e. . --V . . . 1 To some who were in the winning of the West in the 1800's, it was merely a movement, a moving of people to new lands, to others it was a money making venture, and to others still it meant new homes and reli- gious freedom. But to those few Americans in the land who were gifted with the ingenious foresight of the ancient apostles, it was a mighty na- tion moving westward with all its steely sinews set against the forest , a veritable army battling against the vicissitudes of nature, pressing on- ward, ever onward to the West, to Oregon. A new kingdom was being won, a kingdom of rich land, bounteous game, rich virgin forests, and anppportunity to make this our Oregon one of the richest states in the union. But these first pioneers, where are they now? These first brave men who fought and died? Their epitahs are written in the furrows, their heirs know not their tombs. The plowshares cleave through the mellow loam where these first brave men now rest in peace. With reverence for the spirit of those who broke the trails, of those who builded by the wayside better than they knew, of all those, who, by their far-sighted vision have filled a place in the forward movement of the West, we create this book as a living monument. Joaquin Miller in Westward Ho! expresses it thusz, .... Deep and wide The wheels of progress have passed ong The silent pioneer is gone. His ghost is moving down the trees, And now we push the memories Of bluff bold men who dared and died In foremost battle, quite aside.
