that our great growth Bill Edwards fRightl is known for his golden trumpet tones. Part of a Dixie- land Band, Bill gives the group polished solos, usually found only in a pro- fessional aggregation. With Bill are Sandy Dipert and Katha Mahaney. 'And with bell and voice and drum.' Thus, on May 16, 1958, began a succession of concerts Henry Ford was to present. This date marked our first Spring Concert. Following in sequence, the Music Department joined forces once again to deliver our first Christmas Concert December 19, 1958, and our first Band Concert March 13, 1959. The tradition had been established. Each season gave us a new program of concerts. Enthusiastic support from students gave band and orchestra members incentive to display their best talents. As school loyalties strengthened, it became apparent that our band should be uniformed for performances on the football field and at concerts. Combined efforts of students, faculty, and parents set in motion a drive to raise uniform funds. Mr. Sam Emmer and Mr. Robert Luscombe planned and sponsored a Band Concert. Students sold chocolate bars. Results of their strenuous Work gave us a band completely outfitted in brown and gold by 1959. Although it was not an easy task, each person who participated in the fund raising feels a pride of accomplishment. Students looked forward with anticipation to the concerts that would be presented this year. We were not disappointed. Each musical extravaganza strove to gain near perfection. In the Words of Mr. Homer Le Gassey, director of music for the Detroit Public Schools: Ford students have made terrific improvements in the past seven months in musicianship, style, and maturity of presenta- tion. This sentiment is shared by everyone. Certainly we are deserv- ing of this recognition. We have set a precedent in musical excel- lence that will be difficult to equal in the years to come. ,f 'x S 'CD ffg.-1' IFE- fe Q ,.- ,. 49
