Captain Stephen S. Clarey is a graduate of Williams College and was commissioned at Ofticer Candidate School in New- port, Rhode Island in October I 962. His initial sea duty was aboard USS HOLLIS TER CDD- 7882 in Long Beach, California as Gunnery and ASW Ofhcer, and as Operations Ofhcer aboard USS BIGELOW CDD-9422 in May- port, Florida. Subsequent sea tours were as Commanding OfH- cer, USS SUFFOLK COUNTY ILST-I I 732 in Little Creek, Virgin- ia: Executive OfHcer, USS REEVES CCG-242 in Pearl Harbor. Hawaii: and as Commanding OfHcer, USS ELLIOT IDD-96 7 Q in San Diego, California. He has completed numerous forward deployments to the Mediterranean. Western Pacihc, Indian Ocean, and the Southern Pacihc. Captain Clarey has had a variety of shore duty assignments in the Washington area. He has served as a Junior OfHcer Detailer, as a sea control and political-military analyst and study director in the Systems Analysis Division of OPNA V. as a Special Assistant for .loint Matters to the Director Joint Staff and as Head, Planning and Development Branch within the General Planning and Programming Division of OPNA V GMMANDER DESTROYER SQUADRO CAPTAIN STEPHEN S. CLAREY UNITED STATES NAVY Captain Clarey assumed command of Destroyer Squadron TWENTY-ONE in March I 983 after serving as the Executive Ofhcer and Senior Aide to Chief of Naval Operations. Captain Clarey is a graduate of the Na val Destroyer School, the Armed Forces Staff College, and the Senior Ofhcer Ship Material Readiness Course in Idaho Falls, Idaho. From i969 to I 97 I he attended the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration and was awarded a Masters Degree in Business Administration in June I 97 I . He is a proven subspe- cialist in Financial Management and Operations Analysis. His personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Com- mendation Medal, and the Navy Achievement Medal with Combat V , Captain Clarey is the son of Admiral Bernard A. Clarey, USN fketj of Honolulu, Hawaii, a former Commander in Chief U.S. Pacihc Fleet. He is married to the former Roberta Rouzee of Manhasset, New York.
