights and tlowers, two hundred and torty- one strong, selt-reliant men and women were sent torth to meet the world. May they meet with Success! I am staying with my old triend Gretta Grant, the greatest woman in the automobile equipment business. She is bound that I am not going to miss a thing. We started in on the Midway. Everything was noise and color. We heard Lionel Chase, who is a na- tionally known barker, shouting that Mickey Burleigh and Paul Raymond Italce your pickj would take on all comers. It the comer won he received two bits. Jack I-louse saw us in the crowd and invited us to look over his model police torce, among whom we noted were Ralph Lejonhud, Jack Allison, James Routh, and Jimmy Williams. A tlashy rocket plane zoomed overhead and we were told that it was Bill Noon going home to lunch with the Mrs. lthe tormer Ruth Sontagj. As we continued on our way we met Erank Olson, the proprietor ot the hot dog stands. I-le was moaning that business was talling ott since Marie Smedley had started her chain ot ice cream concessions. As we were talking, who should barge up but Betty Warren, that tamous columnist, who was doing the tair. She dropped us some bits ot gossip about her tormer classmates who are now tamous-Irwin Baranov the great jeweler and his partner, are backing Kathleen Gerber, Wardene Taylor, and Margaret I-lamer-Charlotte Gilmour, the tamous actress, is tlying trom Europe to the tair and to someone else-United States Senators Janice Shelton and Gladden Boaz are still de- bating on Eederal Aid to Education. Latest reports state that Gladden's in the lead-Margaret Smith is the new star at the Metropolitan-Jerry Lett- wich, renowned communist, has just been put in jail tor rioting tor the 299th time. Just then Betty's escort, Bob Smith, who is the owner ot the Ballyhoo n1As CARDINALES JUNE 1935 Thirty-eight newspapers, came up. l-le was quite elated at having signed up De Stanley's and l-loward l-lalgedahl's All-Girl Band tor his broadcast. Members ot the band l learned, are: Marion Ruting, l-lelen Fibiger, Margaret Fitzgerald, Joe Finnegin, and Louella Bunch. Suddenly a great deal ot noise interrupted our conversation and we turned to tind Bob Flart and Bob Peterson, tamous track coaches at Pooh Blah College, arguing with l-larry l-lodgetts and Lloyd Baskerville, basketball coaches at l-lumdinger College, as to which was better tor the athlete- strained prunes or spinach trom the can . . . As we walked on, a sign caught our eye Real Rodeo Show and Round- up. Both ot us being tond ot that sort ot thing, we went in. There we saw the owner who is that great rancher from Montana, Dan Fitzek, with his cow- boys. Flarold Jensen, Bill l-lostetler, and Ralph l-laddock, giving a show tull ot thrills and excitement. At the baseball accuracy concession we saw Woody l-lelm and Leslie Cassie, big leaguers, taking a vacation. It was near noon when we lett the Midway to hunt tor a restaurant. The Sign ot the Shamrock caught our eyes. We went in and we recognized Rosemary Mahoney as the proprietor. Atter lunch we went to the Science Building and tound Carl l-lendel and Dewey Frazier in a lengthy argument concerning the hypothesis ot What's What. Standing in tront ot the Whoosis Dam's miniature was Ernest Car- ceras, the builder. Seated close to his triend was Fred Jensen, the prominent mathematician, tiguring out how many raisins in a one pound box. ln the Foods and Beverages Building we stopped and chatted with Charles Fay, Arnerica's greatest pure toods importer. l-le wanted to interest us in some ot the shark's tine relish he just had imported from China. Our talk was interrupted by shouts ot Extra! Extra! We bought a paper and learned that Flora Gigliotti had deteated Donnabelle La France tor the Wightman Tennis Cup. Virginia Bryant and June Lawson saw us and insisted on showing us their newest in clothing creations. We went to dinner at De Foe Miller's Penthouse Cate and saw Alice Taylor dance her new dance The Riviera. Then to a concert under the stars to hear Ilene Farris and her violin-Peggy Alberty and her bass viola. l'm so sleepy now, diary, that l had better go to bed. Good night. Cleverly satirizing the Little Theater movement, the three-act tarce was said to be one ot the most successful ot l-loover stage productions. The plot concerned the trials ot a typical amateur company directed by the overbearing Mrs. J. Duro Campinelli, whose stage-ambitious pro- tege, Mrs .Ritter, caused poor Mr. Ritter no end ot griet. Falling scenery, back stage arguments, wrong cues, and lost properties, marlc the action ot the second act, which tinds its setting baclc stage ot a dummy play. The cutting sarcasm ot the dry Mr. Ritter climaxed the tinale ot the hilarious satire. Members ot the cast were Janice Shelton, Betty Warren, Lloyd Bas- kerville, Bill l-lostetler, Charlotte Gilmour, Robert Smith, Gliver Smith, Bob Peterson, Lorraine Morton, Kathleen Gerber, Rae Derrer, and Tom l-lart. Props were taken care ot by lrwin Baranov, David Rubel, Flora Gig- liotti, and Gretta Grant, with Marylin Broolcs and Thelma Baclcstrom in charge ot costuming. The production was directed by C.
