BETWEEN THE INNOCENCY OF AN ENTRANCE EXAM AND THE DIGNITY OF A R.N. THERE COMES A DELIGHTFUL CREATURE CALLED THE STUDENT NURSE. . . S.N. They come in assorted sizes, weights, and shapes, but they all have the same creed—to enjoy every second of every hour of every day, off duty or on, and to protest with griping (their only weapon) when their hours of work are over and their instructors are on their coffee breaks. 34 Instructors on their coffee breaks. Student nurses are found everywhere, underneath or jumping through, swimming from or running over. Patients love them, R.N. 's boss them, orderlies ignore them, doctors tolerate them, and nothing protects them. A student nurse is truth with blood on her uniform, beauty with gloves on her hands, wisdom with penicillin in her hair, and a future with scissors in her pocket. Doctor, that s the third time that patient fell off the cart. 35 Truth, beauty, wisdom, and most certainly a future. To a doctor a student nurse is-an inconsiderate, questioning and intruding jangle of noise. When you want her to make an impression she becomes a sadistic giggling creature who's bent on wasting as much time as possible, and sleeping through classes. A student nurse has the appetite of a horse, the energy of a soap suds enema, the lungs of a switchboard operator, the sharpness of a scalpel, the audacity of a nurse's aide, and when she gives a pill she has 5 thumbs on each hand. 40 winks during the lecture. If we keep this up, we’ll look like horses! Inconsiderate, jangle of noise. When you want her to make an impression: (Oh well, it has been three years!) 36 5 thumbs on each hand. She likes good food, vacations, money from home, love stories, doctors, music, water in its natural state, telephone calls, and days off. She's not much for books, surgical attire, hair nets, study hours, the metric system, doctor's lectures, care plans, and campuses. Good Food! Money from home 5 minute limit! Vacations A student nurse likes music. Ripping up care plans. 37 Nobody is so early to rise and so late to bed. Nobody else can cran into one day: 5 enemas, 12 complete bed baths, 3 trips to the nursing office, 4 trips to the pharmacy, rounds with the doctors, 3 dozen A PC’s, put together a uniform, polish her shoes, stay out until 12:00 and still get along with her roommate. A student nurse is a magical creature—you can campus her but you can’t make her stay out of trouble, so you might as well give up. She's your maid, your porter, and your friend. She's a fun loving bundle of noise, but when she gets off duty with aching feet and a tired back, she’ll drop into bed and tell her roommate good night with with these famous words, Wake me at six! (Anonymous) Wake me at six! Auto jrap is THE NURSE The world grows better year by year, Because some nurse in her little sphere, Puts on her apron and grins and sings, And keeps on doing the same old things. Longing for home and all the while, Wearing the same old professional smile, Blessing the new born babe's first breath. Closing the eyes that are still in death. When we lay down our caps and cross the bar, Oh Lord, will you give us just one little star To wear in our crowns with our uniforms new, In that city above, where the Head Nurse is you.
