SQUAD members of Boys, Highls famous Pur- ple Hurricane faced the '37 season with a certain degree of misgivings. Having been pre- sented with an unparalleled record of twenty-five consecutive triumphs by a team that had marched to victory over Georgiaqs strongest prep elevens to clinch a G. I. A. A. championship and gain permanent possession of the Dartmouth cup, they sensed an ever-growing tension at the thought of upholding their predecessors' reputation. And with only three veterans of the first string returning, prospects for another championship were regarded with a mixture of fear and doubt. Yet they took the opener from Commercial, 20 to 0. Orenstein, Sabo, and Goree were click- ing off nice gains all night, and the Purple line proved itself adamant in an emergency, holding the Typists on their own two-yard stripe. They went on to dip Ensley, from Birmingham, 26-6 fthat was the game where Charlie Crouch, substitute back for Sabo, intercepted a pass and carried it forty-five yards for a touchdownj. In a close and hard game they nosed out the Savannah High Geechies, 6-0, and a week later swamped Decatur, 40-0. In a steady downpour, with a cold wind beating needles into their Hesh, and playing on a slippery and dangerous field. they annexed the thirtieth straight by beating Monroe, 7-0. Then came disaster. Lanier, of Macon, by far Boys' High's most powerful and respected antagonist, came to Poncey with the determina- tion to break that string of victories. Aided generously by a super-quota of Hghting spirit, a fleet squad, and a unique system of offense, the Poets provided a real menace. It rained again iltnuthall ' P7 ww that Friday, and the Purples, always at their worst on a muddy gridiron, were dented with a 6-6 tie. Unabated, the Hurricane continued by taking Gordon, a junior college out of the prep class, 14-12. They followed that with a win over Spartanburg, in Spartanburg, 13-6. A week later, the Purples met their ancient rival from across the flats, Tech High. It was the climax of a brilliant season, the long an- ticipated struggle with a traditional adversary. Before a record crowd of 13,000, Boys High crushed the Smithies in a pulse-jerking drama, 19-13, to capture its third successive city cham- pionship. Sabo, Orenstein, and Goree each con- tributed six points. On Thanksgiving, the squad journeyed to Miami for its annual Turkey Day classic. It proved a calamitous occasion, for the Stingerees accomplished what thirty-four teams before them had tried to do-defeat those Boys' High up- startsl The score was 7 to 0. The Miamians in the first six plays had taken Dan Greer and Icky Orenstein out of the game, and before the final whistle blew, had added two more back- field men to the casualty list. The Purples returned to Atlanta, slightly crest- fallen, but with the hope that somehow they might be given a chance to redeem themselves. That chance came when the G. 1. A. A. officials ruled Riverside's claim to the state title false on the grounds of ineligibility and approved a championship tilt between the Lanier Poets and the Boys' High Purple Hurricane. With a revamped backtield and in the midst of a pouring, biting rain, handicapped by injuries Of three left halfbacks, with its best play and its biggest scoring punch rendered useless, the Hur- ricane that afternoon fought with a genuine Boys' High spirit, only to bow, 13-0. It was a miserable day, a miserable crowd, and a miser- able loss, but the 1937 season was a successful one in spite of all that. Secretary In 1925, when Boys' High had sunlc deep into debt as a result of its poor football season, a father whose son was then studying here donated S300 to the school treasury in the hope that to some degree the contribution might alleviate the financial condition. That man was the late Ben Read, former president of the Southern Bell Telephone Company. Grateful, B. H. ofhclals founded the Ben Read Athletic Association, its purpose to be the stimulation of a better school spirit and to aid materially those sports which could not support themselves. Dues were twenty-hve cents a semester, and membership entitled students to various activities which the organization sponsored-motorcades, basketball games, and boxing' matches. This year, seeing' that other activities also needed hnancial help, the organi- zation contributed money to the Tatler, ALCIPHRONIAN, and the Dramatic Club. The name was changed to the Ben Read Activities Association. Alriphrnnian Eitvmrg :wh Eelmting Svnrirtg C Allcorn, F. Aronstam, Ashburn, N. Baggarly, Baker, H. Baldwin, M. Bnrheld, J. Barker, C.
