ouqfas Qybifcolnb Douglas Whitcomb, a member of the graduating class, has attained the dis- tinction of being declared the winner of the State Oratorical Contest held at the University of Kentucky on April 2. Douglas eliminated excellent competitors in our high school, then advanced to the district, and won over sixteen other district entries. The title of the declamation was I Am In- nocent of This Blood, by Alfred Reiman. Douglas has been interested in public speaking since his Morton Junior days and hopes to continue in this line. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin D. Whitcomb of 151 Walton Avenue. In a letter of congratulations to Douglas, Dr. H. H. Hill said, To be first in anything, anywhere at any time, is an achievement, but only those who have superior talents and the willingness to work hard ever obtain first place in a state-wide contest of any kind. This year marks the second time within four years that the beautiful silver cup, presented by the Lexington Herald for one year, has come to Henry Clay. Howard Smathers won in 1933 and later was victorious in the na- tional contest. The school extends to Douglas its hearty cooperation in winning national honors at Oklahoma City in May.

A. Boles of this city. Entering high school from Morton Junior in January, 1933, he was soon recognized as a leader and an outstanding student. He has dis- played unusual ability in scholarship and in athletics, having maintained a standing of 2.8 and having won two letters in both basketball and football. Few persons have excelled John in ability to organize material, express it clearly, and impress his hearers by his genuine sincerity. This skill has marked his work in the classroom, in various club meetings, and on the high school platform, and has exerted an influence for good among the student body. His participation in school life is shown by his extra-curricular record, which is as follows: president of 4A class, president of Henry Clay Chapter of the National Honor Society, circulation manager of Hi-Times, member Stu- dent-Teacher Council, and student proctor during his junior and senior years. The best wishes of faculty and students go with John as he leaves Henry Clay. His gentlemanly conduct and fidelity to duty will long be remembered by his classmates and friends, and are qualities which lead ultimately to suc- cess in life. -4 1 .ivv T. ,,g+,.,,Q.l, ,.
