es TOTEM POLE 1966 - VOLUME IV HENRICO HIGH SCHOOL Richmond, Virginia Editor Ted Durvin Business Manager Griselda McWhirt Advisors Mrs. Mabel Boyd Mrs. Anne Graham In years to come, many of the memories so sharply etched in our minds today will be only blurred reflections. To help us remember—to recreate and capture the challenges, the frustrations, the victories, the failures, and the friendships of this year at Hen- rico, the 1966 Totem Pole has endeavored to bring into focus the moments we will want to treasure all our lives. An expanded curriculum gave students even wider opportunities to pursue individual aptitudes and interests. New science courses and classes in journalism and creative writing were among the new class offerings, while the newly formed distributive education department provided occupational training. In efforts to keep pace with an enlarged student body, the number of faculty mem- bers continued to increase. GQ{EE SAO IEE For many of us, school is much more than a 9:00 to 3:30 affair. Through participation in the many clubs and activities at Henrico, students are given an opportunity to share common interests, learn, and serve. Although-accepting the responsibilities of mem- bership often means long hours of work, there is also fun, fellowship, and the reward of self-satisfaction when a job is well done. welcome Arne! Sparkling blue eyes and an understanding smile have made an everlasting impression on Henrico this year. With a slight accent and a profound interest in everything, Arne Jorgen Growen, our first contact with Europe, has become a permanent part of Hen- rico’s history. The 6’ 2’” Norwegian studied 5th year German and advanced math in addition to required courses and an elective in art 4. (Try translating Beowulf into Norwegian for study!) All in all, it has been a great year and unforgettable for us all. Arne, we salute you! ' Ye ‘e 10 For those who participated, as well as for those who cheered them on, it was a great year. The Warrior spirit soared, as Henrico was well repre- sented in the newly formed Capital District. Boosted by the cheerleaders, the rousing spirits of every class were demonstrated at pep rallies in a sign- plastered gym. Seniors in particular gave verbal encouragement. Although not every game was won, to focus on our moments of triumph is to recall many pleasant memories. 1] Henrico’s social events were brightened this year by the school’s first homecoming and the first Winter Carnival. Graduates of 1965, Henrico’s first alumni, were invited to return for homecoming festivities, which included a dance sponsored by the senior class. The Winter Carnival, postponed by snow, was rescheduled for early March. The student body also enjoyed the annual Hi-Y Sweetheart Dance and other functions held throughout the year. Climaxing the activities was the Junior-Senior Prom, a gala affair held in April. Behind the scenes, students and sponsors worked long hours, first decorating and then cleaning up afterward. The elegance and excitement, as well as the fun and the hard work, will not soon be forgotten. 13 DEDICATION wo. «-ee ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY....... 16 CLASSES... ). .. 2 SPORTS... ee eo ORGANIZATIONS) eee ACTIVITIES? oo.) ANNE GRAHAM Dedciated far beyond the limits of most teachers, Mrs. Graham is always ready to sacrifice for her students. It is not a rare sight to see her working on the Totem Pole long after everyone else has left. US: 992 FOCUS on 16 17 PRINCIPAL Nathan G. Tubbs B.S., Idaho State College M.Ed, University of Virginia ADMINISTRATION Mr. Stroud confers with Mr. Tubbs. Mr. Tubbs dictates a letter. George A. Stroud, Jr. B.S., Kansas State College of Pillsburg M.Ed., University of Virginia Mr. Sorrell and Mr. Stroud pause while making their rounds of Henrico’s Campus. NS ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS Two new but able assistant principals, Mr. Stroud and Mr. Sorrell, joined the administrative staff this year. With the help of these two capable men, Mr. Tubbs carries out the administrative duties at Henrico. In spite of heavy workloads, these three men could often be found doing what they seemed to enjoy most—associating with the students. Mr. Tubbs cheer- ing at the football games, Mr. Sorrell giving advice to his Key Club boys, Mr. Stroud chatting with students in the cafeteria—these are familiar sights to Warrior students. Always ready to entertain new ideas, the adminis- tration deserves much credit for creating an atmos- phere conducive to lively academic and extra-curricu- lar pursuits. James G. In their first year in Group 1-A competition, the Warriors achieved an outstanding record of 6-2-2. Led by tri-captains Chipper Clarke, Doug Moyer, Walter Zyglocke, and the two leading runners, Chip Evans and Carl Jones, the varsity team scored an average of 14.5 points per game. The Warriors won the statistical battle but came out on the short end of a 19-14 score against Thomas Jefferson in the season opener. Henrico gained 174 yards rushing to T. J.’s 130, while T. J. led in passing yardage, 63 to 52. The Warriors scored more first downs, 10-7. Fullback Chip Evans was named ‘Back of the Week”’ by local newspapermen for his outstand- ing play in this game. Evans gained 126 yards on 14 carries and scored both Warrior TD’s. Henrico scored in every period, played all 44 mem- bers of the team, and used a tremendous goal-line stand to preserve a 25-0 shut-out over the Varina Blue Devils. Carl Jones led the ball carriers with 67 yards on 10 carries. Chipper Clarke completed three passes for 41 yards, and Russell Cornett intercepted a pass. Doug Moyer’s blocking and defense were also game highlights, along with a great team defense that held Varina to only 29 total yards. In the John Marshall game, the Justices converted Warrior mistakes into scores, defeating Henrico 13-0. 106 WARRIORS EXCEL OF GROUP 1-A Despite good defensive play, a rain soaked crowd of 3,000 saw the warriors lose, even though they won the statistical battle. The Warriors rebounded with a win over the Meadowbrook Monarchs. After a tackle by Moyer, the ball was fumbled into the hands of Chipper Clarke. He raced 95 yards for the first touchdown in the War- riors 20-0 win over Meadowbrook, as the Warriors chalked up another victory. The Warriors powered their way to touchdowns the first two times they had the ball and crushed Highland Springs’ hopes for a homecoming victory under a 20-0 score. Ron Gibson intercepted a Springer pass and ran 25 yards for the last Warrior touchdown, climax- ing a game that saw the Springers gain only 57 yards. One of the highlights of the 1965 season was the Warrior 21-20 victory over Lee-Davis. With Chipper Clarke, Chipper Collins, and Walter Zyglocke leading the way, Henrico handed Lee-Davis its first and only loss in a spectacular game, before a standing-room- only crowd. After the Confederates scored on the open- ing kickoff, Henric o intercepted a pass on the Lee- Davis 26 yard line and ran for a score. A 49 yard pass to Chipper Collins brought the second touchdown for the Warriors and after a series of passes to McGuinn DEFENSIVE LINEUP OFFENSIVE LINEUP IN FIRST YEAR COMPETITION and Jones, Chip Evans went over for the third Henrico score. Walter Zyglocke and the fine defensive team held the Confederates to 70 yards, while the Warriors rushed 219 yards. Chip Evans ran for three touchdowns, and Clarke kicked the extra points, as Henrico won over Prince George by a score of 21-13, for its fourth straight vic- tory. Halfback Carl Jones played another outstand- ing game, adding 103 yards rushing. Henrico’s first homecoming crowd was shown a fine example of the Warriors’ winning play, as Henrico’s spirited team defeated Patrick Henry 10-7. With the score tied until the second half, Clarke kicked a 16 yard field goal for the winning margin. Ina fine defensive game, in which Davey Crockett, Walter Zyglocke, Chipper Collins, and Chipper Clarke were outstanding, Henrico and its greatest rival, Tucker, battled to a 7-7 tie. Warrior school spirit was at aq maximum, as Wayne Dunn intercepted a pass on the 20 and ran it to the 6 yard line, where Chipper Clarke dived over for the touchdown. A hard-hitting and fierce tackling Warrior team, led by Coach John Brown, tied Hermitage by a score of 7-7, before a crowd of 5,000. Henrico’s tremendous moral victory crushed the Panthers’ hopes for the district title. A fumble, recovered by Emory Williams on the Hermitage 13, set the stage for Ron Gibson’s 107 Co-Captains Chipper Clarke, Manager George Miller Doug Moyer, and Walter Zy- glocke touchdown pass to Carl Jones in the second quarter. In the waning minutes of the game, Hermitage man- aged to tie the score, as Henrico closed a successful year. Coach John Brown, who was named one of Vir- ginia’s ten most outstanding coaches, was ably assisted by Coach Colley, line coach; Coach Vitek, backfield coach; and Coach Lowry defensive backfield coach. At the annual football banquet, awards were given to the following for their outstanding play: Most Spirited, Carl Jones; Best Lineman, Doug Moyer; Best Defensive Player, Walter Zyglocke; Best Blocker, Doug Moyer; and Most Valuable Player, Chipper Clarke. Coached by Phil Coppage, the team kept the league championship in question until the final game of the season by pro- viding upsets at crucial points. For the fourth year, Henrico was led by all-stater Kenny Foster. The team also relied strongly on the shooting and rebounding of senior Bobby Bostain. Cen- ter Allan Greene, Butch Zyglocke, Scotty Minor, Wayne Thorpe, Dennis Johns, and Carl Wood also added strong support for the Warriors. After getting off to a somewhat disappointing start with two wins and three losses, which included a heart-breaking one point loss to Hermitage in the closing seconds, Henrico upset John Marshall 70-65 before a capacity crowd. Henrico, down by five points just after halftime, pulled away on a steal by Foster, and the Justices never caught up. Close games against George Wythe, Hermitage, and Highland Springs provided the impetus necessary to bring Henrico into the high point of the season, a 90-81 overtime defeat of league-leading Lane. Led by Kenny Foster’s 37 points, the Warriors snapped Lane’s eleven-game winning streak. With seven seconds left in the game, Kenny Foster made both ends of a one- and-one to give Henrico the lead. Then, with the game all but won, Harris was fouled in the act of shooting and sank two free throws to send the game into over- time. In the overtime period, Henrico outscored Lane 14-5 to record its eighth win in 15 games. The Warriors ended the regular season with a record of nine wins and nine losses. In the Capital District Tournament, they won over fourth-ranked John Marshall, only to lose to top-ranked Lane in the semi-finals. Kenny Foster ended his sensational four-year bas- ketball career at Henrico, setting many records not soon to be equaled. He became the 21st Virginia scholastic player to score over 1,500 points. His final four-season total was 1,685 points, a new record for the metropolitan Richmond area. He was named to the All-Capital District team, the All-Metropolitan team, the Capital District Tournament team, and was awarded the Capital District Fred McCracken Sports- manship Award presented by area officials. Foster possesses nearly every individual record at Henrico. JV. ENJOYS WINNING SEASON 114 An inexperienced but spirited junior varsity team, led by co-captains Jerry Selden and Mike Sweeney, enjoyed another winning season in 1965. The team’s strong defensive efforts were led by Steve Ennis, Donnell Smith, Bradley Anderson and Jimmy Napier. Offensive standouts included Jerry Selden, Craig Taylor, Jerry Haynes, and Danny Collier. Tucker, as always, provided the most exciting game. A tense atmosphere prevaded as the Tigers edged by the Warriors, 7-0. Warrior opposition was allowed only three touch- downs throughout the season; and in Coach Phil Cop- page’s opinion, the team played well. Ten players earned letters for their efforts during the season. Ray Butler, with a 10.7 average and Ron- nie Vest, with a 10.4 average, were the leading scor- ers. George Andrews was the leading rebounder with an 8.8 per game average. High points of the season came against arch-rival Tucker. In the first Tucker game the team reached two seasonal highs by shooting 58.5% and scoring 73 points. In the second Tucker game after trailing 24 to 1 at the end of the first quarter, the team came back to win 67-64 in overtime. By virtue of their second place finish, the J.V. played John Marshall’s J.V. in the Capital District Tournament. EIGHTH GRADERS ARE UNDEFEATED Henrico’s basketball fortunes appeared bright as Coach Dick Cox’s eighth grade cagers crushed all op- position, compiling an 8-0 record. Long hours of practice had to be scheduled around the varsity and junior varsity teams, and most games were played on Saturday mornings. The team scored two victories each against Patrick Henry, Varina, and Tucker, and also defeated Lee- Davis and St. Paul’s. In the first game against arch-rival Tucker, the scoring was close, the Warriors topping the Tigers by 46 to 42. Although the Warriors started slowly in the second meeting, a second-half spurt put them ahead to stay, 42-36. A team high score of 83 points was established against the Blue Devils of Varina. Coach Cox em- ployed every player in setting a tremendous scoring pace. High scorers for the team included Norman Ed- wards, Jackie Bostain, Larry Talley, Steve Bolton, and Bubba Zyglocke. Rebounding strength was largely due to the talents of Edwards, Talley, and Mark Bryan. 117 RECORD Henrico 25 Patrick Henry 18 Henrico 37 St. Paul 11 Henrico 49 Varina 39 Henrico 83 Varina 35 Henrico 46 Tucker 42 Henrico 46 Lee Davis 34 Henrico 42 Tucker 36 Henrico 62 Patrick Henry 51 seosooaee r ‘ ; ' “| i i } i | | | 1 i ‘ ‘ : i ' : i i ' Tae ns st ; s 4 “| 1 | : | ‘ : ‘ { i i i { i | i i |. amen GE con | | : : 4 ’ Varsity Squad: Susan Haurand, Nancy Covington, Lorraine Mori- coni, Ann Carneal, Nancy Dyke, Betsy Golden, Jeannie Berkley. WINNING SEASONS After beginning the season with a win over Doug- las Freeman, the 1965 girls basketball team went on to finish with a record of nine wins and one loss. The loss to Hermitage brought the team a tie with the Panthers for first place in the Capital District. Among the most exciting encounters of the season, the game with Highland Springs ranks high. The War- rior co-captains, Lorraine Moriconi and Ann Carneal, led the team to a resounding victory with a score of 61-27. In both contests with arch-rival Tucker, the War- riors crushed the Tiger team with scores of 41-21 and 44-25. The Hermitage games were split. Henrico won the first 43-38, but lost the second by 10 points to their 47. This year the Warrior girl cagers, under the fine leadership and coaching of Miss Darden, broke many records. They scored the most points in any single game, which was 61. Ann Carneal scored 28 points, the most points scored by any individual in a game. They also hold the highest point average per game, which was 45.6. The Warriors hold the longest winning streak of seven games. Peggy Bruce, Jeannie Berkeley and Ann Carneal were Henrico’s leading scorers. After defeating Douglas Freeman, the J.V. girl cagers went on to complete another winning season. Early in the year, the SCA reviewed the charters of all service clubs, and as the sec- ond semester began, they sponsored the Win- ter Carnival. As one of the highlights of the social year, this dance, in a frigid Arctic set- ting, complete with a rustic ski lodge, pro- mises to be a tradition at Henrico for years to come. In the spring, the SCA sponsored its annual stunt night in which all of the clubs partici- pated. Also, the completion of the SCA’s scrapbook was completed. With it, they hope to preserve the year’s highlights and memor- ies of the school. With the co-operation of the art class es and the shop, a carved totem pole is to be erected in the lobby of the gym. SMOKE SIGNALS INCREASES COVERAGE Me Providing Henrico with the first six-page edi- tions, the ‘Smoke Signals” staff worked diligently to- ward a better newspaper. Led by sponsor, Mrs. Britt, and Editor-in-Chief, Donna Lampie, the staff’s hard work was evident in a much improved newspaper. The November edition of the ‘‘Smoke Signals’’ announced the names of the five candidates for the 1965 Homecoming Court, which, until then, had been a secret. A later edition announced the names of those students who were nominated for the Senior Superlatives. Color inserts were distributed with each copy of the February issue. These color inserts, not locally published, were another new addition to the paper. Members of the staff attended the University of Richmond Clinic and the Capital District Leadership Conference. The three delegates from ‘Smoke Sig- nals’’ to SIPA were Marilyn Durvin, Alice Hott, and Nancy Burley. Students and faculty were invited to submit let- ters to the editor expressing individual ideas and opinions on any subject. DISH WASHING INITIATES KEY CLUB MEMBERS Key Club members Rick Simpson, Wayne Thorpe, and Jimmy Sties clean up after an- nual spaghetti supper. 136 Carrying homemade keys and washing dishes after the spaghetti supper initiated fifteen new members into the Key Club this year. The giant keys, made by the prospective members, advertised the spa- ghetti supper which was held before the Tucker football game. A toy drive, a safety project, contributing to the Christ- mas Mother, AFS, and cafeteria, and help- ing a needy family kept the members busy. Teachers were surprised at an afternoon faculty meeting, when members served homemade refreshments as part of their teacher appreciation campaign. As an added courtesy, the faculty received their Christmas dinner free from the Key Club. In March, representatives were sent to the Key Club Capitol District Convention in Norfolk, Virginia. Christmas baskets, decorated like sleighs and Santa Clauses, were collected by the Hi-Y and given to the Christmas Mother this year. A community Christmas tree at Chamberlayne Shopping Center was decorated by members as another project. In February, the annual Sweetheart Dance was held. Crowning of the new sweetheart highlighted this semi-formal dance. The club made a substantial contribution to the Grayson Murphey Memorial Scholarship Fund. Have you got your “’SS?’’ was the question asked by mysterious Indians during the Pep Club Sportsman- ship Drive. The other members were disguised as “OOSS” agents to arouse student interest and to pro- mote sportsmanship. Those students who knew ‘’SS”’ was school spirit were given cards stating the Warriors sportsmanship code. Printed on a large sign in the gym was the sportsmanship code which reminded students to exhibit sportsmanship at all athletic events. Sponsored by Miss Trevvett and led by President Delphine Wood, members sold football programs at all the home games. A special edition with pictures of the football players and the homecoming court was published for the homecoming game. Pep Club members promoted honesty during exams in a citizenship drive. They placed in each homeroom signs to be a constant reminder to students of their honor obligations. Members worked earnestly in making posters for not only sports activities but the projects of other clubs also. As a fund-raising project, the Pep Club held a car wash in the spring. FUTURE NURSES TOUR HOSPITALS Being a nurse requires time and energy, and so does being in the Future Nurses Club. Excursions and talks topped the list of activities for the future nur- ses, Early in the year the group visited the Crippled Children’s Hospital, where they entertained and vis- ited with the patients. Senior members were given an opportunity to look into the future when they visited Richmond Memorial Hospital’s open house. The group also toured the University of Virginia campus and hospital. As a service project, clothes and toys were collect- ed for the Hillside Center. Guest speaker Miss Toni Bliley talked to the group about the career of an x-ray technician. Stu- dent nurses from Grace Hospital, Medical College of Virginia, St. Luke’s, and Stuart Circle also gave lec- tures. BAND 147 8:00 practices and long hours of extra labor paid dividends as the band received recognition and lavish praise for their outstanding performances during the year. The band’s collaboration with Tucker at the foot- ball game between the two rivals resulted in one of the season’s greatest halftime shows. Other highlights of the band’s fall activities in- cluded the performances at the University of Rich- mond homecoming festivities and the VEA convention. The Henrico musicians were selected to entertain at the Toy Parade and the Tobacco Festival Parade also. Students had an opportunity to see and hear the band at pep rallies, school concerts, and other events. Throughout the year, the band set an example in school spirit and enthusiasm. The sign-making talents of the band were displayed at games and pep rallies, and their artistic abilities earned special commenda- tion in the Christmas basket and room-decoration contests. Along with the chorus, the concert band taped a program for educational television. This special Christ- mas program was aired on December 24. Madame de la Fleur (Betty Stansell) renews her acquaintance with Americans Kid Connor (Ronnie Tribble) and Con Kidder (David Ankeney). “THE RED MILL” Tulips, wooden shoes and a Red Mill set the stage for a gala presentation of Victor Herbert’s musical. The story involves two Americans, Kid Conner, portrayed by Ronnie Tribble, and Con Kidder, por- trayed by David Ankeney, who are stranded in a Dutch town. They are entangled in a scheme to rescue Gretchen from marrying the Governor against her wishes. Her father, learning of the scheme from the keeper of the Red Mill Inn, locks Gretchen in the old Red Mill to prevent her escape until the Governor comes to claim her hand. On returning, the Governor then falls in love with Juliana, Gretchen's aunt. This leaves Gretchen free to marry Hendrick, portrayed by Charles Danner. Her father opposes her marriage to Hendrick until he learns that Hendrick has inherited one million pounds. The work of the concert choir, accompanied by the band, brought out large audiences for two out- standing performances. Gretchen (Betty Jo Clary) and her captain (Charles Danner), the operetta’s romantic leads, serenade each other. The entire company presents the finale. 151 GWYNNE WEST REIGNS OVER FIRST HOMECOMING “Hi ‘65,’ a formation by the band, welcomed the class of 1965 to Henrico’s first homecoming game. Other activities at half-time included the presentation of the homecoming court, made up of five senior girls chosen by the student body: Hedi Lack, Diane Schools, Carol Sorrell, Gwynne West, and Delphine Wood. Gwynne West was crowned Queen, and Diane Schools was named Maid of Honor. Henrico alumni received invitations to the homecoming game and dance with their yearbook supplements early in the fall. The queen and her court reigned over an evening of dancing with an ‘indian Summer’ theme. With music provided by the Escorts, the couples led a formation in honor of the queen. The festivities were under the direction of the Senior Class. Gwynne West, 1965 Homecoming Queen, greets her subjects. Mr. Tubbs crowns Henrico’s first Homecoming Queen. Cheerleaders yell, ‘‘Stand up and holler for HHS.” The football team runs through a victory sign. 156 low “We've got the whole school on our side’’ echoed through the gym at pep rallies this year as Henrico demonstrated the best spirit the school has ever had. Led by the Class of ‘66, class rivalry reached a frenzied peak. Homerooms were plastered with signs and posters as Warriors of every class rampaged to win a school spirit contest judged by the cheerleaders. The seventh grade won; but according to Coach John Brown, there was a terrific improvement in school spirit, which he attributed to the Senior Class. One of the highlights of this year’s pep rallies was the crowning of the ‘‘Homecoming Queen.” ‘Zelda’ Zyglocke, ‘‘Hilda’’ Harvell, ‘“Clementine’’ Clarke, and ‘Pearl’ Perry were among the princesses competing for the title. Through claps and yells the students elected the ‘’girl’’ of their choice. Miss ‘Zelda’ Zy- glocke was chosen as Henrico’s first ‘Homecoming Queen” by an overwhelming margin. At the last scheduled pep rally of the year, Hen- rico’s outstanding band honored the seniors with their Alma Mater. During the Capital District Basketball tournament, a surprise pep rally was held to provide another boost to the Warrior spirit. Linda Matthews, Carol Good, and Linda Skinner re- presented Henrico at Girls State. Delegates to Boys State included Richard Hargis, Keith Witt, Walter Zyglocke, Paul Anderson, and John Burton. Within these pages the 1966 Totem Pole staff has attempted to bring into focus the indelible mem- ories of this year. Who can forget the endless homework, the term papers, waiting in lunch lines, being able to chew gum, the two-week snow holiday, Coach Brown’s Warriors, the basketball team’s win over Lane, our first Homecoming, our first Winter Carnival, the sen- ior spirit... For the seniors, receiving their diplomas symbo- lized four years of work, fun, and friendships. The Class of ‘66 responded to the challenge of being top class with spirit and energy. Grades, class rank, col- lege boards, job opportunities, college acceptances— these became conversation topics in senior home- rooms around the campus. With this volume, the Totem Pole has attempted to provide everyone at Henrico a means to focus on the events that made 1966 a great year. 2. THE LIBRARY OF VIRGINIA unui awa
