Our second and mosf frequenfed U. S. Naval porf in Ja- pan was Yokosuka. Many of us were anxious fo gef back fo Japan affer leaving Sasebo, some even fhoughf Japan was beffer fhan Okinawa! Well, we sighfed fhe place one cold day righf affer Chrisfmas and were glad fo gef back where fhe acfivify was, affer spending fhe Holi- day af a Marine Air Base called lwakuni, Japan. Many were anxious fo see Japan and fhis was fhe besf op- porfunify we would have. lnland from Yokosuka, and visi- ble on a clear day was Fuji-san, Japan's beloved exfincf volcano. This mosf perfecfly shaped mounfain, recog- nized fhe world over as a symbol of Japan, rears ifs ma- iesfic snow-capped peak l2,000 feef above fhe sea. For fhose of us who weren'f especially nafure boys, Yokosuka, Kamakura and Tokyo beckoned. Amongsf fhe bars, fhere were occasional shops fo fempf fhe bargain-hunfer, and fesf our bargaining skill. Goods only heard of back home were on display here. Kamakura is fhe firsf sfop for fhe fourisf going along fhe norfhern coasf. Here in fhis re- sorf 'rown is fhe home of fhe gianf Dai-bufsu, or Greaf Buddha. The guy fhaf said if ain'+ a big +hing , iusf YOKOSU KAM TOKYO hasn l' seen if yef. This magnificenf 42 foof giant was casf over 700 years ago, and remains a fop fourisf af- fracfion foday. For fhose sfill able fo see, Yokohama, Japan's mosf imporfanf commercial porf, wasgnexf. This was probably fhe besf shopping area we would see. For fhe complefe absfainers, Tokyo was coming up. Here, fhe home of nine million Japanese, fhe Tokyo Tower, color felevision, fhe Imperial Palace, Geisha girls and Torii, was fhe place of all places. Anyone seeing fhis would have fo say if lS a big fhing! For one dollar you could refurn safely fo 'rhe ship in abouf an hour and one- half, IF you didn r buy fhe wrong fickef, OR gef on fhe wrong frain, OR forgef fo fransfer, OR .... We would refurn fo Yokosuka fwice more before leaving fhis land of geishas, Buddhas and Torii. If would be 'l'he lasf glimpse of a foreign land before seeing fhe good ol' USA! So wifh fears in our eyes, Geisha girls lining fhe shore, Fuii-san and Torii in fhe disfance, we deparfed 'l'his land of near fanfasy, whispering 'Sayonara' ,and promis- ing fo refurn nexf year.
