The United States Ship HEPBURN (FF-1055) is named for Admiral Arthur Jary Hepburn, USN. HEPBURN is the sec- ond of the KNOX class Frigates commissioned. Admiral Hepburn began his illustrious career in 1893, when he joined the battleship IOWA, fighting in one of the last battles of the Spanish-American War. He distinguished himself as a Commander during World War 1 and was named Commander- in-Chief, U.S. Fleet in 1936. On 7 June 1938, he was named head of a Board to make recommendations as to the need for additional Naval Facilities in the Pacific and Caribbean area. From 1941 until he retired in 1945, heservedasadelegate to the Dumbarton Oaks meetings which laid the groundwork for the United Nations. Admiral Hepburn died in Washington, DC on 31 May 1964 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. HEPBURN was built by Todd Shipyards Corporation at San Pedro, CA. Her keel was laid 1 June 1966 and she was launched 2 March 1967, USS HEPBURN was commissioned on 3 July 1967. The ships of the KNOX class are designed to operate offensively or defensively in their primary mission areas of anti- submarine and anti-air warfare, shore bombardment, patrol, and search and rescue. This was HEPBURN ' S seventh WESTPAC deployment. HEPBURN has assumed various roles during her seven deploy- ments, including gunfire support in support of U.S. and allied forces during the Vietnam conflict. She has traveled widely in the Pacific and Indian Oceans from the United States to Mom- basa, Kenya, and from Japan to Australia. She has represented the U.S. in many international exercises with allied forces. During extended deployments, the normal complement of 17 officers and 240 enlisted personnel is augmented by four pilots and 10 maintenance personnel when the LAMPS helo is em- barked. HEPBURN is commanded by Commander H.J.
