After-the first qualms caused by the new teachers and classes wore off,thenFresh1esU elected Carolyn Schlechter to lead them, with Carl Christman as Vice-President, Donald Lamver- meyer was chosen to keep the records, and Janet Coultrlp, to take care of the money. The Sophomores initiated the probationers into the realms of high school on October 6. Hallowe'en came and found three of the Freshman boys turning cook at a Hallowe'en party at the Boy Scout Farm. Oh! Those half-raw hamburgers! Arlene Holzhauer entertained the class at her home for a Christmas party. Wayne Stayton moved away during Christmas vacation, leaving the class with twelve members. On Nay ll, 1945, the Freshmen sponsored a Spring dance with John- ny Jackson's orchestra. Before they knew it, the year was over, vacation passed, and they were returning to Hen- rietta High as Sophomores. June Gerber and Wayne Stayton brought the class to fourteen. Donald Lamvermeyer was elected as President, Carolyn Schlechter as Vice.President, Janet Ooultrip as Secretary, and Arlene Holzhauer as Treasurer. Initiating the Freshmen on September 28 was the first social event of the school year. Then came the Hallowe'en party which was held on Oct- ober Sl, 1946. About this time, Donald Lamver- meyer transferred to Oberlin. This left the class with thirteen members. Jerry Currier was elected President. Thus the year was happily spent and was soon gone. It was June, 1968, and the airliner was landing in Mamatuska, Alaska. After seeing all the passengers off, I found that I would have a whole day on my hands. As I was browsing through the city enjoying the fresh spring air, I suddenly sal someone coming toward me who looked very familiar. nOh, don't be silly,U I told myself, nyou don't know anyone in Alaska.n Then suddenly she spoke. Caroline Gresz.ler! Then I recognized her. It was an old friend from my graduating class in 1948, Carolyn Schlechtcr. We breathlessly talked over old times. I learned that Car- olyn and her husband had moved to Alaska so that she could novel about the new Alaskan gather material for her new farming frontier. I was astounded to realize that Alaska could be good farming country. Carolyn insisted that I come with her to see her farm. After a good country dinner, I made my way back to the liner, wondering wLat the rest of my classmates were doing. The next stop was in Oregon. As I stepped from the plane, I noticed one of the new jet racers curcling the field before coming in for a landing. I watched it until it land- ed. who should emerge from the cockpit but Jerry Currier, another graduate of '48. So Jerry had become a pilot. I sopke to him. He told me that he would soon be entering a race between the planets. He was the entering contestant to represent the earth. After a long talk, I wished him the best of luck, and returned to my plane. On the passenger list, I found that our ship would be carrying the American All-Star baseball team. The players laughed and joked among themselves. One of them flashed a smile at me. I instantly recognised that smile and those teeth! Harold Leimbach was one of my passengers. He told me that he was now the pitcher for the team. As I checked off the passengers on my list I received the jolt of my life. Professor Carl W. Christman, Chief Scientist of Harvard University, was also a passenger. Also on the list was Janet R. Coultrip of the Coultrlp School for Nurses in Chicago. Could they be the same Carl and Janet who had graduated with me in 1948? After the customary excitement of the takeoff everyone settled back to relax, and I fould that my discoveries had been correct. The four of us had a long visit as the miles flew by. Janet had started a basketball league for nurses. She was now traveling to Salt Lake City to marry her fiance, a famous surgeon. Carl was giving a series of lectures on the ultra-superatomic age. It seemed as if everyone of our class members whom I had met so far had fared well. Carl, Janet, and the still smiling Zackie got off one so 4:- g!sHE -.fi f'?i?'. M, W M25 14 I' I ie-sch fb 1 Q EI' wnfww, In Hollywood, I decided to look up a reputable beauty shop for a shampoo and permanet. The most advertised seemed to be a shop run by Marie Elnor, nthe woman who makes the stars beautiful. Not to let the movie stars get ahead of mo, I decided to go there. I found the owner to be a small woman with with long, beautifully curled blond hair. It was Marie Perkins. Marie told me that Lois Steele was now in Hollywood. She had made a name for herself in the dress designing business. Her drawing of high school days had certainly paid off. Marie called Lois to tell her that I was in town. Even though they were rushed with business, they took time off to talk to an old friend. When I left them, I had, not only a new hairdo, but an original dress from a nationally known designer. The plane stopped for a short time in Kansas City, but it was long enough for me to find another old friend, Edith Pete. She had married a tall, lanky cattle rancher and had moved West. She told me that ranch life was very invigor- ating and quite different from high school life in Henrietta. She asked me about the others from our graduating class , and I told her of my recent meetings. Then it was time to be off. The next stop was Albrequerque, New Mexico, I bought a newspaper, and splashed all over the front page was a story about some new purchases by the Atonov Oil and Diamond Company. Pictures of the owner and his wife were settled in prominent places. Right away I knew that blond hair and turned-up nose. Veneta Hozalski had actually caught her rich man with a big black mustache! I called on Veneta and found her the same frlendl eerson she had alwa s been. She told for her so much name Atenov was Now I knew Arlene and Bill what Arlene had Y Y me how happy she was now. Her husband cared that he named his business after her. The actually Voneta spelled backwards. what all the Seniors were doing but two, Looking further through the paper, I found become. There was an insurance advertise- ment. Recognising the name as that of Arlene's high school boy friend, I decided to follow it up. Sure enough, when I rang the doorbell, Arlene answered. Several blond, curly- headed, little children peaked around the door at me. After a long visit, I was again on my way. In a Texas airport, I noticed numerous advertisements of a famous grapefruit grove, nGrapefruit, oranges, and bananas grown tree-ripe. Get the best from the best ranch in Texas, the ranch where the fruit is grown by the new Atomic Method - Bill Bonnett.n Bill must have inherited his grandfather's ranch. How I knew what had become of all my graduating class. I visited Bill's ranch and was greeted by a tanned, brown-haired Bill with as many muscles asxhad made him the terror of the Boys' Boxing group in high school. I bade him farewell and r turned to the airport and my work, happy that I had seen all of my old friends '.- il f e D n . ' I ni , A o Nh V HHW' T1 'Lil X aku. K- u. , X '., , 4 , 3? In one game the younger boys won with a score of 12-10. They had three teams: Indians, Yankees, and Wild Cats. They built a miniature Swiss village which included snow-capped mountains, water falls, a house, and a herd of sheep. The third graders made a wall panel about the Eskimos, while the fourth graders made one of Africa. The third and fourth graders were very sorry to have Mrs. Berger leave in January. when they got to know Mrs. Wagoner, their new teacher, they found they liked her very much. FIRST AND SECOND GRADES One of the projects of the first and second graders was earning money for the Junior Red Cross. They presented a dramatization of mThe Three Little Pigs.n They wrote invitations, printed and designed programs, and made tickets to sell for two cents each. The Red Cross nurse put an article, in the Elyria paper about the project and posted some of the programs in the Elyria Red Cross Office. The first and second graders made a feeding station for winter birds. Another project was building a miniature store for arith etic class to help in the study of money. Several parties were held to celebrate birthdays, Christmas, and Valentine's Day. Among many other worthwhile projects, they tried with success to write orig- inal poetry. .. ,nv -' V . 4-. ,.---:cpgpq A , -l, , A ...
