Despite their move into the stiffer competition of the newly formed Group I-A Capital District, Henrico’s varsity cagers managed to post a respectable season's record of ten wins and ten losses. Coached by Phil Coppage, the team kept the league championship in question until the final game of the season by pro- viding upsets at crucial points. For the fourth year, Henrico was led by all-stater Kenny Foster. The team also relied strongly on the shooting and rebounding of senior Bobby Bostain. Cen- ter Allan Greene, Butch Zyglocke, Scotty Minor, Wayne Thorpe, Dennis Johns, and Carl Wood also added strong support for the Warriors. After getting off to a somewhat disappointing start with two wins and three losses, which included a heart-breaking one point loss to Hermitage in the closing seconds, Henrico upset John Marshall 70-65 before a capacity crowd. Henrico, down by five points just after halftime, pulled away on a steal by Foster, and the Justices never caught up. Close games against George Wythe, Hermitage, and Highland Springs provided the impetus necessary to bring Henrico into the high point of the season, a 90-81 overtime defeat of league-leading Lane. Led by Kenny Foster’s 37 points, the Warriors snapped Lane’s eleven-game winning streak. With seven seconds left in the game, Kenny Foster made both ends of a one- and-one to give Henrico the lead. Then, with the game all but won, Harris was fouled in the act of shooting and sank two free throws to send the game into over- time. In the overtime period, Henrico outscored Lane 14-5 to record its eighth win in 15 games. The Warriors ended the regular season with a record of nine wins and nine losses. In the Capital District Tournament, they won over fourth-ranked John Marshall, only to lose to top-ranked Lane in the semi-finals. Kenny Foster ended his sensational four-year bas- ketball career at Henrico, setting many records not soon to be equaled. He became the 21st Virginia scholastic player to score over 1,500 points. His final four-season total was 1,685 points, a new record for the metropolitan Richmond area. He was named to the All-Capital District team, the All-Metropolitan team, the Capital District Tournament team, and was awarded the Capital District Fred McCracken Sports- manship Award presented by area officials. Foster possesses nearly every individual record at Henrico.
