WILSON CDDG-71 USS HENRY B. WILSON is the first ship of the Navy to bear his name. First of her class to be launched, she is the second to be commissioned of a modern class of destroyers built from the keel up to fire guided missiles. . USS HENRY B. WILSON was built by the DEFOE SHIPBUILDING COMPANY at Bay City Michigan. At the time of her commissioning she was the largest warship ever constructed on the Great Lakes. She was christened by the sponsor, Mrs. Patrick J. Hurley, daughter of Admiral Wilson, in a spectacular sidelaunching, the first time a warship of her size had been afloat in this manner. Because of the unique circumstances under which she was built, the traditional champagne bottle used for christening was filled with water from the Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence River and the Atlantic Ocean. USS HENRY B. WILSON carries the most modern weapons afloat giving her the capability to deal effectively with any threat on the high seas. Her powerful sonar, ASROC and torpedo installations equip her to fight and kill submarines at extended ranges. Her supersonic guided missiles have the capability of intercepting and destroying aircraft many miles from the intended target. Her 5 !54 rapid fire guns provide the ship with the added flexibility needed to effectively handle the various threats imposed in warfare at sea. USS HENRY B. WILSON has a 1200 PSI Engineering plant which produces 70,000 shaft horsepower to drive the ship at sustained speeds of over 30 knots. Each of the four boilers is equipped with a completely automatic combustion control system. Her operations and living spaces are air conditioned and she has the latest communications and electronics facilities. Since commissioning in December 1960, HENRY B. WILSON has participated in 11 cruises to the Western Pacific. Combat experience includes having fired over 50,000 rounds in several hundred attacks against North Vietnamese and Viet Cong targets from 1965-73. During her 1975 cruise to the Western Pacific the ship participated in the Cambodian and Vietnam evacuation and in the recovery of the SS Mayaguez. During these cruises, the ship distinguished herself on numerous occasions and has three times been awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation. USS HENRY B. WILSON is a truly modern ship, designed to meet the challenges of an enemy under, on or above the sea. USS- HENRY B. WILSON is homeported in San Diego, California and is a member of Destroyer Squadron Thirteen. At the end of it all lies the feeling of accomplishment of having grown a little, and the exchanging of wide-eyed recruits for salty, professional sailors The ship itself seems to sigh with relief at another Westpac completed. Each challenge we faced and overcame gave us a better knowledge of ourselves and the task we have yet before us It was by no means easy but this is after all our job. We have placed ourselves in the service of the ideals held by our countrymen and we will go and do whatever is neccessary to further these national goals. lt is as an old sailor once said ships are safe and warm in the harbor but that is not the purpose of ships E -. ...,. ,,...-.-,.- -1 f...-...,...,...- .,,,..-.Q....,,-...--...-..1....
