The Hepburn 's first deployment began with the ship's third trip to Hawaii. From January to June 1971, Hepburn operated with the Seventh Fleet. During this time she visited various ports in the Western Pacific, steamed in four different seas, fired shore bombardment missions against the enemy in Vietnam, replenished many times at sea, escorted different attack aircraft carriers, provided plane guard and antisubmarine warfare protection for other ships, served as the first of the class to operate a search and rescue helicopter in an operational environment, and generally performed all of the functions of a general purpose destroyer. All of these operations were carried out with such expertise and professionalism that Hepburn became, not only the leader of the class, but the leader in the destroyer force. Our young lady had rapidly come of age and matured into a graceful, speedy, competent and efficient career woman dedicated to the concept of freedom of the sea in support of those principles of freedom and justice for all and to providing her assets to ensure that the democratic ideals of our nation will continue to prevail. The Hepburn could do the above lies in the fact that she has a youthful, strong and vital spirit, alive and always seeking to improve conditions. Hepburn is but steel, aluminum, oil, and other materials forged by man, yet one can feel a definite spirit and life in her. This spirit and life are part and parcel of the men who manher, one and all, old and young, career and reserve, officer and enlisted. It is these men who make any ship what it is, her accomplishments are theirs, her reputation is theirs. The everyday work and play of those men is the most important aspect of the Navy - they are the most important asset of the Navy.
