But to those few Americans in the land who were gifted with the ingenious foresight of the ancient apostles, it was a mighty na- tion moving westward with all its steely sinews set against the forest , a veritable army battling against the vicissitudes of nature, pressing on- ward, ever onward to the West, to Oregon. A new kingdom was being won, a kingdom of rich land, bounteous game, rich virgin forests, and anppportunity to make this our Oregon one of the richest states in the union. But these first pioneers, where are they now? These first brave men who fought and died? Their epitahs are written in the furrows, their heirs know not their tombs. The plowshares cleave through the mellow loam where these first brave men now rest in peace. With reverence for the spirit of those who broke the trails, of those who builded by the wayside better than they knew, of all those, who, by their far-sighted vision have filled a place in the forward movement of the West, we create this book as a living monument. Joaquin Miller in Westward Ho! expresses it thusz, .... Deep and wide The wheels of progress have passed ong The silent pioneer is gone. His ghost is moving down the trees, And now we push the memories Of bluff bold men who dared and died In foremost battle, quite aside. Never before has the responsibility for the strength and success of our government rested so heavily upon us as individuals. We have been educated at public expense. We must accept the duties which follow this education by preserving and improving the heritage which has come to us. We hope that the years of schooling which you have received will help you to be strong morally, mentally, and physically in order that you may face the problems which are to come with wisdom and without fear. Mclioen Malin I Football The Klamath County B teams had one of their most successful seasons this year. The three south-end schools, Henley, Merrill and Malin ended in first, second and third places respectively. All the county teams were exceptionally evenly matched and provided good enter- tainment for the fans. The Hornets started their undefeated, untied record by rolling over the Lakeview A school eleven, 32 to 0 at the first of the season. With this start the Hornets never ceased pounding until they captured the B by defeating Malin. Henley piled up such an impressive record that claim was laid to State B title. The south-end schools rated seven men on the County All-Star team, of those Hen- ley had five. Those selected for the County All-Star team are as follows: Henley: Norris, Hess, McKay, Bradley, Switzler. Malin and Merrill rated one position apiece in Kirkpatrick and Walker. Bonanza and Chiloquin claimed two men apiece in Jones, Bray, Horton and Potter. The score charts for the year as follows: oquin 6 Henley Lakeview Merrill .. 13 Bonanza .... 0 Malin .... 12 Chil Henley Chiloquin Merrill .. 13 Chiloquin .. 0 Malin ....,. 0 Henley .... ,. With all schools out to take the championship away from Chiloquin, the Perennial title holder, the south-end teams made a very creditable showing. Merrill nosed out Malin in the final game of the season with a thrilling 34-33 victory that clinched top spot in the League for them. Henley copped third place with final victory over Gilchrist 48- 28. Malin ended in sixth palce by reason of their loss to Merrill. The Malin Mustangs , sparked by the hard-driving and always alert Kirkpatrick, played some excellent ball this year with some hard luck thrown in that resulted in the loss of three League games by only one point, the winning of which would have placed Malin Well up in the League. Five seniors, Kirkpatrick, Haley, Rupert, Ratliff, and Chotard will be a serious blow to the Mustang team for another year. The Henley Hornets had a very successful season, losing only to Merrill and Chiloquin, first and second place teams, and a one-point loss to Bly. This was a decid- ed improvement over the 1940 season when the Hornets wound up in last position. Senior graduations will take Norris, Breithaupt, Berry, and Mueller from the squad for 1942. The Merrill Huskies grabbed first spot in the League this year, defeating the highly rated Panthers of Chiloquin in two games, both thrillers. Their only loss was handed them by the under-rated Bly Bobcats in an over-time period. This is Mer- rill's first victory in a number of years. In the play-offs for theiDistrict Champion- ship the Huskies trimmed the Paisley quintet for the Klamath-Lake title, but lost two games to Jacksonville for the District Cup. Merrill and Henley went to the Ashland Invitational Tournament. The Hornets met stiff competition and were eliminated, but Merrill went on to win the Consolation title after a 1st round loss to Butte Falls. South-end schools Malin and Merrill placed three men on the County All-Star sel- ection: Chatburn and Snapp of Merrill, and Kirkpatrick of Malin. HB LEAGUE STANDINGS Team Won Lost Pct.
