He created a beauti- ful ivory statue and named it Galatea. So exquisite was Galatea that Pygmalion fell madly in love with her, whereupon Aph- rodite, goddess of love brought the statue to life, and she became Queen of Cyprus. The title of the play, Pygmalion, tells us that Shaw had in mind this ancient legend when he wrote it. Now, Now, Col.
