EIGHTH GRADERS ARE UNDEFEATED Henrico’s basketball fortunes appeared bright as Coach Dick Cox’s eighth grade cagers crushed all op- position, compiling an 8-0 record. Long hours of practice had to be scheduled around the varsity and junior varsity teams, and most games were played on Saturday mornings. The team scored two victories each against Patrick Henry, Varina, and Tucker, and also defeated Lee- Davis and St. Paul’s. In the first game against arch-rival Tucker, the scoring was close, the Warriors topping the Tigers by 46 to 42. Although the Warriors started slowly in the second meeting, a second-half spurt put them ahead to stay, 42-36. A team high score of 83 points was established against the Blue Devils of Varina. Coach Cox em- ployed every player in setting a tremendous scoring pace. High scorers for the team included Norman Ed- wards, Jackie Bostain, Larry Talley, Steve Bolton, and Bubba Zyglocke. Rebounding strength was largely due to the talents of Edwards, Talley, and Mark Bryan. 117 RECORD Henrico 25 Patrick Henry 18 Henrico 37 St. Paul 11 Henrico 49 Varina 39 Henrico 83 Varina 35 Henrico 46 Tucker 42 Henrico 46 Lee Davis 34 Henrico 42 Tucker 36 Henrico 62 Patrick Henry 51

WINNING SEASONS After beginning the season with a win over Doug- las Freeman, the 1965 girls basketball team went on to finish with a record of nine wins and one loss. The loss to Hermitage brought the team a tie with the Panthers for first place in the Capital District. Among the most exciting encounters of the season, the game with Highland Springs ranks high. The War- rior co-captains, Lorraine Moriconi and Ann Carneal, led the team to a resounding victory with a score of 61-27. In both contests with arch-rival Tucker, the War- riors crushed the Tiger team with scores of 41-21 and 44-25. The Hermitage games were split. Henrico won the first 43-38, but lost the second by 10 points to their 47. This year the Warrior girl cagers, under the fine leadership and coaching of Miss Darden, broke many records. They scored the most points in any single game, which was 61. Ann Carneal scored 28 points, the most points scored by any individual in a game. They also hold the highest point average per game, which was 45.6. The Warriors hold the longest winning streak of seven games. Peggy Bruce, Jeannie Berkeley and Ann Carneal were Henrico’s leading scorers. After defeating Douglas Freeman, the J.V. girl cagers went on to complete another winning season. Under the fine leadership of Coach Broughman, the girls compiled a 6-2 record. The two defeats came at We Third Row: Arva Barnes, Debbie Bragg, Linda Gregory, Carolyn Major, Madeline Korb, Manager.
