Text from Pages 1 - 36 of the 1974 volume:

THE BEGINNING School of Nursing Hennepin County General Hospital Minneapolis, Minnesota Class of 1974 If the hands of time were hands that I could hold, I'd keep them warm and in my hands they'd not turn cold. Hand in hand we'd choose the moments that should last, the lovely moments that should have no future and no past. The summer from the top of a swing. The comfort in the sound of a lullaby. The innocence of leaves in the spring. But, most of all the moment when love first touched me! All the happy days would never learn to fly, until the hands of time would choose to wave good-bye. Brian's Song by Alan and Marilyn Bergman MRS. HOWE, Director, School of Nursing They can't make me go on tomorrow! 4 So many Gods, so many creeds. So many paths that wind and wind; When just the art of being kind is all the sad world needs — one of the biggest thrills in life comes from doing a job well----- Real friends are those, who, when you've made a fool of yourself, don't feel you've done a permanent job. MRS. MAKEPEACE, Basic Principles MRS. DeWITTE, Basic Principles, Med. -Surg. To clear difficulties out of the way, there is no axe like a good principle. I remember my youth and the feeling that will never come back any more — the feeling that I could last forever, outlast the sea, the earth, and all men — JOSEPH CONRAD Memories------comfortable transportation, the Bob G Ev show, Kim McCoy and Marvin Turnipseed, rest- What do you mean the bus driver is afraid of them? For midquarter-only half of every book? Give me two hours. They told him it couldn't be done, with a smile he went right to it — He tackled the job that couldn't be done And couldn't do it — ANONYMOUS 6 If at first you don't succeed, ful lectures and passing anatomy... Our friend in need-always a smiling face. Chicken drummies-only the fourth time this week! Familiar sight? God gave man an upright countenance to survey the heavens, and to look upward to the stars. you're running about average. OVID 7 8 Behold how good and how pleasant it is for breathren to dwell together in unity! PSALMS What counts is not the number of hours you put in, but how much you put in the hours. Don't tell me that worry doesn't do any good-I know bet-ter-the things I worry about don't happen. It takes both rain and sunshine to make a rainbow — :hoir 1971 There is nothing so bad it couldn't be worse. A friend is a person with whom you dare to be yourself. Is it something to eat? Everything has been thought of before-the difficulty is to think of it again. Remember spending more time up here than in class? Do I have to wear a lab coat? OUR AFTER HOURS For all its terrors and tragedies — the life of man is a thing of potential beauty and dignity ANONYMOUS Be cheerful. Of all the things you wear, your expression is the most important. ANONYMOUS We'll make you an offer you can't refuse. Some men see things as they are and say why? I dream of things that never were — and say why not? 10 All I did was wadi my rugs!! Please, remember the dress code, girls! ROBERT F. KENNEDY All people smile in the same language. Freshman Class 11 CAPPING, Spring 1971 Instructors, Basic Principles MRS. DOUCAN, MRS. DeWITTE, MRS. TAYLOR No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friends or of thine own were; any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. 12 JOHN DONNE crwrtfcie, OBSTETRICS It's a hard life, isn't it, bibs? MRS. DOUGAN, Instructor, O. B. , Peds., Med.-Surg., Basic Principles Love cannot be wasted. It makes no difference where it is bestowed, it always brings in big returns. ANONYMOUS Quick! The pampers! Checking for fetal heart tones? One of the mysteries of life is how the boy who wasn't good enough to marry the daughter can be the father of the smartest grandchild in the world. 14 ANONYMOUS I work better in You seem disturbed. May I help you, my child? Professionally speaking, I find my bottles come cleaner with... With a child there is a person growing up. You teach him and he learns for the future. With an elderly patient you don't put as much for the future in what is being done. With him it is kindness and understanding that is needed, and respect for him as a person in the present or for the person that he once was. ANONYMOUS Is this where the bottle goes? Here we have a baby. It is composed of a bald head and a pair of lungs. EUGENE FIELD PEDIATRICS What do you mean I'm at the wrong end? You did that procedure just fine. However, this time try getting the right child. He is so small, he does not know the summer sun, the winter snow; the spring that ebbs and comes again. All this is far beyond his ken. A little world he feels and sees; His mother's arms, his mother's knees; He hides his face against her breast And does not care to learn the rest. CHRISTOPHER MORLEY You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself you truly give. And, as in uffish thought he stood, The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame, Came whiffling through the tulgey wood, And burbled as it came! One, two! One, two! A frabjous day! Callooh! Callay! He chortled in his joy. 'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe; All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe.
