CAPTAIN J THOMAS GILMARTI UNITED STATES NAVY C MMAND G OFFICER Born in San Francisco, California and reared in Aurora. Colorado, Captain Gilmartin graduated from the United States Naval Academy in June I 964. Captain GiImartin's Hrst tour of duty was as Damage Control Assistant in USS RICHARD B. ANDERSON CDD- 786j. After graduating from the U.S. Naval Destroyer School, Newport, Rhode Island in I 966, he returned to RICHARD B. ANDERSON as Engineer OfHcer. Captain Gilmartin then attended the U.S. Naval Post- graduate School in the Ordnance Engineering curriculum and received a Master of Science degree in physics in June I 971. After completion of nuclear power training, he served as Main Propulsion Assistant in USS TRUXTUN CCGN-352 followed by a two year tour as a member of the CINCPACFLT Nuclear Propulsion Examining Board. Cap- tain Gilmartin then served as Engineer Ofhcer in USS LONG BEACH KCGN-92 from December I 97 7 to October I 980. His last permanent assignment prior to reporting to HENRY B. WILSON was as the Readiness and Training OfHcer on the staff of Commander Naval Surface Force. U.S. PaciHc Fleet. Captain Gilmartin 's decorations include the Navy Com- mendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Battle EfH- ciency Ribbon, and other campaign awards resulting from Vietnamese service. The son of Colonel and Mrs. A.F. Gilmartin of Aurora. Colorado, Captain Gilmartin is married to the former Kath- Ieen Driessen of St. Charles, Illinois. Captain and Mrs. Gilmartin ha ve Hve children. COMMANDER JAMES B CARTER JR. UNITED TATES NAVY EXECUTI E OFFICER Commander Carter was commissioned in I 970 after graduation from the United States Na val Academy. His Hrs! assignment was in USS LYNDE MCCORMICK IDDG-82 where he served successively as Missile OfHcer, Gunnery Assistant, ASW OfHcer, and First Lieutenant. Receiving orders to the Naval Academy for initial shore duty, Com- mander Carter taught in the Department of Weapons and Systems Engineering. Following graduation from the Surface Warfare Depart- ment Head Course, he returned to sea in I 97 7 and served in USS BIGELOW CDD-942j Hrst as Weapons OfHcer then as Chief Engineer, Commander Carter was subsequently ordered to duty in USS FOX ICG-33Q as Operations Officer in I 979 where he served for two years. Immediately follow- ing his tour in USS FOX, he received a Master's Degree in Information Systems from the U.S. Na val Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. Commander Carter has been awarded the Navy Com- mendation Medal as well as various other campaign and service awards. He is married to the former Marie Webb of Richland, Georgia and they ha ve two daughters, Katharine Marie and Rebecca. T Y
