HAYES, U. S. NAVY Capfain Richard M. Hayes, USN, Commanding Officer, USS HENRICO lAPA 45l was born in Piffsburgh, Pennsylvania in l9l4. Prior 'ro enfering fhe U. S. Naval Academy, Capfain Hayes affended Carnegie lnsfifufe of Technology for one and a half years. Following his graduafion from fhe Academy in I938, Capfain Hayes was assigned fo fhe VINCENNES lCA He served as Assisfanf Navigafor and Signal Officer unfil June I939 when he reporfed fo fhe LAMSON lDD 367l. During his four of dufy aboard fhe LAMSON he served in a variefy of billefs including Commissary Officer, Communicafions Officer, Gunnery Officer and Execufive Officer. From Augusl' I943 fo June I944 Capfain Hayes served on fhe sfaff of Command- ing Officer Training Command Pacific Fleef as Gunnery Officer. He fhen reporfed aboard fhe ROOKS lDD 804l as Execufive Officer. One year lafer he received his firsl' command, HOPEWELL lDD 68ll. He held -I'his command unfil July I946 when he was assigned fo fhe Sfaff of fhe Reserve Fleef af Long Beach, California. ln July I947 he reporfed for dufy wifh fhe Fleef Training Group in Long Beach. Affer complefing fhe senior course af fhe Marine Corps School, Ouanfico, Virginia, he was assigned dufy as an insfrucfor af 'rhe Command General Sfaff College af Forf Leavenworfh, Kansas in June I949. ln July I95l he refurned fo sea dufy when he reporfed aboard fhe ZELLERS lDD 777l as Commanding Officer. He held 'rhis command unfil Augusf l953 when he reporfed for advanced insfrucfion af fhe Naval War College, Newporf, Rhode Island. A A Upon complefion of fhe course in June I954 Capfain Hayes became head of fhe Office of Naval lnl'elligence's Far Easf Unif. Affer serving in fhis posifion one year, he was appoinfed fo Head of fhe Foreign Branch. He served in fhis capacify unfil he assumed command of Amphibious Confrol Squadron TWO in November l956, relieving Commander Richard E. BABB. Capfain Hayes was promofed fo fhe ranlc of Capfain on I July l957. He was fransferred fo Defroif, Michigan in December I957 where he assumed command of fhe U. S. Navy and Marine Corps Reserve Training Cenfer. 'A Capfain Hayes relieved Capfain J. L. Rhodemyre, USN as Commanding Officer, USS HENRICO lAPA 45l, on 27 January l96l. He holds fhe Bronze Sfar wifh Combaf V and fhe following campaign and service medals: Pre-Pearl Harbor, I sfar: American Area: Asiafic-Pacific, 4 sfarsg World War ll Vicfory: Occupafion Medal and fhe Nafional Defense Medal. BULLEN, JR., USN Capfain Bullen assumed command on I December I960, and was relieved by Capfain Earl R. Crawford on 25 January l962. ' He was born in Monfgomery, Ala. on June 8, I9II and affended high school in Shreveporf, La. He enfered fhe U. S. Naval Academy in June I930, and was grad- uafed in fhe class of I934. He served on USS COLORADO, USS BORIE, USS AUGUSTA, USS VEGA and USS MISSISSIPPI from June I934 unfil Ocfober I942. He served in fhe Bureau of Naval Personnel unfil March I944, when he received his firsf command, 'rhe desfroyer, USS BURNS. Under his command, BURNS foolc parf in fhe Marianas, Wesfern Carolines, Leyfe, Luzon and Borneo operafions. He received fhe Silver Sfar Medal, and fhe Bronze Sfar Medal wifh Combaf V during 'rhese operafions. Following fhe war, he served on fhe sfaff of CINC PACFLT, and fhen commanded USS BOLE. He refurned fo 'rhe Bureau of Naval Personnel in I949. He commanded Desfroyer Division I62 from July I'-752 fo Augusf I953. Capfain Bullen was graduafed from 'rhe Nafional War College in June I954, fhen reporfed for dufy as assisfanf head of fhe Currenf Plans Branch for fhe Chief of Naval Operafions. He commanded USS SEMINOLE, fhen served as assisfanf chief of sfaff for operafions, COMPHIBLANT, fhen wifh fhe Joinf Chief of Sfaff in fhe Penfagon, before becoming Commander Amphibious Squadron One. 6 i'5?
