Mrs. Gooding and Mr. Hunter. NOT PRESENT: Mrs. Horsley. County Superintendent of Schools Principal’s Message Today is the day that we are to get the 1961 LA VISTA. Like a lot of other things in our everyday life, we take it for granted that it will be ready and arrive on the specified day. Before this could be possible, a few people had to make some good plans and do some hard work in order to bring you this book. Let us not glance through the book so hurriedly that we fail to realize the work and effort that have been expended to our benefit. If you look around a school or a community, you will see many instances where people give of themselves for the common good. Of course these people get some personal satisfaction out of doing these jobs and giving this service. These are some of the people that make an organization or a group function. If each of the students in our school could be a contributing member of a group, both the student and the group would prosper. LOUISE MITCHELL Pacific Univ. B. A. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS--President, Bob Chapman; Vice-1 resident, Joe DeGrande; Secretary, Charlene Hartzell; Treasurer, Marlee Breithaupt; Representative, Dave Ragland. This lias been a typically active year for the seniors, the Class of 1961. Senior royalty has included Dana Reed, Potato Festival Princess, and Becky Aubel, Homecoming Princess. Much time has been spent in looking ahead, looking over scholarship opportunities, college bulletins, job opportunities, engagement rings, or just looking ahead with a mounting sense of panic. The senior traditions, sending out announcements, Senior Row, Hick Day, Dress-Up Day, Skip Day, Junior-Senior Banquet, Junior- Senior Prom, and last, but most certainly not least, Baccalaureate and graduation day, together composed the senior year of the class of ‘61. One of the biggest moments of the year was when we received our class rings, which were hopefully engraved 1962. Sea Fantasy was one of the most beautiful proms. We all worked very hard to make it one of the proms to be most remembered, and we think it was. Many of the boys from our class were active in baseball, foot- ball, basketball, track, and wrestling. Class advisers were Mr. Bullock and Mr. Lindberg. V Varsity Football The Hornet varsity football squad finished their most successful season in eleven years. This year's team, under the direction of head coach Leonard Weber and assistant Nels Olson, was geared to a high-powered offense which averaged 400 yards plus total offense per game and sparked the Hornets to an enviable 7 won 2 lost record. The power of the Hornet grid machine was felt throughout the Rogue League as the Hornets placed nine seniors on the all-conference team. The all-conference players were Chuck Blofsky, Larry Lugo, Gary Bebber, Bert Allbritton, Joe DeGrande, Dave Ragland, Dennis O’Keefe, Bob Chapman, and Cal Case- bier, with the latter two receiving all-state acclaim. Other seniors who will be lost by graduation are Ray Brown, Tom Wolf, Larry Sprout, Dave Anderson, and Jack Ziegelmeyer. Although these seniors will be missed, many underclassmen received valuable game experience, and the grid fortunes of the Hornet squad look bright for next year. The varsity basketball team, under the direction of head coach Jerry Johnson, climaxed the most successful season in the school's history with the District 6 championship and a berth in the state A-2 tournament at Coos Bay, where they tied for fifth place. This year's team, which fielded a tall but fast squad, compiled a record of 20 wins against 5 losses. Two of the wins were taken from the vaunted Lakeview squad, which had been expected to win the Rogue League crown. The Hornets, although losing two games and winning only one at the state tournament, placed two men, Ray Brown and Kent Gooding on the all-star first team. Prospects are bright for next year, as five varsity team members and a number of promising J. V.'s are returning. Henley • • . 57 Merrill . . Henley • • . 32 Malin . . Henley • • . 51 Chiloquin . The Hornet wrestlers finished their wrestling season in a blaze of glory. After suffering four straight set-backs at the hands of A-l schools. Crater, Redmond, Ashland, and K.U.H.S., the grapplers turned the experience of those defeats into a lop-sided 204 to 47 victory in the district tournament. Henley placed the fantastic amount of 23 wrestlers in the state tournament. The A-l experience and the state tourney should help the squad next year. Outstanding wrestlers for this season were as follows: Dave Trapp, Dennis O'Keefe, Fred Rodriquez and Chuck Milanovich. The outlook is bright for next year as the Hornets have 18 of the 23 boys that wrestled in the state meet returning. Varsity Baseball FIRST ROW, Left to Right: B. Stoehsler, B. Brower, S. Cox, C. Henley compiled a 7 won 3 lost record; however, one of the losses was to the Southern Oregon College J. V. team, whom the Hornets played in mid-season. TTie top five batters on the team were as follows: Larry Lugo .571, Bert Allbritton .555, Joe De- Grande .500, John Roberts .500, and Charles Phillips .500. The Hornets, for the first time in Henley baseball, entered a district play-off game with Glendale, but lost 5-1. Things are looking up, however, as the team lost only three lettermen. They are Ray Jackson, Dick Reiling, and John Roberts.
